Finally someone on youtube who actually makes a well formalised video. I've already taught myself this song to help learn the guitar to, but this vid makes me understand a more complex arrangement for the song. Your structure is awesome. A full playthrough demonstrating not just the PRECISE chord progressions but also what string + when/how to strum neatly! Then a breakdown of the individual parts, not to mention slowed down, so beginners and learners can actually KEEP UP WITH THE VIDEO. Much appreciated. Lastly the fact that you choose not to talk, or at least keep it to an extreme minimum is duly noted!!! You clearly understand the people watching your videos arent here to listen to someone much better than them talk, they are here to learn and listen to the music and understand how to play it by actually learning vicariously as soon as possible!!! In other words I love it that you don't muck around with stupid unnecessary dialogue (like so many other annoying video-makers) by just getting straight to the point and showing us everything we need to know to play the song as it goes along!!! Thanks so much for a modest lesson! Subbed
Recommendation: Make the Up arrow a different color from the down arrow. That way Chords and notes can be watched with peripheral vision on the strum direction.
Why am I just now finding you Alan? Just like that you moved up 100 fold and you are at the top my my list now for lessons. Music has saved my life...People like you save lives without knowing it! Keep sharing the love of music...The language of everything...Real music needs to make a comeback..
Alan, I sincerely wish to thank you for the lessons you have provided to those of us wanting to become better guitar players. I have been trying to play for the last 36 years and now, because of your videos, I am finally able to play a complete song. I hope you are aware of the joy you have brought to so many people and that they are able to express that to you. Thank you so much.
So, so you think you can tell Heaven from hell Blue skies from pain Can you tell a green field From a cold steel rail? A smile from a veil? Do you think you can tell? Did they get you to trade Your heroes for ghosts? Hot ashes for trees? Hot air for a cool breeze? Cold comfort for change? Did you exchange A walk on part in the war For a lead role in a cage? How I wish, how I wish you were here We're just two lost souls Swimming in a fish bowl Year after year Running over the same old ground And how we found The same old fears Wish you were here
I love your picking tetorual box. I been playing this song and been doing all wrong. Thank you for sharing the secrets of the magic of expression through sound waves.
+Alan Robinson after having practiced it for 2 months now for two months now and undoubtedly having struggled playing this the same as you, I have a recommendation which I would like to share with you. I struggled a lot with the strumming pattern which looked like DDUUDDUUD obviously as a beginner but indeed turned out to be DXXX DUXU DXXX DUXU which is pretty difficult to catch it out from the tabs in your video. I hope you can put it in the your future videos, maybe at the end. Anyways, thanks a lot again for the effort into making these. Really appreciate it. :)
I just have to say, your method and style of teaching guitar playing is pure genius, this is no exaggeration. I have learned so much more, in a very short period of time, than I have with any other teacher on RU-vid. Your gifted talent for singing, playing, and teaching guitar is phenomenal. I admire and thank you sir, from the bottom of my heart!
Hi, its not a dumb question; usually I listen to the song a lot and play along until I find a rhythm that fits. Some songs have a definite strumming pattern that defines the song, others are more open to interpretation - experience helps. Cheers, Alan :)
Your providing a great service, and I for one thank you. See I used to be a decent guitarist/singer/songwriter, then, (as with a lot of musicians from the 70's, & 80's) I got hooked to other "things". Well now it's about 25 - 30 years later, and I've just rebought some guitars, (Kind-of, I used to have an Ovation, & an SG.,) Now I have a Martin, and an Ibenez Studio Master. (Both great guitars in their own right) but I do miss that SG, they just don't make like that anymore. and you're helping me to get my chops back and up and running once again so maybe this coming Fall/summer, I can get some little acoustic gigs in some local bars down here at the Jersey Shore, (Asbury Park, Belmar, Point Pleasant etc...) I've already got my signature cover of "Tangled up in Blue", "A Midsummers Nights Toast" "Grand Central Station" Wish you were here, "The Reaper", "Lily, Rosemary & The Jack of Hearts". "Here Comes The Sun" and a few originals. You've saved me so much time, I might be able to get a few gigs at the end of this summer! Keep up the great work. Thanks again
Wonderful. Where other teachers hold long speeches you simply let the music speak in outstanding clarity supported by synchonous animated simple pictures. This is exactly the teaching style I prefer. Thank you very much, Alan
Your channel sure creating many groups (in garage) around the world. Which, without your incredibly detailed and accurate explanation, might never they have started as musicians. I know I repeat. But I have to write it again. Your work here on youtube has become a benchmark for others trying to create a music tutorial. The highest of benchmark.
An admission from a student of the Alan Robinson Project. I already play this song. But I can not really read music. When my garage band picked the tune I hit the internet and after many hours of crappy downloads and more hours trying to make sense of it, we did it ok. That was back in 2011. I now always search Alan's library of instruction first. His honest effort to be true to any song, gives me great comfort knowing I can play this to the original track if must be. Some of my best wishing friends claimed too know a song. But when I saw the chords they were using. Well no. Yes I do not know the correct chords but I can still tell when you are not even close. But when my band wanted to do Rock and Roll Music by Chuck Berry ( the master ) We went with a Beach Boys version which was simple E - A - B, all majors. The Beatles did their version in A major so I did not feel so bad.Chuck started in Eb. I was happy to know, I was able to keep-up on my keyboards while Alan is playing: Wish You Were Here, and wE sounded ok. Real OK ! Except that I could not keep up with him when he was finger-picking out the tune. Later he plays the song so freaking slow and yet still in correct time. Now that takes practice. No way around it. Just saying....my bad
Hi Alan, I'm a beginner. This week I bought first acoustic guitar and spent many hours a day! Im into Pink Floyd so I use this nice video to improve my skills. FROM JAPAN WITH LOVE!!!!!!!
Hi there, thank you for your nice comment. You can find a song sheet for this (and many other Pink Floyd songs) here at my free website which might help you - guitartutorman.com/pink-floyd-wish-you-were-here/ All the best to you from Wales UK - Alan 😊
One thing I love is pink Floyd and the legacy it left behind for us 😘 .... And musicians like you make it easy for us to wonder how much effort they had put in those times to get such master verses out of that piece of wood
Alan!! estas haciendo posible unos de mis sueños.... tocar canciones de Pink Floyd.... la verdad me conmueve y me emociona muchísimo, muchísimas gracias! un gran abrazo!
Can I just say that you post the best guitar tutorial videos on all of youtube? Finally lessons that are super easy to follow! I'm a beginner and I've advanced so much from your videos. So thanks, man.
I love how every pick and strum is documented. I is tremendously easy to follow this way. I also love how it is to the point and consistent. Thanks for your thorough efforts.
I thought that was a lovely interpretation. I've been playing for a year and a half now and am still very much a beginner. This looks like a little bit of a challenge to learn, but I also think it's within my abilities. Instantly recognisable and very touching. It's on my to-learn list! Thanks!
After a long and arduous search i've finally found a tutorial with on-screen chord and strum mapping .This is the best i've come across ; most guitar videos that require us to squint at the poorly lit fretboard positions. I tip my hat to you.
Watching you since 2011 and even today I was wondering you put such an effort on each guitar tutorial. I mean all those animated instruction strumming pattern even the solos. Bravo man. You are awesome.
Hey! With my great appreciation I am writing you tell how much I love your lessons! They make guitar playing so easy and exciting! I am a beginner and I get inspired by each video lesson of yours! Thank you so much for this great job!
Your voice adapts to any song and makes it your own. I absolutely love it! You've taken songs such as Bob Marley's Redemption Song and This one as well as many , many others and made it your own. Keep jammin!!
As a former piano student who is now learning guitar, I always find guitar songs look so EASY! I think "Ohhh, that song is only chords and single notes! Easy!" But then I am deceived by how easy such things are on a piano, compared to a guitar. Lol Chords on piano are really peace-o-cake. Same for making a note 'sound' right. Both are tricky as hell when you just start guitar. Better continue practicing! :P
Alan Robinson Thanks :) I'll truly cherish the day I'll be able to play this song. It's one of my faves. But still a long road ahead of me. A beautiful, musical journey :)
Amazing setup I always check your videos first, I love the fact that you play full speed first and that you sing. Much praise for all your hard work. I show your videos to my neices who are just starting to learn and they love you. Thanks for helping to inspire the younglings, as well as the old guys trying to relearn.
Thank you for sharing this, i had picked up a few bad habits playing this song ie wrong strumming pattern and finger positioning but you have fixed them all with this great video tutorial.
Your lessons are incredible. I don't believe people realize how beautifully these are produced. The composition with the live playing and the strumming pattern and chord diagrams all synchronized together. At the beginning you put all the chords out there for a starter. Nicely done and very much appreciated. You've already taught me several songs in just a few weeks since I discovered you. Thank you.
You've already taught me a few songs. So many lessons dwell too much on finger placement, demonstrating picking patterns, etc. I like your lessons particularly because they are geared toward an audience who already knows chord shapes and the basics. So your lessons are perfect for me. You show all the chords upfront with diagrams. And then playing the whole song helps tremendously. Plus, your lessons are consistent. You know what to expect. Yeah, keep posting Alan.
I've never played but always wanted to. I watched your pigs on the wing video. I borrowed a guitar. I've played every day for two months. I'm obsessed. If I ever saw you in person, I'd probably spontaneously hug you. Thanks.
Well done, man! Glad to have such a teacher.......now i'm able to play that great classic by Pink Floyd........thanks Alan! Your really helping me a lot!!!!
This is wonderfully done. I'm a longtime drummer who just started learning acoustic, for in no small measure, being able to play this beautiful Pink Floyd song from perhaps my all-time favorite record. This video makes me feel like I can get there from here. The graphics are spot-on as is the format, and there's not the jibber-jabber that puts me off of some otherwise nice tutorials due to a microsecond attention span. Plus you sing well. All killer, no filler. Thanks for this. I expect I'll end up watching this 1000 times.
Man i just would like to thank you.... this is my favorite pink floyd song ...and that accoustic version make me tremble... i'll learn it... thank you!...
Great work! This is definitely the best tutorial for this song I've seen, and one of the clearest and best guitar tutorials I've ever seen on RU-vid. As a guitarist I think you can tell when someone has just given the track a listen-through and then slapped a 'lesson' online, as opposed to when someone who clearly loves the music has dedicated a great deal of time and effort to it. Thanks.
One of the best sites for learning how to play the guitar. Graphics for chords and strumming are very useful. Thanks a lot; and keep up the good work ...
wow, i was searching for a good tutorial video, then i found this, and i tell myself "finally a video whit chords on the screen and strums", but then you start the singing part and give me the goosebumps, really good singing man, and good video. Greetings from chile.
I haven't picked up guitar in ages but because of your simple lessons I can play like a champ again and I want to thank you you're so amazing dude keep it up !!!! c:
Thank you so much for doing this! I can't afford lessons right now because of college, but I have now found a way to learn how to play songs! thank you so much
I have said it again on another video but I need to say it again at this particular point with this song. You by far make one of the best guitar tutorials there is, Sir. Especially for somewhat beginners and free time autodidacts like me. Please, keep on going. All the best!
