The Elfquest mass market books seemed to be one of the few comic books that a lot of libraries stocked in the 80s and 90s. I never cared for them but they really had some serious penetration into non-comic shop venues.

Always a fun time. Bill Black's AC started as Paragon Publications; they were really fanzines, and he shows up in some of those Bill Schelly books. In spite of that letter, Black was not above the exploitation of women, but it was a nostalgic kind of exploitation, tied up with Golden Age characters like Phantom Lady. They were on board for using bondage and giantesses to sell comics. Back when I was sending art out in response to Buyer's Guide classifieds, I got this odd response from a college professor who wanted drawings of a Fiction House character named Senorita Rio, specifically soaking wet so you could see her period underwear, girdle and other equipment. He sent a bound book of examples of what he liked, images from the comics and his own diagrams of what was required to get his cash. I never took the job, but some time later Bill Black was selling a portfolio of Senorita Rio drawings titled "Drenched Damsels". So he must've seen an opportunity to get paid twice for taking on the challenge that was too weird for amateurs like me. About Bisley, he paints pretty big, at least in this video series: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-SpGzhEMCXQg.html

At age eight, I loaned out Ed the Happy Clown from my local library. Holy shit. My siblings and I giggled out of nervousness, but that series really opened my eyes to what comics actually are and could be. Loved that the despair on the page satisfied the deep emotions I was trying to work through; sure, Charlie Brown was my best printed pal, but that Chester Brown stuff is deep.

Loved and STILL LOVE Chester Brown. He's probably my favorite cartoonist. Just not enough new work by him in the past decade.

There's a Slaine panel on RU-vid that Bisley & Fabry were a part of that has some interesting and funny stories about their "rivalry".

I know Simon Bisley was doing alot of Heavy metal and Judge Dredd magazine in the mid to late 90's. Stuff with Danzig (Verotika) and he did quite a bit of artwork for the BBC show Spaced.

Bisley mainly did some Judge Dredd strips in the early 90s for Rock Power magazine. And the Spaced stuff was actually Jim Murray and another guy. I used to think it was Bisley too. The time period between Lobos Back and this interview he was probably working on Melting Pot and Death Dealer

When I think of the Savage Dragon letters pages, I think of Peter David and Olav Beemer.

The Legend imprint was huge for my dreams of being a comic creator. Image? Not so much. Haha. :)

I love that cover! I learned about independent comics in 1990 and that made me want to make comic books instead of news paper comic strips.

Laughed my ass off at the Barry Blair comment. I'm currently cleaning up a huge archive of his elf books to get them up on comixology and some of it is, uh, questionable...? It's amazing what cartoonists were getting away with in the pre-internet era.

Also, I'm constantly floored by both of you guys' wealth of knowledge. Holy hell, you know your stuff!

Avengers 144 is about a 100 dollar comic now. Should've gotten it while it was good and cheap.

With regards to the nipples on the Camaro, the nipples came in a separate bag so it was up to you if you wanted them or not. Simon Bisley mentioned it in an interview
