I live overseas and I use this video to teach students about how to construct their own news programs at their schools. We break down the intros, how long shots are, where to place the camera, the transitions both visually and linguistically, clothing, who to interview (an eye witness, someone affected by a story or an expert eg, Tom Jolls). It's a subtle nod to the news people that I grew up watching. I miss seeing Irv and Commander Tom on my TV. Thanks for the memories!
Still one of the classiest send-offs ever given in the Buffalo news market. Proof of Irv's legendary stature. Irreplaceable. I don't think we'll ever see his likes again.
It is fitting that Irv's last newscast had a good ol buffalo blizzard as the top story. I was born and raised in Toronto, Canada and we got 3 buffalo tv stations over the air and guys like Wenstein and Tom Jolls were household names in southern Ontario too. We always loved checking in on our neighbours to the south and irv was one of the best anywhere. RIP sir.
I knew Eugene Levy drew from Weinstein to form his portrayal of Earl Camembert on the "SCTV News" sketches, but I wonder whom Joe Flaherty drew from for his depiction of co-anchor Floyd Robertson - veteran Pittsburgh anchor Bill Burns?
Rest in peace, Irv Weinstein. I'm sorry I never had the chance to meet you, but have been blessed to know your son Marc and his wife Valenta and their daughter. What a remarkable career and a wonderful man. Inspiring. May flight of angels sing you to your peaceful destination.
I know Im asking the wrong place but does anyone know of a method to get back into an instagram account? I stupidly lost my password. I would love any tricks you can offer me.
@Camilo Rylan I really appreciate your reply. I got to the site through google and im trying it out atm. Seems to take quite some time so I will reply here later with my results.
"It's 11 PM. Do you know where your children are?" and "Boost Buffalo it's Good for You..." I am from Toronto and loved watching WKBW News and all those Arsons!!! :-)
One other thing: I was living in Rhode Island at the time, but my wife and I(no kids yet) came this way and visited her folks in Erie, and mine in Buffalo. The day of this broadcast, we had pulled in the night before at NYC, and were likely back at our pad in Pawtucket, blissfully unaware that the great Irv had called it a career. Much luck and best wishes, Irv. In closing, though, these words from another news great, Bill Beutel: Good luck and be well.
Thank you so much for posting this- I'll dispatch with the sentiment and ask anyone who reads this if they copied down Irvs address when it was posted in The Buffalo News a couple months ago. Thanks~
"Irv Weinstein, you're really a pro! Ya got all the news that we wanna know. You tell it like it is and never throw us a curve, Nobody says it like Ir-r-r-r-v ! Eye-wit-ness News (Yes-sah!)"
In Loving Memory of Channel 7 Eyewitness News WKBW Buffalo, New York's Irv Weinstein (April 29, 1930 - December 26, 2017) RIP Irv. Thank You Irv for telling our Parents before the 11 O'Clock News “It’s 11 O’Clock, Do you know where your Children are?”
Actually Irv never said this on air although he gets credit for the phrase. It was mostly said by the station announcers, Dave Thomas, Tom Jolls and later, Brian Kahle.
I wonder if there's any ratings information available for this broadcast. I'd guess 80% of the TVs in WNY and southern Ontario were tuned in to this. Irv was the best, still miss him.
I remember this guy Irv Weinstein, he made Buffalo News real good, with him you always got info not just on Buffalo but for I think half of Western New York, I liked his common saying and the song they always played...and let emphasize Im from Toronto, Canada, and they always had him on....
My god, has it been fifteen years already? Growing up in Toronto (as an '80s child) I used to watch channel 7 news, not only because of Irv Weinstein, but because of their theme music. I still consider that theme music (and the CityPulse themes) the best ever and of all time. I don't watch Buffalo news anymore, but have been able to catch a glimpse of it once in a while. And especially channel 7, it looks so lonely and depressing there nowadays. I guess Irv, Tom etc. not being there really hurt channel 7. And watching this video clip, you can see everybody struggling to keep it together
You may want to check out a podcast called Every Little Thing by Gimlet Media. I attached the episode in particular that I think you'll enjoy. It's called 6 O'Clock Soundtrack - megaphone.link/GLT2868501357
This was back when WKBW Channel 7 was a powerhouse, always blowing the competition out of the water in the ratings. Since Irv retired, WKBW Channel 7 was never number 1 in the ratings again. A true testament to the popularity of the legend, Irv Weinstein.
Almost nineteen years to the day since Irv retired. He truly was a great in Buffalo broadcasting he will be missed no one will ever replace him no one he was a Class Act and Buffalo will miss him. Praying that God will give Comfort to the family at this time
It is still hard to fathom in less than 5 years that Irv, Rick and Tom have all passed away. Growing up watching all 3 of them and meeting all of them in person I always pictured all of them living until in their 90s but their legacy will live for decades long after their retirements.
i think it can now be said with the coming of the age of digital, internet based mass communications that irv.rick and tom where the very best local tv news team in the history of television , they certainly where the longest running and most successful, nobody touched them in the ratings for....what? FORTY YEARS? THINK ABOUT THAT!!! FORTY YEARS!!! now tv isnt what it used to be, there are so many other means of information so no ones ever going to touch what they did
If he was in that last group get-together, I didn't recognize him. However, I do recognize Steve Boyd(now of O'Brien and ...), that tall guy giving Irv such a great bear hug.
For the end theme, what would've made it better was if they had some of that piano vamping as KTRK in Houston did with the MCTYW rendition they used in the late 70s.
The Your County line will go up to Tipton (Hamilton) then crash like the hellistic chopper at Cavanaught (London). The Woolworths or Mackey's said they didnt have to buy but did.
