Wisconsin VH4(D) Magneto timing:
1) Identify and remove #1 spark plug
2) Rotate engine by hand clockwise looking from front
3) With finger over #1 spark plug hole you will know when piston is coming up on compression stroke
4) Continue until mark on flywheel is at vertical centerline
5) Remove inspection bung in front of magneto
6) Remove distributor cap from magneto and place the rotor at about the 2 o'clock position looking from the rear
7) Identify the gear tooth with the 'x' stamped onto it
8) Assemble magneto to engine with the 'x' tooth visible in the bottom half of the inspection hole
9) Firing order is 1-3-4-2. Wires are solid wire core and are easily traceable using an ohmmeter with one lead at each end of the plug wire.
10) #1 marked terminal is at the top RH (~2 o'clock) position when looking from the rear. Rotation for the 1-3-4-2 firing order is clockwise
(Magneto point gap calls for .015". Spark plug gap calls for .030". For long mag life set plug gap to .020" or .025".)
(If engine may sit idle for a long time, get in the habit of rotating the engine enough to make the impulse trip. The points will be open and there is less chance of the points oxidizing.)

Fixing to use your video to time my VH4D in a early 70s International skid steer. Prior owner said if quit firing so I pulled mag and going thru it now hopefully condenser went out , I have new points and condenser to install and clean it up before install.

Greetings does VH4D magneto have a bolt on bracket for felt or wick u lube up ?? Think im missing one if such exists

Greetings from NC Can u tell me the proper index for mag upon install on VH4D ? I checked mine after rebuild with spark plug wire on my bench and its firing so should the magneto after #3 fires just just load impulse coupler and once it snaps for number one just install with X in inspection hole ??? My rotor button is past # 1 terminal at this point

After # 2 cyl sorry not number 3 ## My manual states after # 1 spark is located simply hold gear and install with X shown in lower inspection hold but curious why rotor button is so far past # 1 terminal location at this setting ?

@@chriscamp8608 The impulse, the unit that causes the 'clicking' noise at low cranking speeds 1) moves the coil past the magnet at high speed for strong spark when starting. 2) Delays the spark at cranking speed to prevent 'kickback'. So, yea, the rotor appears out of proper position, but once running, the flyweights bring the impulse out of operation and the rotor/point combo would appear correct. Thank you for the question.

Greetings - oil filler cap original one was replaced by prior owner with something that I dont consider adequate because it has hole for water to enter engine so I bought a new cap that was used on early chevy valve covers. Just curious if factory one was sealed when installed or does engine have to breath thru fill hole ? Thanks

Yes, the original filler cap, as shown in the video, is as you say, a smooth, rainproof cover with a steel mesh inside.

Ok thank you original one long gone but I bought something that covers hole safely but no PCV effect basically sealed so I was just curious if ok again thank you

@@chriscamp8608 'Basically sealed'... any combustion leakage past the rings has to have a place to escape or the crankcase will be pressured up, perhaps pushing oil out the seals

Yes, the magneto style that is correct for the VH4 and the VH4D is a 'Teledyne Wisconsin Y97'. As shown in the video above the impulse rotates CW when viewed from the front. This is a reduction type mag, meaning the rotor turns half speed and opposite direction of the impulse gear. Sorry for the tardy reply.

I'm in Canada and deal with a business near Steinbach, Manitoba. Adrian's magneto service. Very pleased with his service over the years. Around $400.

Yes, it can make a mess, try a shallow pan to catch it. Dirt will sit in that casting/housing, just begging to be cleaned.

@@zeketheantiquefreak8518 Thank you Sir Im sure mine will be dirty some dummy pit a old Ford style breather that housed rubber hose that went to carb or intake pcv system but no hose was in it so rain water could and did enter oil pan etc. I opened brass valve on drain hose and nothing came out until I forced air in hole then water and oil nasty mix came out so I plan on flushing motor out several times with fresh oil and a little trans fluid added because it cleans good and keep rpms low while running.

@@chriscamp8608 The only way to truly clean the crankcase is to pull off that oil pan cover. There are parts of the block casting that can trap surprising amounts of dirt.

@@zeketheantiquefreak8518 Yes sir - @@@ I hope im lucky and not instant issues reveal themselves upon fire up / previous owner said it quit firing and was parked !!! I just purchased this unit and tore into magneto upon initial discovery Cap was cracked and nylon gear had a tooth broke off because someone put the wrong condenser in there was to big worked loose contacted tooth. I have total rebuilt kit en route with a new gear and will replace EVERYTHING inside and test old stuff next week so I can keep anything good and toss defective items.
