This is a demonstration of how to setup your Turnigy 9X gear switch to remotely control a Turnigy receiver controlled switch. In this case my switch is connected to an LED strip but could be connected to a servo, buzzer, and many other components.
Here is the switch used in the video:

Dennis, thanks so much!! This is what makes this hobby great, people helping people out. I’m new to the hobby, I crash my multirotor frequently. Nothing is worse than searching through the bushes for a $400+ tricopter. Now I can switch on my discovery buzzer and track it down. Thanks for helping out us new guys, Dennis your videos are THE BEST!!!

Thank you for the video Dennis, this is very handy to know I was looking for a way to put some special effects on my quad and be able to control as and when I required obviously it does not stop at using LED so now my mind is in overdrive to see what else I can do with this facility. many thanks Dennis just brilliant.

Very informative video thanks! I am building a small battle robot and thanks to the video I now know how to activate the weapon motor using my Turnigy 9X and Turnigy radio controlled switch. I now need something similar to make my 2 controllers (for left and right drive motors) work using differential steering (mode 2), so that the right joystick controls left and right and the left joystick controls speed (throttle) and reverse and stop. Do you have any video that might help me set it up or know of one please?

Hi Dennis, im working on a project and im trying to use this switch for servo retracts for my Quad. The problem is that i have the Futaba 7C with the Naza and gimbal so i have no spare channels. I see that you state in video that this system doesnt have signal wire and that it probable works sensing the movements over 1500s . So can this work? Cab it control servos if Y cabled on CH3 ? Thank you please reply

Hi great vid! I'm using a separate battery for my light system on my quad and was wondering if I should only connect the signal wire from the switch to the receiver or if I still connect all 3. The reciever is getting power from the main battery so I'm confused on how to set it up. Thanks.
@dennisbaldwin
@dennisbaldwin 8 лет назад
+Alexander Horst Good question. To be honest I can't remember how I had mine setup, but I would try just the signal from receiver to the switch to see how that works. If that doesn't do anything you might need to find a common ground between the two. Sorry. I don't have my setup in front of me and have forgotten the details. Let us know what you find out. Thanks.

What if I don't use my bec to power my reciver?? I only use my bec to power the steering and lights. If I hook it up like all of these videos, I will have two sources of power going into the receiver. Does that make sense?
@JordanMowbray
@JordanMowbray 9 лет назад
I put them on a switch and hooked them to power and switched it and nothing happens. I went into my transmitter and scrolled through from 0% to 100% on both the high and low channels. Nothing is working. Do you know what else to do or how to troubleshoot this?
@dennisbaldwin
@dennisbaldwin 9 лет назад
Jordan Mowbray It's hard to say without more info. The wiring can be a little tricky so make sure you've double-checked all of that. This is a good reference: www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uploads/640583534X1121243X21.pdf Also, play with the jumpers to see if that helps. You may have already done this. If you continue to have problems check out www.garagepilots.com and post in our forums. Hopefully we can help you out over there.

Remember to connect the ground leads between the battery powering your reciever AND the battery powering the load you are trying to switch on and off. That is the trick that most people (my self including) miss.

Great video thanks. I have mine working great. It turn the lights on at anything above 1530ms and turns off with any thing under that. However, a feature I really wanted does not work. The failsafe were the lights are suppose to blinks alternately does not work. Tried everything. At failsafe the receiver sends a pre-determined PPM (for gear channel for example) normally under 1000ms. Can you tell me what PPM is the gear channel sending the remote switch at failsafe (no signal) to cause the alternate blinking? thanks, Gregory
@dennisbaldwin
@dennisbaldwin 9 лет назад
Philip Harrington Unfortunately I'm not sure what PPM it's sending at the moment. A friend is borrowing my T9X and he lives in Dallas. I may be getting together with him in a few weeks and I'll see if I can find out. Sorry I couldn't be of more assistance, but please share your findings if you figure this out. Thanks.

Dennis Baldwin Great video! Thanks for your guidance. I am having a little difficulty transferring this idea to my gimbal. I originally had it set up to control pitch via the P3 knob. But it wouldn't kick in until I was 1/2 way turned, and then would just go straight up or straight down; there was no in-between. So now I'd like to use a switch like in this video. I'd like the normal position to allow the gimbal to be facing straight forward. And the UP position of the switch to make the gimbal look straight down. How do I do this?? I have it set up and working, but it goes straight up and down like with the P3 knob.
@dennisbaldwin
@dennisbaldwin 9 лет назад
Michael Mellon I'm not 100% sure how to do it since I no longer have my T9X. I've moved on to the Taranis where this is pretty straightforward. Sorry and if you do figure it out then please sure with the rest of us! Thanks and best of luck.
@Michael_Mellon
@Michael_Mellon 9 лет назад
Dennis Baldwin No worries. I DID figure it out! I'm not sure if it is true or not, but I was told you cannot select "midpoints" on a switch. It's either fully on, or fully off. 100% either way. So I went back to the P3 knob and still couldn't get it dialed in. I know there is a difference if using a servo driven gimbal, but mine is brushless. With a servo driven gimbal, the servo should respond proportionally to the input from the knob. With a brushless, it's more like turning the knob, and waiting for the gimbal to catch up. Anyway, I came across a random video and happened to see a comment that helped me out. On the control board of the gimbal, I turned the pitch control all the way CCW (counter clock-wise). Now if my P3 is centered, so is the gimbal. And when I move it to a specified spot, it will now point the gimbal straight down!! Finally!!!

Hello , Thanks for the informative video . I have questions. I am using my Turnigy 5X 5Ch Mini Transmitter and Receiver. I want to use the CH 5 of this to on/off my 12 volt relay. Below are the questions:- 1.Do I need to use Turnigy Receiver Controlled Switch to achieve this ? 2. What is the output of the CH5 ? is it PWM or just binary on / off signal as per the ch 5 switch of the transmitter? Thanks in advance !!!!!
@dennisbaldwin
@dennisbaldwin 9 лет назад
+Kaustubh Ponkshe 1. I'm not sure so I would check your manual to see if it can handle a PWM signal. It's possible that it doesn't and you'll need some sort of receiver controlled switch to trigger the relay. 2. I haven't used the T5X but I would suspect that it definitely outputs a PWM signal. It's just a matter of whether or not it's configurable. In some cases the RX will send a low signal when the switch is down and high signal when it's up and generally that's configurable....at least with the 9X it is. Good luck and let us know how you get along.

I have purchased one of these switches and it works great switching a live ( + ) supply to my lights on my large 1:12th scale model of HMS Britannia..... I would also like to switch a negative ( - ) feed controlling a horn. The horn sound module uses a neg ( - ) switch cable that when grounded sounds the horn. Have you ever tried switching a neg ( - ) using this switch instead of a live ( + ) Would it cause a problem with its electronics causing damage.... My alternative would be to fit a replay to switch the neg ( - ) Great Video by the way..... Thanks Steve

@DJBBBOSS
@DJBBBOSS 9 лет назад
Dennis Baldwin I was rather hoping someone had already tried it... I will order another one and try it, worst that can happen is it will damage the electronic switch, there only £9.25 on eBay so it wont break the bank if it damages it.... I will send a Neg ( - ) through the red switching cables and test it using a multi meter as my sound module cost £60 and I would rather not damage it.... electronics have a habit of doing strange things when not connected as intended.... I will let you know the results..

So can the alternating not be turned off once the PWM goes below halfway? Might need to buy 3 of these. 1 hooked up to 1 switch, 2 hooked up to another in different configurations. But if the alternating can't be turned off with the switch, I will need to find another solution.

@dennisbaldwin
@dennisbaldwin 10 лет назад
That's a great question, Rui. I'm not sure it's possible to do in conjunction with this switch. You'd probably need a different setup as the pwms control whether or not the switch is on. Not 100% sure how to do this, but let me think on it. Let me know if you find anything out from your end.

Hi Dennis, maybe you can help me out here. If my ESC's max voltage is 11.1 to 14.8 volts (30amp), does that determine the maximum allowed voltage running through that ESC alone (considering each two of my LED strips are 12 volts each) ? And if so, does that mean both my LED's would be drawing 24 volts total from the ESC, making this whole set up unusable?
@dennisbaldwin
@dennisbaldwin 10 лет назад
ESCs are wired in parallel so that means the voltage is the same across each ESC. So if you have all ESCs positive terminal is connected together and each negative terminal is connected together with your power source then each ESC receives the same amount of voltage. So for a 3S battery 12V would be sent to each ESC, not 24V. Hope that helps.

Using this switch however the jumpers have no affect. I was recently doing some wiring with it on (idiot) and I a red wire touched a bare black contact. Now the light's are stuck on, is the switch fried?
@dennisbaldwin
@dennisbaldwin 9 лет назад
Ryan Jones There's a good chance if there was voltage on the leads when you touched them together. But if the LEDs are on it tells me that the switch is closed and therefore power is getting across. It's hard to say without seeing your setup. If you want to take some pics and post them in the forums at www.garagepilots.com maybe we can help you out. As a side note when it comes to cheap parts like these I normally order 2 because I've made similar mistakes in the past. I know that doesn't help you right now, but wanted to share.
@adesades01
@adesades01 6 лет назад
This probably has a small power mosfet to do the switching. Mosfets usually fail shorted and if the current exceeds limits the smoke gets out. I think I will order 2 as well.
