Let's build a super cheap quad together! This is step three of the Bacon's Budget Build sub $250 FPV drone build, and it is time to install all of the flight electronics along with the video and control systems. In the last step, we installed the SpeedyBee ESC and our Xing E Pro 2207 motors. This step will cover getting the SpeedyBee F405 v3 flight controller installed, wiring up the SpeedyBee TX800 analog VTX along with the Runcam Phoenix 2 camera, and connecting our HappyModel EP1 ELRS receiver. If you are a building newb, this step by step guide will get you to the finish line...and if you are a pro maybe I can show you some new tips!
Follow along with the budget build in step 4:

Well thank you!! I am just hoping it goes to someone who will love it and get a whole lot of use out of it. No sense in it hanging on my wall along side the other one when it could be living an exciting life as someone's daily driver! Btw, I still love my TH2F too. I fly the pork chop a little more often since it is digital, but me and that TH2F go way back so I can't just let it become a wall decoration, lol.

Wonderful resource! You helped me build my first drone ❤. Just a word of advice to everyone: it's a good idea to check for accidental connections between solder joints with a multimeter after every soldering session.

That is awesome!! Also a great tip on checking continuity of your solder joints. I tend to do that pretty often myself, and I probably should have brought that up in the series. On the next one I will make sure to get that in there :)

Bacon, I love this series and you give me confidence to continue building. Btw, last video you told me to check the ESC because of the motor twitching… I opened it up with the intent to do that and immediately saw the capacitor was missing. Replaced that and inspected the ESC (which was still good) and had a brief test flight today and voila! I have messed with everything BUT the ESC. BetaFlight, motors, checked the RX, etc. Thank you so much! 🎉

Hey, you got it figured out!!!!! I bet that cap being off of their either desync'd you due to a voltage spike or rattling around in there was making contact with something randomly. Those kinds of things are the worst since you have to tear the whole thing apart for something so simple, lol. At least it wasn't anything you had to spend money on!!! I don't have a 3D printer. I'm building this with the runcam wasp. How do I buy an antenna holder for it? it would be nice if there was something on get fpv or amazon(i'm already ordering from them and I would prefer not to have to pay more shipping). How do I know if the holder will fit my frame and my wasp? Does it have to specify the frame or the Rucam wasp? or will anything for the caddx vista work? Thanks for the help. There's no way I would be able to do this if it weren't for the work that you and other youtubers spend making this info so much more accessible.
@BaconNinjaFPV
@BaconNinjaFPV Год назад
So I actually put a wasp antenna in the holder I used for this analog build. It does take a little trimming to take up a bit of the slack, but a couple of zip ties around it and a little E6000 glue inside it hold it pretty darn good! I cant wait to hear how it flies when you get it done. that is always the best part for me :)

Great vid! my quad is almost done! What are the potential consequences of not soft mounting the VTX?
@BaconNinjaFPV
@BaconNinjaFPV Год назад
Thank you! Really it is just about the possibility of damage during a crash. With soft mounting you are less likely to break a component off of the board or crack a trace during an impact. When it is firmly mounted to the quad with no give, all of the force is transferred from the stiff carbon frame into mounted boards and that can be quite a bit for small solder pads to take.
@jonw1661
@jonw1661 Год назад
I did learn the hard way. if you don't install it with the spacer underneath, and you put the thing flat on the deck, there won't be enough room to plug the antenna connection in!

Nope, you can totally go DJI with this! I have had a few people show me their builds after doing it and it works out well :) Just have to make some config adjustments to accommodate that digital system, but it isn't too bad. For the heat shrink, it is really whatever you want to use. I just use the clear so that I could see any tears in there, but it really isn't too big of a deal.

What you will want is an MMCX connector with a 90 degree angle. You will also want something with a straw on it so that you can hold it with the mount. The longer the straw, the floppier it will be, so just make sure it isn't suuuuuper long.

Unfortunately the HappyModel EP1 does often go out of stock :( While you can use any other ELRS recevier that is in the 2.4GHz band, the printed parts included in the files for this build will only work with that particular HappyModel board. There are some other similar printed parts available online for receivers from RadioMaster though if you wanted to print something for that brand instead.

@BaconNinjaFPV

@connoredmondson4344 Год назад
For the ELRS reciever, the wiring diagram shows you use the 5V and ground pad on the second row from the bottom, but on your drone it looks like you use the 4V5 pad and G pad on bottom row. Is there a difference?
@BaconNinjaFPV
@BaconNinjaFPV Год назад
Good catch! I was trying the 4.5v pad just to see if it was stable enough to support running the receiver since it was in line with the ground pad. Turns out, the EP1 doesn't like 4.5v so I put it on the 5v in the diagram so that nobody else would have issues with it.

I know the ELRS receiver will not work on uart 6 on the speedy bee F405. It only seems to work on the number 2 uart but did you have any other problems with using the ELRS receiver with this flight controller like bad tune issues. Motors twitching.?
@BaconNinjaFPV
@BaconNinjaFPV 5 месяцев назад
The ELRS receiver can actually go wherever you would like as long as you set up the ports tab of betaflight correctly :) in the case of this build, we will flash a CLI file that enables the RF link on uart 6 since we used that one down there in it. It actually tends to cause more trouble putting the ELRS receiver on UART 2 with this FC (even though the manufacturer recommends it) since sometimes that UART does things that puts the receiver into emergency recovery mode when booted from a battery. As for any issues, it is always a good idea to apply the ELRS preset in the presets tab of betaflight to make sure the jitter correction and stick smoothing things that are necessary for the packet rate you are using get applied.
@FPZzzz
@FPZzzz 5 месяцев назад
Maybe that's why I am having trouble on Uart 2. A lot of info here. I am using BF 4.3 there is no ELRS option, so I used Crossfire option. Also would like to know where to get the CLI file to use another port. Like Uart 6. @@BaconNinjaFPV

Hey Mr. Bacon question. I have purchased a quad that is rated for 6s but I’m using 4s batteries is this a problem? I have flown it and there is no issues or heated motors and it flys normal. I just don’t want to purchase 6s batteries. Let me know your thoughts. Thanks and keep up the good work.
@BaconNinjaFPV
@BaconNinjaFPV Год назад
Hey! So no, running 4S packs on a 6S quad wont hurt it. The other way around is a problem for sure, but since you are going under the rated voltage the motors won't get burned up or anything. The only issue you will have is that there will be significantly less power, but some people actually prefer that. Heck, if you are still learning, lots of people run a throttle scale to tone down their 6S quads anyway. By using 4S packs on a 6S build, you are basically taking 33% of the power away so it has almost the same impact. Only difference is that the FC wont have access to the full power if it needs it, but it doesn't always need it anyway.

I went with what I did to make as much budget room for a decent camera as I could since that really impacts the flying experience, but a build with those parts you listed would be just as good for a few extra dollars.

I will for sure! it takes me about a week to shoot, edit, and publish each step for this project, so I apologize for having to wait between them. If you already understand the flashing process, basically you can just flash BF 4.3.1 to your FC, then BlueJay to your ESC, and use the CLI dump I have in the google drive link for everything else. I have the RC preset loaded for ELRS 250hz, so if you aren't running that packet rate you would need to flash the preset for the correct one as well.

Hi, you promised to show how to use multimeter instead of smoke-stoper
@BaconNinjaFPV
@BaconNinjaFPV Год назад
Indeed, I sure did. I had it in the video originally, but so many people got upset about it not being a valid enough test that I had to chop it out. It is pretty easy to do though, so I will give you the steps. First you need to put your meter in continuity test mode. Once you get that don, just put one probe on each lug inside the XT60 plug. You may hear a beep for a second or two at first while the capacitor charges, but then if everything is good the beep will stop. Once it does, perform the test a couple more times and make sure it doesn't beep again. If the beep never stops, or you keep getting a beep while performing the follow up tests, then you may have a short.

how do you install a standard receiver in it like for a SKyFly radio.
@BaconNinjaFPV
@BaconNinjaFPV 10 месяцев назад
It is really going to depend on the protocol your receiver is using. If it is something like SBUS, there is a pad specified by SpeedyBee in their official diagrams for where that should go since it is usually inverted and that pad is set up especially for that. Outside of the change in pads, you would also need to change the UART selected for SerialRX in the ports tab of BetaFlight to match the one that pad is attached to in the hardware. Then you would need to go into the receiver tab and switch the protocol to the one your receiver uses. Other protocols can be done over the same UART I am using for ELRS in this one, but there are some slight variations for each of the different protocols that you might be using.

Meh. I was hoping to learn how to use Camera Control in Betaflight, since I want to change it from NTSC to PAL. I flashed the Speedybee with 4.5 and added Camera_control but is seems you have to designate a PIN. And I don't know what is the CC pin called.

Nice ,great detail..I still haven't received my dang antenna for my build it was ordered on the 14th.ha my first build has been setting on the workbench for 7 are 8 days never even had power to it.its driving me nuts just reorder antenna yesterday. I used the tbs sixty9 in my build for vtx and rx. Since I'm already in the tbs coud .so I had to use the 9v pad right by the vtx pad. I'm hoping I got everything right.
@BaconNinjaFPV
@BaconNinjaFPV Год назад
Geez, I hate when that happens! It is always the small little things that hang up a new build, lol. You will be absolutely fine running the sixty9 in this with the 9v pad instead of the 5v I am running the video/control systems on. If you use the same UARTs for control and smart audio, my CLI dump should work for you too with some minor adjustments. Instead of IRC in the ports tab for VTX control you are going to want to use Smart Audio, and you will have to use a preset for crossfire to get the smoothing right since I have this one set up for ELRS. Other than that, shouldn't be an issue at all!

Hello nice build, just end the build and dont get power on the fc, only can power by usb. Someone can give an idea
@BaconNinjaFPV
@BaconNinjaFPV Год назад
that sounds like an issue with the harness between your flight controller and the ESC. If your FC will only power from USB, then something is going on with it getting power from the pack via the ESC. I would check the harness to make sure it isn't loose or backwards and completely re-seat it in the process.

If you want to run an SBUS receiver, just wire that one up to the power, ground, and SBUS pad near the top right of the FC. You will have to change the Serial RX in the ports tab to UART 2 though and change the protocol to SBUS in the receiver tab to get it all working.
