I like what you said about accumulating a library. That the CD is there when you want it. I get so tired when people ask me why do I need so many CDs (and I only have around 2000). I've been collecting since then mid 80s but during that time I got married and raised a family and also love to read. I've recently retired and the children are grown so it's a joy now to listen to music (like you I sit in front of my stereo and concentrate on the music). So many people today just stream music in the background while they do other things. They never understand the joy of a music library and to be devoted to the music seriously.

That's almost my experience, Steve. I always enjoyed music, but during my years of being a production manager time was limited. Having now retired about three years ago I now have a lot more time to listen and build back the collection I once had of vinyl plus a lot of new discoveries. My collection fits on three shelving units, two 960's and one smaller about 600 so my capacity is around 2,500 and is not completely full (although I'm getting there). Lately I'd guess I listen to half a dozen albums a day, sometimes while doing other things. I also tend to watch one or two classic movies a day in the evening. I also have a DVD and blu-ray collection that takes up what used to be a dining room. I have no idea how many are in there. I should try to calculate that sometime.

I own 15,000 CD's. Listening to the CD's I bring in, displaying and categorising has became a personal hobby that I have enjoyed for years and for me, the space i have designated, it has replaced a "typical" man cave that most men may have. I listen to 5-8 CDs a day and I 'm a draftsman.

Hi Brendon, I havde 8000 to 9000 CDs. I listen to about 6 hours of music per weekday, and 10 or 12 on weekends. I don't watch TV much, just hockey games with our Jets. I do spend an hour or so watching RU-vid videos. I like to listen closely to music so I rarely do anything else at the same time. Thanks for a great video!

Awesome video. I get the same question all the time. Isn't a few albums enough??? Especially the younger kids today who stream everything. Love the library comment. I've tried to explain that but people don't get it. I love I have access to my music 24/7 and can listen to an album in my collection anytime, anywhere.

My biggest problem of the moment is listening to backlog. I have nearly 2400 CDs, 2100 LPs and probably 75 or so box sets. Between March-July 2020 when I was working remotely (I am also an architect) I was listening to 6-8 hours of music a day on Spotify though my headphones. I discovered so much new stuff and went down so many rabbit holes that I ended up buying so many albums (mainly CDs) that I built up a backlog of almost 400. The new discoveries along with new release purchases just started to feel overwhelming. I have a 2 year old daughter so it's hard to get listening time in, but I usually get about 2-3 hours in a night and have also tried my hardest to catch up. I am now at around 80 items. I want to get though all of them so I can start re=enjoying the stuff already in my collection. I feel such an obligation to listen to stuff I haven't listened to yet.
@BrendonSnyder
@BrendonSnyder 2 года назад
Fortunately I don’t get a backlog based on how many albums I listen to a day. My biggest issue is keeping up with how fast I go through albums and what’s next on my list.

Refreshing that despite the CD collection, you're still happy to stream : -) Some purists would have to rip their collection to ogg or flac, and then carry several terabytes of data (although I think the largest microSD card is 1TB, ... so your collection would span several.) Streaming definitely has it's place, I like Spotify making suggestions of bands I might be interested in, and the mixes of related bands, I've found new bands to follow that way,.. but then I go buy the CDs : -)

I still have all of my CDs which number only in the hundreds and people think I'm weird for not switching to digital/steaming. I am very picky about what I like so that is why my collection is in the hundreds rather than thousands. I enjoy nearly all genres of music and despite this I have trouble finding albums that I want to listen to. So I listen to the same albums dozens of times. And the number of new albums I buy has been steadily decreasing every year. I probably bought less than five last year. As I get older and work from home now, I've learned to really enjoy silence.

Twelve albums in a day is a fair amount. I tend to listen to around 4, maybe 5, but repeated, listening through headphones connected to my system or wireless cans to my phone when streaming is more convenient, i also listen via speakers be it my systems or bluetooth. I enjoy sitting in my listening chair, tuning everything else out, and just enjoying albums new or repeated listens of favourite records. it is for me a pure joy, my happy place, to get away from the world and just let the melodies and lyrics take me on a new or beloved path. Music is a pleasure, one which has helped me in life. Building my collection is like assembling a crew, piloted by the best, personal best, I should say, musical guides. Long may your journey continue, and your channel thrive.

Nice to see your stereo set up. I have a 164 CDS. Some of them are from the 80s when I was in high school. I like the look of a classic 80s CD. I also have 60 records and about 40 45rpm singles. They are all albums I really like. Everyone has their own way of collecting music. I am more Quality over Quantity and buy what I like or it will sit on the shelf and not get played. Either way, it's entertaining to see you collecting and listen to all the knowledge about bands and their discography. 😊❤👍

Is that a Grassroots Grassroots CD I see!? Man, LOVE those 60s Folkrock guys and the entire Folkrock movement in general,including The Byrds and The Beau Brummels. I've got 15 000 CDs in my collection and my favourite genres are 60s and 70s poprock, 70s singer songwriter, Soft Rock and 60s subgenres like Soft Pop and Sunshine pop/Popsike. I'm really not into Heavy Metal or Hard Rock but I love learning about music genres I know little about and that's why I enjoy this marvellous channel by Brendon. Sure, I have some Queen, KISS and Journey in my collection but that's about it. My family think I've got waaay too many CDs but personally I don't agree! I only collect CDs I WANT in my collection and listen to approximately 10 CDs a day, not necessarily going thru the whole CDs but favourite tracks and such although I DO love playing my albums from start to finish to get that nice flow.

Very nice video, Brendon. That type of video that only a collector would appreciate, I guess. I am married and have a child but I do manage to squeeze in quite a lot of music listening in my routine. I grew up hearing music and none of it was newborn/baby orientated and I think I turned out quite ok with a huge passion for music. And that's how I can spend time with my daughter while listening to Kansas records, like today, for example. Very nice explanation about owning so many cds. I have around 1800-1900 and of course maybe years go by without listening to certain ones, but I know they are there and available to me. I kept a music listening diary for the entire 2020 and I think the average was around 7 albums a day. Of course, being able to listen to music in work and also working from home a few days a week helped a great deal. Nothing better that putting a cd on and dive into it, really giving it full attention.

I had forgotten to listen to him on Sunday his birthday. So I made it up yesterday. Didn’t get all the way through. Today I listened to an album in reverse order. The album: US Artist: Peter Gabriel. It definitely gives the album a different feel. I had this idea came to me suddenly. First song I thought of was “Secret World” Boom a new way to listen to the albums.

I'm a music enthusiast who collects primarily jazz and R&B. I focus on Redbook CDs,SACDs and XRCDs. I study the artist and th engineers who transfer their analog tapes to the various mediums available today. I probably have around 5,000 Cds and Vinyl Records. It's my library and I have enjoyed building it and treaching my family and friends the history and beauty of Jazz and R&B. Most folks may not understand our passion for music and often times are unable to appreciate our journey and the pure pleasure we get from collecting and listening to our treasures. That's cool cause in ain't stopping us any time soon lol...

Such an interesting dynamic between buying as much music as we collectors do and actually finding time to listen to it all. I’m the kind of person who has new stuff coming in all the time, like you, so in order to really learn and know an album, multiple listens are required. I like to really feel something about the music I’m listening to, if you know what I mean. Learning albums front to back is so much easier when you are a young person. As an adult I find there is so much more product to consume in so many different ways, it’s really difficult to know a record as well as it was when I was a younger person. Sure there will be new records coming out that we absolutely love and will know by heart, but I have come to the realization that there are many others that will never be imbedded in our minds like we’d want them to be. I know that I really know an album when I can hear in my mind the beginning of the next track about to come in while the current track is fading out. That’s when I really know an album. I wish they could all be this way, but I know at 55 years old there is stuff in my collection that just isn’t going to get the royal treatment like most stuff did when I was much younger and had fewer responsibilities in life. Gotta just find the time and whatever way is best for you to enjoy as much of your music as you possibly can, all the while juggling other responsibilities in life. I will say that while a lot of people look down on it, I say thank God for streaming. Without it we would all have far less time to spend with our collections. Life evolves and so does technology. Streaming is a big deal for listening to music on the go and also for being able to try out a band or album before deciding to purchase. We don’t all work from home and we can’t bring our record collections with us. I put all my music on my phone and use that tool to its fullest. In my car alone is when I really have the fewest distractions and can really devour music and be able to get what I want out of my listening experience. Just gotta do you and enjoy what you can. Rock On!

Hi Brenden, Great channel. It seems more like you have an archived collection. You don't just buy anything but do your due diligence first. I have about 4k, but usually do a lot of artist and album research though I allow for finds and serendipity in record shops etc. I actually got a great well mastered Astrud Gilberto hits collection at the Goodwill for $4 a few years ago and discovered Gin Wigmore Gravel and Wine based on nothing more than a cd album cover. 2 moments of serendipity. I used to hit the old Tower Records in lower Manhattan back in the day for browsing. I think I picked up the lp Rough Mix by Townsend and Ronnie Lane there that I still have today, that's close to 40 years ago!

Very true. Unless I know the artist I don’t buy anything without checking it out first. I’m particular about what goes into the collection. For me it’s not just about having a big number of albums. It’s that I actually want all of the albums and they happen to add up to a big amount.

I have around 2500 CDs and now have probably matched that number with downloads, mainly from iTunes or Amazon mp3- so I'm at around the 5000 mark. I also stream a lot as I work at home and listen to everything through my laptop and speaker system thats set up in my home office space. I'll still buy new releases and remaster/remixes from favourites - like the new Tull nad the recent Sabbath Technical Ecstasy. I'd also buy CDs from bands that dont have their music on streaming services if they are interesting enough - such as Quill's Riding Rainbows or Tallis' In Ali Musica Spero, and if a stream sounds really good I'll either buy the download or physical product, just to have it available in my library. On a day when I'm not in meetings I'd listen to around 5 to 6 hours or so of music. I'll usually listen to a couple of new CDs or downloads, then I'll stream something that I've heard about and want to check out, then I'll either pick a band or artist and set their albums to play in sequence, or I'll click on one of my own compiled anthologies. By which time its usually around 6 pm and time to go make the evening meal for the family and settle down to watch TV for a couple of hours. Weekenads will depend on what I've got lined up to do - or what I've had lined up for me. Usually though It'll be a bit less than during the week. I've uploaded all my CDs onto an external hard drive on which I also store my downloads. I have set up a library with a number of folders that are Rock, Metal, Prog, Jazz, Fusion, Pop and General, Orchestral, Easy Listening and Soundtracks. Each has one or more subfolders by region- so that I can choose UK , European, US/Canada, Worldwide, and Various Artists - if a band is a mix I'll usually put it in the more dominant or more intuituve place - so Transatlantic goes in US Prog, while The Flower Kings will go in European. Most of my CDs live in storage shelving in my loft though I have my favourite bands on shelves in my office where I also store my 400 or so vinyl records, even though I dont have a turntable to play them on at them moment, however I still like to pore over the sleeve when listening - around 95% of my vinyl is on CD and in my hard disk library as well.

Media Collecting can be a generational thing too Those born into the download, stream era post 2000 have never known how restricted music access was prior to mp3 era. You HAD to go to a store or browse a paper catalog and buy mail order and wait for it to arrive. There was no low cost, quick way to duplicate music- quality cassette blanks cost too much, and copying music in realtime a hassle, with too many tweaks and settings to worry about both the source and deck, at least until the 90s when decks that auto set everything became commonplace and lower cost. So those of us who grew up prior to the 90s have no issues dealing with large physical media collections and playing media with focused listening

Do people question why people collect stamps, coins, physical video game media, Hot Wheels, etc? But for music, collecting physical media has several practical purposes vs a lot of other collecting hobbies. Ownership vs rental, appreciation of value depending on when you buy, sell and what you paid, enjoyment of the artwork, package, access when, how you want, lossless audio without paying premium streaming, loan/ borrow/trade, albums and tracks not available on streaming loan, having a backup if rips are lost, lossless rips and physical backups to blank media, etc

Hey Brendon. I really love your channel. I have kind of an odd question maybe for one of your next Q&A’s, but how hard is it to access your stacked boxes that are near the bottom of your columns when your looking for albums to listen to? I have kind of a similar set up and sometimes I’ll stay away from the boxes at the bottom for a while just because it can be a pain getting to them, but when I finally do I’ll be really surprised or forget what I had in there. Do you have a system to get to those that makes it easier, or do you just have to move everything off to get to them. Just wondering if you had the same problem I do. Anyways sorry for the long question. I hope it made sense. Thanks for the great videos.

Do you have ANY soundtracks in your library, such as the Miami Vice TV Series collaborations? I highly recommend the original Miami Vice Soundtrack (1985) and the MV Soundtrack Vol. 2 (1986.) BOTH soundtracks have songs you won't find on an original album. You will definitely love the AOR rocker When The Rain Comes Down by Andy Taylor (of Duran Duran fame) from the latter MV soundtrack. Andy shreds just like never before on this track. I have this soundtrack on BOTH vinyl and cd. I bought it on cd (online) just for that song alone, which cannot be streamed, apparently. There are several videos of it here at YT, though. And the track is NOT on Andy's 1987 solo debut LP "Thunder," either. MV also had a Vol. 3 soundtrack in 1988 (an import,) but it's super rare and hard to find. Most of the songs you can find on other albums or soundtracks, like Don Henley's Dirty Laundry. Do you have ANY of the OOP soundtracks from the 80's such as Iron Eagle (1986 Louis Gossett Jr. action film, which features several AOR/melodic rock gems, including the title track by King Kobra and Queen's Top 20 album rock radio hit and minor Hot 100 hit pop single One Vision,) Over The Top (1987 Sly Stallone action drama, which features Sammy Hagar's smash Top 5 album rock radio hit Winner Takes It All,) Youngblood (1986 Rob Lowe, Patrick Swayze and Keanu Reeves hockey-based action drama, which features Starship singer Mickey Thomas' hard to find minor album rock radio hit Stand In The Fire) or Best of the Best (1989 Martial Arts action film, which features Traffic drummer Jim Capaldi's solo Top 5 album rock radio hit Something So Strong, a forgotten AOR/melodic rock classic)? Andy Taylor's only Top 40 hit Take It Easy from the 1986 action drama American Anthem (starring U.S. Olympic gymnast Mitch Gaylord, in an acting role) is extremely hard to find, likewise. That soundtrack is OOP, too. I'm NOT even sure either that one or Youngblood is even on cd. Neither soundtrack sold many units.

I'm curious, do you try to listen to all your new acquisitions before you file them, or wait until the mood hits? I have ten days from day of purchase to return used stuff at my goto used cd seller, so I try to get to them quickly in case there is a problem with playback. New stuff from Amazon etc tends to wait unless I'm really excited to get to it. I have about 10 box sets (so 60 to 90 cds) I still need to get to.

Oh yes absolutely they sit out for weeks before moving to a new acquisitions box that stays the whole year. Then I first file away a box by year like 2021. Then after a couple years they will get filed into the artist location and specific box. But I like to really enjoy new albums.

I own just a few cd's. I'm more of the type of buying a cd if I really really love it ! After all this time, since I've always been so obsessed with music, I'm learning to enjoy music in a better way by accident! earbuds start to malfuction, my job doesn't allow me much to pay attention to music, the gym is always with the music loud, and so on.. So, I just make time to actually listen to the music, and I realize that I enjoy a certain specific style or genre. MY question would be ..how did you get to know so many artists ? not much about how do you listen to that many albums..
