Thank you for the kind words. Yes the whole combination of front, rear and master cylinder gives you some real reassurance that your going to able to stop. I did the ZJ rear disc on my. The only thing I wish I had done was to get the rotors and pads from ATL Auto Sports. I would have gotten slotted an drilled zinc coated with pads for less then I paid at Autozone for standard rotors.

I'm doing this to my 93 XJ. One of the upgrades the precious owner didn't do. XJ sits on 37's with a 6inch lift. Just about everything upgraded besides the front. The XJ didn't run and drive when the last owner had it. The drive line was rubbing making it seem like the transfer case. Overall I've been looking for a decent upgrade to my brakes and this is it. I can't wait to do it.

Beautiful work. The 35" tires on my XJ are a little tougher to slow down than I'd like and I'd love to do something like this. I'll need to invest a bit more in my shop before though. I'm thinking a lot of the improvement in steering you felt was probably from your sloppy lower ball joints. I just replaced mine and it made a world of difference in handling.

I am about to start a makeover on the front end of my 96 ZJ. Unlike the video I want to get all new Bearing hubs with a 5x5 lug pattern for the 17" wheels i have. No lug adapters or wheel spacers desired. That leads me to WJ hubs which come with a 5x5 lug setup, hence all WJ parts with no re-drilling the rotors for 5x4.5. OK so here's the question. Will there be any fitment issues with the WJ hub going on to the outer axle spline with enough length to nut and cotter this all together on the final step of the knuckle install? Also, if there is some reason that this all WJ setup would need the JKS spacer and the Caliper spacers, let me know and i'll get them and get going. Great video, great advice... thanks for taking the time with this question.

Hello Martin I'm doing this steering upgrade on my 97 Orvis. My question is I bought a complete WJ donor rear I also bought a set of 17" WJ rims. I was wondering if I could use the WJ unit bearings This would save me having to buy the wheel adapter to go from the ZJ bolt pattern to the WJ bolt patteren (on the new rims)and also eliminate having the 1/4" spacer welded in. Double savings!!!! What do you think would this work? I'm actually installing this upgrade on a Dana 30 High Pinion out of a 90's XJ then installing the HP Rear in my 97 ZJ. Thanks

Martin, thanks again for all your hard work and attention to detail. I saw a video for Rusty's where they upgrade the steering on a commanche. I'm sure you've seen it. My question is whether you think the Rusty's track bar bracket would work with this setup? The Rusty's bracket sits atop the axle. I suppose it changes the length/angle of the track bar, but it looks close. Also, the steering links themselves look pretty easy to fabricate, no? Thanks again, well done.

@martinbuilt
@martinbuilt 5 лет назад
Matter of fact just over this past weekend I replaced the tire rod from Iron Rock that I have been running for years with the Ruff stuff tie rod with 1 ton Chevy offset tie rod ends and I went over the knuckle. As far as a drag link goes you could either make your own using tie rod ends or heim's joints. But the one thing unique about the Iron Rock drag link it had that bend in it to where I could install the track bar bracket where I wanted to keep the drag link and track bar at the same length and at parallel angles. This eliminating any bump steer. Ruff stuff also has some kits available that would work. Of course welding will be required.

If you want faster,easier steering. Bolt on a steering box from a 96 -03 S-10 pickup. It's the same exact box as an XJ or ZJ,it's just a faster steering ratio. Bolts right on,no modifications necessary. While you're at it,might as well bolt on a steering box stabilizer. That's the main reason XJ & ZJ steering boxes leak from the pitman arm shaft seal. They flex or the bearing gets loose because of the flex then it leaks. Steering box stabilizer really helps. Thanks for the video. Did you have to clearance the calipers,so the rims didn't sctape?

@martinbuilt 9 лет назад
Arien Mcclure I 've got a hard time believing that the 00-01 bearing hubs don't need the spacer. The only thing that I can see different between the 97-99 hub and the 00-01 is the later has longer wheel studs. Most people that are saying you don't need the spacer are getting this info from a forum. Forums are great places to get the info but not always correct. As I said in the video about the lower ball joint needs to be replaced with ones from a WJ but, if you read on some forums you'll find people that have used the stock lowers. I can guarantee that is not correct. To those people that are saying that the 00-01 need no spacer are you speaking form experience or something you read.

Paul Sheer looks like the Grand Cherokee knuckle is shallower than the xj part, so the driveshaft would be too long, but you can't shorten the driveshaft because the universal joint has to be in the same place.

would it be possible to run that iron rock kit with out modification on the bottom knuckle and not utilize the top knuckle for the drag link? i know its not ideal like the cross over these knuckles alow for, but i would think that would avoid a lot of hassle relocating the track bar and keep the geometry the same.

You can but I don't recommend it. Because the bearing hub assembly sets into the knuckle but with the spacer it does not and you're putting the entire load on the three bolts that hold the bearing hub assembly in

I know this is an older video, but could you not run the draglink under instead of on top to match the stock angle of the trackbar?
@martinbuilt
@martinbuilt 4 года назад
yeah you can do that as long as there is no wheel interferes

Nice video Martin, I checked it out a couple of years back but now I'm getting around to this upgrade. Question: can you keep your existing rotors without the larger rotors etc. I just put premium brakes on it just want the crossover steering
@martinbuilt
@martinbuilt 3 года назад
no because those knuckles will only accept the dual piston calipers. Believe me you what those bigger rotors, the best brakes I've ever had on any 4x4.

Thanks for all the great videos over the years Martin! I really appreciate all the effort you put into them, they are certainly my favorite XJ videos. Quick question I'd be grateful if you could answer for me, I have recently done the WJ knuckle swap and 1 ton GM TRE cross over OTK steering. I noticed on the passenger side you have mounted the sway bar quick disco pin higher than the drivers side and shortened the link. I need to do the same in order to clear my steering. Is there any negative effects you have noticed in having unequal length sway bar end links with typical on road behavior? Much appreciated in advance! Thanks.
@martinbuilt
@martinbuilt 4 года назад
Thank you I appreciate the kind words, I know I have never noticed any adverse behavior from the unequal length sway bar links. I do wish I had made a template for the track bar mount that I made.

@@martinbuilt That's great news! It's a very specific problem and hard to find opinions on. I used the Artec industries raised track bar mount. Worked out great. No bump steer or wobble. Jeep wanders a bit though at highway speeds. Hoping the sway bar solves that rolling side to side and wandering. Thanks again!

Hi Martin, I hve been recently (w/ball joints) people are not using xj uppers & wj lowers. What I've been seeing/reading (forums) is JK ball joints. Can U confirm this? Is this false. I ask because there beefy-er. Thank U, jasonC

Do you know what the difference is between the dana 30's on xj/zj's to the wj one's? Kinda seems easier to swap axles and just weld on the brackets

Martinbuilt: is your steering box a stock one, also do you have a brace across to the other side frame rail ?
@martinbuilt
@martinbuilt Год назад
The steering Box is a 4 bolt that came out of a 78 Cadillac limousine. Here is the video that I did on the steering Box and reinforcing the frame. Thank you for watching. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-POP9p8c7-FU.html

Does the bilstein shocks help reduce the effects of small bumps in the road from feeling like they were larger bumps? Thanks in advance.
@martinbuilt

Randy Anderson Well what I can tell you is I'm very happy with these shocks. I wish they would make them in stock length cuz I would have definitely bought them for my WJ. My XJ has a smoother ride then my WJ does.

2 questions. Do you really have to weld the spacer on and does the brake pedal actually have a good feel to it or still like a block of wood like a stock xj?
@martinbuilt
@martinbuilt 10 лет назад
I highly recommend that you weld on the spacer. There are only 3 bolts that hold on the entire front wheel assembly. By not welding the spacer on you would only have around 1/8" of the bearing assembly setting into the knuckle, not very much support. I think the brakes feel great. If I want I have no problem locking up the 35" tires.

Hey, so do you know if that same brake upgrade can be applied to a 1991 wrangler. It has a Dana 30 upfront just like a XJ. Let me know what you think?

yes it can. it's the exact same axle.

That’s great and all but how much better is that setup over factory? And how much do you have into it vs putting that money in a Dana 44 or bigger
@martinbuilt
@martinbuilt 4 года назад
Out of all the mods I've ever done to my XJ this is got to be on the top five on my list.. the breaking alone that I've achieved with these rotors and calipers is well worth it. Before I couldn't even come close to locking up any of the tires, now with the combination of the ZJ disc brakes in the rear and the Durango master cylinder I can easily lock up all four and I'm running 35 in tires. I believe I spent around $400 and that was mine most of the stuff new. I could have done it for one third of the cost if I would have used all junkyard parts.

if you use the later model unit bearings (basically from a low pinion 30) you dont need the caliper bracket spacers.
@nickjames6241
@nickjames6241 4 года назад
why is that
@SarahSmith-hd8kd
@SarahSmith-hd8kd 4 года назад
@@nickjames6241 cause they are the same I think as like the 06 TJ rubicon model hubs in the way of being slightly different in build specs don't know why that is but it just is. Also if you use the Rubicon ones they have longer lugs to them just in case you are gunna run spacers or something to make 15" wheels work note you can run 15" wheels if they are the right offset and are thinner steelie wheels without grinding the top of the caliper. I don't recommend spacers personally you are not putting proper load on the hub at that point and you will probably get pre mature ware out of said hubs if you run any spacers that's how I see it and understand it all to be.

is the spacer completely necessary that you welded on the knuckle? i haven't heard mention of it in this conversion till this video. Also can i use my origional rotors on this upgrade?
@martinbuilt
@martinbuilt 2 года назад
Yes the spacer is totally necessary without it as you turn your steering wheel the axle shaft will move in-and-out of the axle tube. The spacer recorrects the alignment of the axle shaft and prevents the axle shaft from moving in-and-out of the tube.
