Ever wonder what it takes to rebuild a dash for a Farmall 504? Patience, Time, wire, wiring terminations, wire cutters, wire strippers, wire crimper, weather pak crimper, weather pak connections, and understanding wiring diagrams.
This was a great project that one of my daughters helped me with.
We had one major problem that took me weeks to figure out. The amp light wouldn’t go out and it wouldn’t get to 14 volts.
Took alternator to Black’s specialty service in Jennerstown, PA. It was charging great at 14.x. Spot on at 55 amp output. Huh? Now what?
Redid the old and just twisted and taped together wiring connections at the alternator plug. With a new plug. Nope.
New 10 awg wire from alternator stud to the starter battery stud. Nope.
When your AMP light doesn’t go out, remove the LED light from that socket and install a standard incandescent bulb!!!
That circuit needs some resistance and amp draw to trigger the alternator to charge at 14.x volts.
As soon as we did this the amp light went out and the voltage went straight to 14.x volts on our voltage gauge.
Steiner tractor parts may be a few dollars more, but the quality will outlast the cheapness. The main gauge was more than what I could find at some online stores, BUT it has the correct studs so ring terminals can be used for a lasting connection just like the original.
We also used a the Steiner tach gauge cable at 48” not shown in the video.
We also purchased and used their sending unit that sets into the gas tank as it has the proper brass float and matches their main gauge.

The voltage gauge/usb charger that replaced the cigarette lighter needed drill out a little bit with a variable drill bit.
I custom ground down a small washer to fit the original key switch. Welded the washer in. Then used a stepped drill bit to open the hills up to just the right size for the push/pull switch.
