A non-directional (radio) beacon (NDB) is a radio transmitter at a known location, used as an aviation navigational aid. NDB navigation consists of two parts - the automatic direction finder (ADF) equipment on the aircraft that detects an NDB's signal, and the NDB transmitter.
These beacons can guide a lost aircraft to safety and mostly broadcast 24/7.
They are intended to have a few hundred miles range, however, after dark this range can become much greater, while this is good new for radio fans who like to DX them, it’s not so good for the proper function of the NDB as confusion can arise.
