Update: to streamline the selling process I've listed my Wire Straightener on Etsy, so you can buy it directly there:

This is an improved design over V2 wire straightener (which can be found here: • Wire straightener V2 )
Features: there are two inline straightening modules, phased by 90 degrees, floating (allowing for self-alignment), and easily removable for servicing or upgrading. Both modules can be tightened as needed with a No4 Allen key via dedicated through holes. Oh, and this version uses U groove ball bearings, for better hugging the (up to 3mm) wire. The results are butter smooth!

I love it. As wire is worked it becomes stiffer or harder. Have you noticed at all?

Metals work harden differently. Copper more so than steel. I haven't used this on copper wire yet, only on steel, and haven't noticed any work hardening.

very nice project. where did you get the bearings from? i can not find them, neither in germany nor in china. the LFR50/5NPP do not show up anywhere and i can not find an exchange for it. thank you

There are rebar straightening machines. Used mostly in lower cost of living countries where the effort to extract the rebar from the concrete has more value than the labor to do it. I still question the safety of such rebar, but that is a different issue...

Does the tool straighten large arcs ? I’ve built a similar staightener but my design not that good for removing large arcs in the wire.

Nope, this is meant for local smoothing of the wire. It even induces its own very large radius arc on the smoothed out wire

Thank you! Yes, it can do it. But for 1mm wire one could use smaller bearings which would allow them to be packed closer together thus achieving the same result in a more compact package.

@@kirubakarang6112 The idea with smaller bearings is to reduce the bending span between two same side bearings. So yes, this would mean building a smaller version of the widget.

That sounds like very thin wire. Are you sure you need it straightened this way? What would be the diameter of the wire?

Would there be modifications to the design for different wire sizes? I does not seem logical that an 8-guage wire and a 24-gauge wire could both be straightened by the same device. Perhaps each device is adjustable and can accommodate a range of wire sizes? Nice job, BTW.

Thank you! Yes, each side is made up of a pair of "jaws" that can be tightened or loosesened against each other via the 6 screws. I put access holes for the Allen key specifically to allow for adjusting without dismantling

That's well within its range, with zero modifications from me (I made it to fit wire up to 2.1mm)

I'm trying to design one of these for decoiling electrical wire. We manually(use our hands) to straighten hundred of feet of 10,12,14,18 gauge electrical wire. Have you or could you test this? This is the closest thing I could find that might work. I'm more then willing to buy your files or product to save my guys fingers. Please let me know!

Hey Ryan! I’m an electrician trying to scrap my own wire from houses, looking for a solution on straightening. have you had a chance with this device on the gauges mentioned? I’m researching so i can mcgyver a straightening pulley system into a stripmiester for automatic stripping of sheathing into straight copper. Would love to hear how it’s going!!!

@Matthew Burns Yes, bull wire is a mild steel if I'm not mistaken, so it should smooth out nicely. I should redesign the tool to beef it up a bit as 4mm, although it might not seem, is much stiffer than 3mm or 2mm. 2mm diameter = 2.14 sqmm cross section area; 3mm = 7.07 sqmm; 4mm = 12.6sqmm. Now, mine is used for 2mm wire, and I know it can process 3mm wire, but I'd definitely need to beef it up for 4mm wire. And I'd also choose PETG instead of the current PLA.
