I saw Within Temptation live back in 2018 and Sharon was phenomenal. She actually sounds better than she was years ago. In fact the whole band put on a great show ✊
The most attractive thing about Within Temptation to me is how they manage to sound like that without being any presumptuous... I mean, in my opinion, most of the so-called symphonic metal bands have this atitude like "we are big"... sometimes those bands can be so full of themselves.. Within Temptation has a totally different atitude.. They're so real, so true, so vulnerable.. They jam, they have fun and all they want us to do is to join them... and they sound like a soundtrack to life!
Within Temptation is the band that got me into symphonic metal. The tone and pitch Sistah is referring to is essentially Sharon’s “whistle” or “flute” pitch, as I’ve heard some refer to it, where her voice just cuts through the air and the music. A great song where you can easily see this is “The Cross” on the same album: it seems like there is almost a flute playing in the beginning, but it’s actually her voice making that whistle/flute-like sound. On another note, Wolf mentioned that the first 2 albums are masterpieces, and while the next 2 aren’t the same, the 3rd album is full of wonderful Gothic ballads all the same (in fact, it’s what got me into the band in the first place). The 4th album, which this song is on, is actually my favorite album, because I feel like the orchestral background and the new sound mix into something truly unique. In my opinion, the 4th album is unlike any of their other material because it is the transition, and thus, it really represents the band’s journey into something completely their own. Loved the reaction, and I’m hoping to see more WT soon!
That concert was already 12 years ago!? I went with a friend and we were standing just a few rows from the stage. Amazing magical concert, thank you for featuring it!
Monscent, actually no, Sharon didn't get to her full potential in this concert. I heard her sing live so many times that I recognise that she was keeping it together as best as she could. But it was not the best of circumstances for her to sing in the first place. She still sounds excellent, but not as grand as she could have. And for some, who might get the impression that this is the peak of what Sharon is capable of, then this is a wrong impression. The sickness is not an excuse, rather a recognition of how well she did despite the odds, and also to point to other performances and not to judge Sharon's voice based on this concert alone.
I love your content, Sistah and Wolf! I listen to Within Temptation for almost 20 years now. Favourite band of all times (together with Rammstein, which is the other half of me - reference intended). Same as Wolf I discovered Within Temptation and Nightwish around the same time. First I discovered Within Temptation in spring 2002 on Dutch TV with Mother Earth and experiencing them live in summer of the same year, coming back from the festival as a fan head over heels. In fall a classmate introduced me to Nightwish and Lacuna Coil. And also, same as Wolf, I lost track of Nightwish after Once and the End of an Era tour. Eva stuck with me for a while and only Ghost Love Score with Floor brought me back to Nightwish.
I also found them at the same time as Nightwish back in 08. Sharon to me is my favorite singer. Her voice is not only angelic but from another plane of existence.
That album was in my alarm clock every morning when I was 15 years old xD All those mornings where I would not feel like waking up because I was listening to the music xD
Within Temptation got me into symphonic metal, for which I am eternally grateful. Without them I would probably not have found Floor, who led me to my favourite band Epica. Within Temptation holds second place on my list.
Yay!!! I've been hoping you guys would react to something from the Black Symphony show for ages! And I agree with Wolf- Sharon's voice has gotten way stronger over the years. She was a powerhouse on the album The Unforgiving.
The Heart of Everything was the first album I ever heard by Within Temptation, my freshman year in highschool, and this was my favorite song on that album. It has remained a favorite ever since, and I've been more or less obsessed with symphonic rock, and WT in particular ever since. I hold the opinion that Sharon is actually a Nephilim or Fae. She's so beautiful in every aspect.
Finally someone is doing Within Temptation!! I really don't know why but I'm just not a huge nightwish fan. But I love Within Temptation. They never get recognized.

I have been waiting for more people to react to this song, because it isn't just about the message of the song -- about forgiving yourself, and finding redemption -- but about the fact that there is _a live orchestra_ playing in this concert, something I have always wanted to see bands like Nightwish put together: A concert that puts the "symphonic" in "symphonic metal." Black Symphony in 2008 is one of those concerts that makes me happy that two of my music loves gets melded together: Classic, symphonic music and metal. Yes, definitely worth noting that Sharon was quite sick at the time of this show. From memory, I think she'd lost her voice entirely a day or two before and they were praying it would come back in time. It did, but Sharon thought it gave her a bit of a different sound for this show. True professional. Great vid, guys! Love me some Within Temptation! ♥️

I discovered Nightwish and Within Temptation at the same time too. I hit thumbs up on evanescence on Pandora and it played these two bands along with a bunch of other symphonic rock and metal. I’ve been hooked ever since.

I first listened to Evanescence and went looking for more like them and did run across Within Temptation first then Nightwish after. I always took it that Sharon sings as if her voice is a whisper on the wind. So light like a feather.
I believe one of the first songs I heard of theirs was Faster from a movie but when I went looking I found the song Frozen. Both are quite ranged from each other for Within Temptation and really reminded me the range of Evanescence and so many songs most never hear and the loss of depth of their work. I hope everyone will flood Sistah with all the best of Within Temptation. There is a ton of stuff to cover.

Silent I found them the same way. Evanescence first and then I found Within Temptation through the song Pale and then finally Nightwish through Nemo around 2007. ^^
Within Temptation was the first concert I went to, a really small venue back then, it was amazing and definitely paved my way into metal. Nice to see them getting some love from you too :D
My first contact with Within Temptation was during my college days, back in 2009, when a friend borrowed me the Black Symphony dvd. Was pretty impressed by their performances, especifically with Sharon's duet in "The Other Half of Me" (unfortunately, I forgot the name of the singer who performed with her). As for their music, I have to say I got more attracted by their late stuff than the earlier albums, even with "Mother Earth" and cited "The Other Half of Me" being some of my favorites by them. Hope you can react to some more WT, they have a lot of great songs to hear. And of course, I'm waiting for that Amorphis reaction (come on, guys from Patreon, help me out on this one).
One of my favorite songs ever. I love the lyrics, clearly inspired by the Da Vinci Code. I love the way the song talks about doubting what we believe, what we've been told for centuries, justifying all the horrible things Church has done in the name of God. Amazing! Within Temptation was part of my teenages along with Nightwish, Tristania, After Forever, etc. I would love to see you react to Therion - Son of The Staves of Time. Or maybe Falling Stones. I love so much them playing and singing live. Awesome band with great vocalists.
I love Within Temptation's early stuff too, especially Mother Earth, but I'm not so much into their newer stuff, definitely more mainstream to my ears. I rank Epica and good old After forever higher up there with Nightwish.
I've seen WT so many times live (at least 20) and they never failed to amaze me. Ice Queen was always a killer ending to the concert, while Deceiver of Fools got my blood pumping the hardest. Just reminiscing about it makes me feel kinda sad, those were some of the best times of my life. The same with Epica, After Forever, Delain and ReVamp, I was very lucky to be in the golden times of symphonic metal and being able to see them at least a few times a year.

Wolf, now you have to let her hear Enter (the song). Still one of their best songs and a great song to start an album with. It was also my introduction to the band when their cd came out. I loved that album, and saw them live that tour back in '97. Mother Earth got the label fairy metal here in The Netherlands.
I am brand new to listening/watching WT. Today, I watched the concert from 'Resurrection Fest' and I was really blown off my sofa. Every song was wonderful, the arrangements, the symphony orchestra. HOWEVER, has Sharon changed that much from the video you reacted here vs. the Resurrection Fest performance? She sounds like a totally different vocalist!! Please fill me in (newbie here). Thanks

I love your reaction :) The Truth Beneath the Rose is good choice I think and Within Temptation is always better live. I saw them live 3 times and those were the best shows I ever been to. Its not just great music, outstanding, angelic voice but also the interaction between the band and the crowd. Sharon have the ability to make everyone feel special and appreciated, it's just unbelievable experience. She is very humble and lovely in person, hope to see Within Temptation again next year :)

My first WT show was in Munich. They drew the worst time slot playing the same time as Metallica. Only about 100 people in huge arena. They came out like pros and killed it in a nearly empty arena.
YES. It is beyond my dreams that someone should request one of my own favorite WITHIN TEMPTATION songs. Somehow it just "speaks" to me, probably the vocal delivery has the special something, in its wonderfully emotional legato lines. Even though they have numerous other beautiful melodic songs, and some hard-hitting hammers, none more so than the mentioned "Ice Queen" (THAT RIFF! In its time, it even broke into MTV [I think... might have been another of the "big" channels though], without being mainstream - says something for WT's accessibility plus prowess!). I have a soft spot in my heart for WT, even though the Dutch Symphonic scene is bursting at the seams with wonderful and original artists. For example, the "old" AYREON.... the man notorious for better utilizing the pleiade of most awe-inspiring Metal and rock voices than their own bands. :)) Or the "young" EX LIBRIS: a rising Prog Symph group, led by an operatic vocalist with chops and charm to spare, that may soon rule them all. One thing for sure. Sharon den Adel's timbre is and remains probably unique in all of rock, you can instantly say "It's her!" by the end of first phrase. As such, I am always eager to listen to more from her. Too bad the whole band's offerings have moved increasingly away from the "pixie dust" material that created the original aura of WT, into some modern-day themes, comics and such. Music has followed suit to where I think Sharon does not actually have enough material to shine. But hey there are folks who make similar statements about modern NIGHTWISH, or really any band that has simultaneously branched out and grown (relatively) big. So I will not pretend to know better than the artists. :)) You two stay strong, stay safe, and stay sweet! :)))

Not sure if you've heard the news, but Ennio Morricone passed away two days ago in Rome at the age of 91. He was one of the most talented movie composers of all time along with Zimmer, Vangelis and John Williams. I don't even know if you're into this kind of music, but in case you are a reaction in his honor would be much appreciated. Nice to see someone doing Within Temptation reactions. Excellently done by the way. Like you Wolfkain, Within temptation, for me, are only second to Nightwish. Again, same as you I discovered both at roughly the same time (around 15 years ago when my daughter you was 16 at the time brought their music into the house). Funny enough I believe it was the album, The Heart of Everything, that I heard first and this is one of my favorite songs of theirs which happened to be off that album. That album sounds like it was written to be played on stage with a full orchestra and voice choir. Needless to say I fell in love with both Within Temptation and Nightwish but at that time I felt Within Temptation had the edge. Other way round now though for me. I can't believe that I seriously thought about getting tickets for this very show but decided not to because of having to get flights and hotel sorted (a lot of expense and messing around). Didn't realize at the time it would be with the Metropole Orchestra. If I had I think I would have taken the trouble to get tickets and whatever else needed to get us there. However I have managed to see them a number of times since when the cam to London. Both at the Brixton Academy and at Wembley arena. Stay safe guys.

Are you now there is another brand new singer added to this is genre as well, and she is also a fan of Sharon Den Adel oh, and has done numerous covers of her. She is the brand new singer for the band Delain, which is Sharon's brother-in-law's band. Her name is Diana Leah, and she seems with a pristine, dreamy, warm tone... another lovable sound for us to hear
Wolfkain & Sistah, I just gotten an idea for a mega tour. Have Within Temptation tour with Nightwish because they are within same genre of Metal: Symphonic Metal with two ladies with awesome voices. I think Floor knows them because they are from Netherlands too.
Hi, love the way Wolf tell about the story of Sharon and the band. But Wolf do know about Sharon’s private project “My Indigo”? That’s a great project what results in a beautiful record. This kind of concerts is what I missed from Nightwish, real orchestra and choir together with the band. I think WT introduced the fireworks in concerts as well. Btw the fireworks where inside the theater.

Sharon uses a head voice for these types of vocals. You should have Sistah check out some of their new stuff like the song "Faster" from the Forgiven CD. It is a music video.Also are you guys familiar with their epic 15th anniversary concert, Elements? It is amazing with full orchestra. I especially love the song "Stairway to the Skies".

Hello you were right about the interpretations of the song. I want u to know I am the original singer of within temptation I wrote all the songs and I was the singer in most the videos from the beginning. My uncle paid for me to sing it was for my therapy and I tried to win the contest in Europe from Germany to Russia. I did this because I was getting cancer surgeries in Europe and I didn't realize I was singing in a band or concerts I had thought it wasn't going to happen but it surprisingly went amazing. I got to write out my feelings and beliefs n experiences. That helped me to get thru my surgeries n feelings. I was taking medications that was like genetically modifying my face n body to looks different that's also y I looked different alot if u seen other videos u would understand but I'm not Sharon but that's the fake name I made and so u know Sharon now is still not her real name either. It's a stage name. And Sharon now voice is deeper mine is higher. And I was sick too so it was healing n exercise for me while I was healing during my treatments. I actually gained alot more weight now and look like more my self just over weight because I'm not able to be healthy on my own but soon I'm moving away w my fiance n going to live healthier. I might try to sing for fun but not for real but I wish to sell my songs I wrote and I think it's bullshit if that new girl should get all my money for taking credit when she's not as good as me or writes her own songs. Ok thanks.

I cant seem to find any reviews by you guys of Queensryche, unfortunately their best album is Operation Mindcrime, wich is a concept album, probably one of the best there is. Would be such a journey to watch you guys react to it. Will probably make the sistah cry more then once. Produced in -88 still just as actual today, proffesional musicians all over, and it sounds like it :D
You should react to "Somewhere" by Within Temptation- and have it be the live performance. It's one of the most beautiful things I think I've ever heard, and I prefer it over the studio version!
I discovered Nightwish and WT together as well back in 2003. First song I heard was Gatekeeper and was hooked. To me The Heart of Everything ablum was WT last great album. I saw them live in 2007 in support of this album and show was amazing. While I still enjoy them today their new stuff is to mainstream and I get bored after a couple songs. I can listen to their old stuff all day though.
I always love your lyrical analysis of songs, that's why it would have been great if you had included them into this video as well, especially because the lyrics of this song are quite interesting and I think you would have liked the song even more. I strongly recommend checking out "The Promise" (the live version on Black Symphony or Elements Concert) "Our Solemn Hour" live or "Enter" (live 2002)
