Two little hinges and a partial frame was all that was left that hinted of a rear window in this shepherd's wagon. My hunch was, the back wall was where this window belonged, but it had to look 100 years old when finished. Thanks for coming along!
Spring for mugs, tee-shirts, sweatshirts and hoodies.

I have never thought you have done anything that wasn't done like I would do it until now lol . To my way of thinking the window should open out . In a light rain for example the window opened slightly would still offer ventilation and shed the rain . But to make matters worse when you trimmed the outside. I my homble option any rain that runs down the glass on the outside is going to make its way inside . At the very least the sill should be tapered towards the outside. And lastly with inside space being so limited the window opened out is a plus. Thanks for all the pleasure you give me watching your videos Donny

I suspect the window opens inwards 180° is so it can be held 'up' with a catch or toggle. The canvas wall may have had a water shedding flap over the outside of the window.

the tarp material is tacked to the outer frame giving a drip way off the glass unless the wind is blowing into the window, and a flap of tarp cover rolled up or free flowing just above said window
@truracer20
@truracer20 Месяц назад
He's rebuilding it the way it was originally built. Seeing as how the original is over 100 years old and was neglected for the last several decades, I'd say it held up well enough. The window opening in is a no brainer though, the user would fasten it open 180* with a toggle. It wouldn't be so easy to do that from the inside if the window opened out, plus the outer casing wouldn't allow for an outward opening window to open 180* unless it were flush mounted but then you couldn't use a drip molding AND the toggle would need to fasten through the canvas. None of those options would be ideal. If weather was that big of a concern a storm flap would have been sewn on the canvas.

Are you sure that long board was an upright? It looks like both ends were tapered. It looks to me that it would have been horizontal which would have made the window open sideways instead of up and down. The length of the remaining framework also looks like it would fit better down to the tailgate boards in that orientation. Of coarse it's too late now,

A few years ago, I came for the blacksmithing but stayed for the wheel & wainwrighting. I continue to be fascinated and mesmerized by your work. While most of your skill sets are beyond anything I will ever master, they are nonetheless applicable to some of the minor projects which I embark on, albeit at a skill level orders of magnitude less than yours! The main thing I want to comment on is how much I have learned to appreciate about the job of the wainwright and the wheelwright. Like a lot of people in my cohort, I grew up on western movies ("dusters" as my late father used to call them). What I recall about most of these movies was that there were a lot of "disposables" in the storylines; the largest disposable being the men in the black hats (figuratively speaking) getting shot off their horses, balconies and rooftops. While I have never compiled a body count, it was high. The other disposable in these movies was the wagons. Damn near every western movie I have ever watched depicts the destruction of wagons of all shapes and sizes. Wagons blown up with dynamite, going over a cliff, flipping over, being shot to pieces with gatling guns, and otherwise being rendered into matchsticks in the blink of a eye. When strictly based on western movies, one cannot help but infer that wagons were cheap, shoddy, flimsy contraptions that required a minimum of effort to construct. Watching your videos has opened my eyes and my mind to just how complex these machines were and how much skill was involved in the building, repairing and maintaining of them. I have gained an appreciation for not only the wagons, but the wainwrights and wheelwrights who made them. Turns out there is far more to these machines that what one sees in the movies. Add to that, the immense amount of labour that you put into the repairs and rebuilding; and that you have at your disposal, modern power tools that were not available to the wainwrights and wheelwrights of bygone days. I cannot imagine the time and effort that these men had to expend in the practice of their craft before power tools. I cannot help but have an immense amount of admiration for both you and your predecessors. I think we all owe you a debt of gratitude for sharing your knowledge with us. I do hope that you have a protege lined up to take up the reins (no pun intended), when you decide to retire. Thank you Mr. Engels.

I wonder if the window size was to meet a standard glass pane size. Also usually you don't put a bottom piece of trim on a window as it directs the water in side which in this case into the bed. If anything it would get a draft board along the bottom inside edge of the window and the sill board would be beveled.
