I swapped my 199 AG FDCM with a used Non-Updated 199AH FDCM that was also from a 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited 5.7L with Quadra-Drive II.
As the video shows with no cuts or edits (so sorry for having to put the camera down) that this does solve our 4LO issue. Now I have a roll away issue but I have always used the parking brake and I don't have remote start.
However we are still loosing because as the word gets out about this issue our Jeeps loose value. I was considering a new Dodge Ram 1500 with the eco-Diesel but instead I started to look at F150's with the Eco-Boost. Sorry Chrysler you let me down and others down and this vehicle is hardly "Trail rated" with the N23 recall done.
It's not the Actuator, It's not the FDCM, it's not the transfer case. It's YOUR software update. 250,000 JGC's sold and what a small handful had roll away issues because the people did not take due care and use parking brakes like they should have!!! I'm not sure how such a small number equals a "safety hazard or concern" to even issue a RECALL.
The more I think about it, Chrysler took the cheap route, the cheap fix and knew that 4LO would be affected and they know most would not even realize this. A more pressing concern I have is I don't believe my TCS works properly with the N23 recall done, which is a much bigger safety issue. Also 4LO to me is a HUGE safety issue because I live in a State where mountain trails are impassable without 4LO. I bought my Jeep Grand Cherokee as a toy, as a way to explore the back country with my wife and child. I am thankful I found out my 4LO does not work before getting in a serious predicament.
Imagine being way out int he backcountry. The trail goes down hill some very rough terrain and one doe snot NEED 4LO yet to go down. So they get down and then it sorta smooths out and they travel for a bit and come to an uphill that you need 4LO. You go to put it into 4LO and you get that message 'Service 4WD System'. Now you are stuck you need it to continue on, and you need it to get back out.
You have your wife, and 2 year old with you. You are unable to walk out due to the 2 year old's capabilities.
So your options:
1) Stay and hope someone comes
2) Leave wife & child and hike out to get help
Depending on the time of the year hiking out might not be an option due to very cold temperatures at night even if the day is okay.
This vehicle was "Trail Rated", I have a feeling any loyalty you had from people will be gone and they will be looking at other Manufactures.
If this was an underlying issue that your update brought about as you claimed then unknown to me due to poor manufacturing/design that is not the fault of myself then you ripped me off when I purchased this 2WD vehicle as I paid probably $5,000 to $8,000 too much.

Also, thanks for the video. It really helps me. I'll be ordering my pre-N23 from a jeep brokers yard after Chrysler explain to me how this isn't thier problem (or they know nothing about it)

This might sound far fetched: "You have your wife, and 2 year old with you. You are unable to walk out due to the 2 year old's capabilities." But it happened to me. (or at least thats how I felt at the time!) After N23 recall, my Wife and I with our 1 year old was driving in the UK on holiday looking for somewhere to eat in the evening. We hit really bad weather and ended up off the main road on a muddy trail (wondering why I keep trusting the satnav too! :) . I realised it wasnt a good situation as I could feel the car starting to slip towards a drop. I needed to 3-point-turn to get back onto the main road. There was no way I was going to try and reverse back through the trail. The only way to turn around was to head up a muddy bank on the opposite side of the drop. To make sure the car would make it (and not end up going down the drop) I tried dropping it into 4Low and got this service warning light. Thankfully 4-Hi was able to cope with the mud and we got out. I wasn't best pleased to know that 4Low would have worked fine without N23. Inb4 "you shouldnt use 4Low in mud!" :)

Hi there! I think you did a deep analysis of the subject. So, your recommendation is to do nothing if I never did the N23? nor P73? I bought a Jeep WK 2008 recently and saw on Mopar web that I have those recalls pendent and the P57 also. I want to do the last one since one of my keys is not in good shape, but I am afraid that the reseller do all the recalls giving me problems that I do not have today. Thanks!!

It seems my fuse pull video gets a lot of hits still, so I wonder how FIXED any updated flash really is. Not sure what to tell you if you need a new key. You could buy a OBDII lock so the dealer can not just plug in without you there, and you could say you need to watch them and don't want any updates. I'm not sure how that will go over with them though.
@B474KO
@B474KO 6 лет назад
Meeker Extreme Thanks for your answer! I have one key without any problems so I think I am gonna pass the recalls until something really happens with my WK. Just in case!!

I have this issue on a 3.0 CRD and mine has NOT been flashed, my problem occurs typically when the engine has been shut off then back on within a few minutes, if it's left a while (an hour or so) it goes back to normal. My actuator, eDiffs and 4LOW work perfectly otherwise. Any suggestions?

So you had an appointment at the dealer for a new actuator? Was jeep paying for it? Did you then put the fdcm in and it worked fine now?
@Meekerextreme
@Meekerextreme 10 лет назад
I should check it but yeah Jeep paid 100% for the new actuator and diagnostic fee. No I have not put in the un-flashed FDCM because well the last I check 4WD worked...but as I said I should check it. I do carry the FDCM around with the wrench and socket should I need to remove the seat but honestly I don't use the vehicle but once a week if that.

I recently bought an 05 WK with Hemi, the dash lit up, took to the dealer they said the FDCM would need to be replaced. I had them order one, its been 3 weeks and the service tech just told me he will admit, he does not expect one to come in. Is there something I should be looking for with a used or refurbed unit?

Get one that matches the spec on your vehicle. I ran the WIN on the Jeep site, no clue where that was now (been so long) but it will say if it's been updated. A lot of Junk yards didn't like handing out the VIN...I called around and found one in North Carolina. Also by running the VIN you find out the spec of the donor vehicle because as I said you want one that is a close match, in my case it was identical down to having the TV's int he headrest.

@Meekerextreme 10 лет назад
All you need to do is take the rear seat out and look at the FDCM. What numbers do you have? Then go on www.car-part.com and look it up. Select: Chassis Control Computer (Not Engine) Then select one of the Transfer Case options on the next screen *From my understanding a letter after the one you have will work, some report a letter right before will work. For Example: Mine was AG AH works as H comes after G now if I would have been AE a good chance it might not of worked. Go down the list on car-parts and call places. Some call it a Transfer Case Computer and I found no one that knew what FDCM is. Most can not look up the stock number on car-parts (I'm not sure why). Also a lot of people are DUMB they don't realize a 2005 to 2010 is okay so ASK if they have other years there besides your years. Also remember Commanders were also affected (I'm not sure on the year range with those). Ask for the VIN so you can run it on the recall list www.moparownerconnect.com/oc/US/en-us/sub/Pages/OwnersLogin.aspx These places that say will call you back, will never do so if they don't have a number match. So continue down the list on car-parts and call and YOU recall the others to check. When I recalled the salvage places I got the "Oh sorry the numbers did not match". so don't feel bad for continually calling other places first one to say they got it will get the sale. it seems $15 was the standard shipping charge I got. As for emailing any of them I emailed a bunch the first night i decided to get a FDCM and I never did get back any emails. I'm guessing they don't bother with emails too much. Maybe that meant no match or they had no clue what an FDCM is. Good luck because I called maybe 30 places before finding one and the car-parts listing was vague...so maybe call the vague ones because people are passing those up.
@Meekerextreme
@Meekerextreme 9 лет назад
Also to add, I had some places that did not want to give me a VIN what so ever. Maybe a little shady if they are that worried! Even after I explained to them I needed to know if the recall was done to that FDCM because if it was then that part is worthless. I even trying to be nice told them they can check themselves and should to know that question if they don't want to give out a VIN number. It's amazing how the customer service with junk yards is piss poor....first time I dealt with any and I was amazed.

How do I find the 199AH FDMC? Thank you.
@Meekerextreme
@Meekerextreme 9 лет назад
KC Snellgrove Call Salvage and Junk yards around the nation. Ask for the VIN number and run that VIN on jeeps site to see if there is a recall. It will tell you if the N23 recall needs to be done. Then you know and can buy the FDCM. However I found that some salvage yards will bulk at giving you the VIN, I have no idea why and it makes me question them. Also if a place tells you they will need to look and they will get back to you, THEY WON'T. Customer service is very lacking at these places. I called a dozen or so to buy that one which I got from a place in NC. At this point you will have a real challenge in finding one unflashed or for $60-$80.
@Meekerextreme
@Meekerextreme 9 лет назад
Nicholas Mangan Um they were always trying to service for FREE...but my time and trips to the dealer add up to more then an unflashed FDCM. Your call, but the best known fix is not to get the N23 update and if you do the better fix is to just get an unflashed FDCM.

@Meekerextreme
@Meekerextreme 8 лет назад
+rkuehn3 Yep the P whatever update. I approved the link after checking it out but I would not trust them on a fix. The P update has been around for awhile now with mixed results on the Jeep Forum. With 150K miles now I do have a fix with no issues and that was with the FDCM swap from an unflashed unit. Never had a problem yet to turn on 4LO. I don't have remote start, and I use the parking brake as you are taught to do. So the original worry by Jeep on a roll-away is not something that would affect me. I realize getting an unflashed FDCM at this point might be very hard to find for people. There is also another fix and that is to take apart the actuator and on the board actually re-soldier some of the connectors. There was a write-up on the Jeep Forum on that with pictures. Like I said with 150K miles I just hope the Jeep dies so I can justify in getting a new truck...but as vehicles are a money put I'm just waiting for that day.
