Building and restoring horse drawn vehicles all bring unique challenges. This one was to preserve the rusty irons and make it look 100 years old. Reconstructing with old wood and irons is more difficult than using new materials, but that's what the owner desired. It's been quite the project. Thanks for coming along!
Spring for mugs, tee-shirts, sweatshirts and hoodies.

Regarding the door latch: you did it exactly how I would have done it - but I thought YOU would just rebend the latch so it would fit flush on the door. Well within your wheel house. However; once it was done I think it looks better with the wood spacer. Go figure. :^)

In the latter part of the 1960s, I was working in Southern Utah. I became friends with the local game warden and would help him when he needed assistance in controlling wild life that was damaging the crops. On one occasion we traveled South and met up with a rancher that thought his alfalfa crop was being damaged by to many deer on his land. We arrived about an hour before dark. While waiting for sunset we enjoyed a cup of coffee in his sheep wagon just like the one your are working on. The crop damage turned out to be caused buy a large number of jack rabbits eating the alfalfa. The balance of nature had been upset when the mountain lions had been killed off, thus letting the rabbit population to grow in checked. I enjoy all of your videos and I am amazed with your vast knowledge and skills. Thanks for what you do.

That mystery iron. Looks like a drop gate hinge. I might be mistaken and thinking of the chuck wagon or another wagon you did. But I think I recall you saying these were sometimes built off of grain or farm wagon bodies? If so that would explain the need for a drop gate.

Hi Dave, and Diane, I wonder how many times the old Shepard had to go outside to grab something from the box before they decided to make an interior access door for it. Maybe the owner brought stuff over for you to camp out in it to give it a test. It sounds like fun to me. You could test out the stove too, and get some coffee brewing. Haven't watched the whole episode yet, but those 'trinkets' rang a bell. A loud one. The 'got yule' banner, (it's Norwegian, or maybe Swedish), translates as 'Good Christmas'. The blanket patterns and the prancing/rampant reindeer are typical in the Scandinavian culture. It appears to me that he is re-establishing the Scandinavian ancestry of the wagon's former owner.

I love the use of c-clamps and clamps you have to keep material in place until you secure them permanently, you must have a gazillion clamps in your shop for every purpose! To see that heap of junk turn into an amazing sheep wagon is the artisans work of art and skill! Great job Dave! Maybe those irons at the back of the wagon were meant to secure a through rod to give it lateral stability? I suppose one guess is as good as any? Dang, I would love to spend a day at your shop watching a master wainwright/wheelwright at work! My most recent visit to Montana was to the Little Bighorn battlefield site. My wife and I were disappointed that the Seventh Cavalry were disparaged by our “woke” park service guide. My great grandfather passed away in Anaconda working at the mine, having worked as a cook the last few years before he passed away. I love the rich history of our country, so much of those bygone days is being pushed out of memory and knowledge, your restoration of these important artifacts keeps the past alive in our hearts and minds.
