Growing up in the mid 70's, was nothing like watching channel 50 WKBD Detroit. This show has never got old. They don't really make shows like this anymore.
@@roberthunter4884 You're a lucky man. I met country singer, Lee Ann Womack, in line to see the Statue of Liberty Tour on the boat back in 2002. Now they don't do that anymore. I was lucky, twice-fold. Well, anyhow, I managed to have my Sister take a picture with her & I because there wasn't a large crowd. Most were unaware of her presence. Then as there was more buzz, and people began encroaching too much, her two security men whisked her and her family to the ship. She was so kind, generous of her time, and even complimented my jacket. I think most entertainers are nice and generous. They're human expected to do very crazy things sometimes; most notably, not be themselves.
Anyone who works in broadcasting has worked in stations where there WAS a Herb Tarlek or a Les Nessman. While characatures, these personalities really do exist. It's those relatable characters that made this series so timeless and so enjoyable. Here it is, 40 years or so later, and it still holds up. That's good casting and good writing.
The characters were based on real life station personnel, mostly from WQXI in Atlanta. Yes they are characatures to a degree but there were antics aplenty from the likes of Skinny Bobby Harper (Dr Johnny Fever) Gerald Blum (Art Carlson) and others. Im sure you know that the famous turkey drop episode was based on a real life promotion held in the 60s at WQXI, although greatly exaggerated. In fact, the antics at WQXI inspired me to pursue broadcasting in my younger days...great fun!
WKRP was a Masterpiece. So simple ,so relative and down to earth. Yet it captured hearts and minds all over. Isn't it Great how such a simple sitcom attracts so many viewers ? The Writters of Sitcoms like WKRP are so smart. But the Cast was responsible in those like WKRP, for turning them to pure gold. We need Sitcoms like this today. Most of those I see aren't that good. I think back at some of the best and how big of a Fan-base they attracted. WKRP,The Jeffersons,All in the family,Gilligan's Island, Hill Street Blues,Emergency, MASH, Mama's House,exc.,. All with these things in common.. All were written based on the real lives of folks. All simple down to earth creative writing. All with Great Cast Members.. Somewhere down the line, writers forgot how to relate to real lives. Most just do not capture the hearts and minds of viewers in a way that viewers can relate. A Good Wriiter knows.. If you can do this.. You will be successful...
Great cast, great scripts, great laughs. An American classic. Too easily overlooked. Thanks for posting. AFAIR this didn't make it to the UK until the late eighties, may even have been early nineties, where it was shown on an obscure satellite channel , Lifestyle. Great to see it again.
Agreed. Really brings back fond memories of me and my grampa watching when he got home from working at the Cincinnati Enquire. That ole floor model. Man those were the best days.
Wow! I'd forgotten this show. It brings back memories of some very good and stable times in America. We thought times were bad until now. Now most of us wish for those back times. Job security. Highschool, college and family. Great music. Absent of rap. Siggggggh.
"Mister Carlson, when I think of all the little babies up in Heaven waiting to be born, looking for the right kind of parents - and I think what fine people you and Mrs Calrson are - I think how lucky some little baby is going to be." That's touching. Touching and beautiful.
"This is a very strange and weird special case." Mr. Carlson and Carmen are dancing away, and Venus is just sitting there, hating every second of that song! :D
I think they might have changed the song. Venus is holding a Gigi album. I think the song was "Thank Heavens for Little Girls" that's why the Carlson's look at the office speaker so oddly before they dance.
@@barbaracataldo566If memory serves me correctly, the Shout! Factory couldn’t get the licensing for this song. However, the Comedy Channel in Canada (and this is from the Comedy Channel) was able to get the licensing. You heard the correct song.
I've heard Loni is so sweet to meet in person. My brother got his picture taken with her & said she was great with all the guys. LOL ..he framed it .Foxiness is more than skin deep.Luv U Loni
Last time I looked up her bio info she was with husband #4 so whatever reputation she has for being a crazed spender, difficult, domineering or whatever---certainly didn't frighten off another guy from marrying her. Burt & Loni looked great as a couple but that was about it.
@@NOBODY-fz3im .....and just wtf makes you believe you actually know "the whole story" ? Being a Loni fan to this degree outs you as another obsessed weirdo staunchly defending a has-been celebrity you'll never even know...... Get a grip already. These Hollywood people don't give crap about you unless it's to help increase their bank accounts.
Look how cheap this show was to actually "make".. the same sets.. and just a few of them. No outdoors. Little variation. They made a mint on their investment.
Absolutely my favorite series of all time. I have loved it since i was a kid and i think as i age i enjoy it more and more. I hate to sound like the old guy but they don't make them like this anymore.
Awww 🥰 they were so handsome and the girls were so beautiful ! This was a super great sitcom back then and those producers knocked the off the air ! This show never got the credit it deserved back then !!! ❤️❤️❤️😔😔😔😢😢😢
@@kathyflorcruz552 Could be but the networks were really competitive for time slots and really jerked each other around Stupidly, like Jeff Bezos is trying to do with SpaceX and what trump is trying to do with the current guy. trumpster was voted out solidly and he just doesn't get it. It is like Popeye the sailorman could have easily defeated him if it was on the ballot. The great woman that brought us all Star Trek got her time zone juggled so bad, she gave up. The greatest woman tv ever saw. Guess who?
I heard Shout Factory is releasing WKRP: The Complete Series (hopefully with the original music) in September for whopping $130. The price sounds high, but lets hope they include all the original music, as the First Season (currently the only season on DVD at present) has its music changed.
They were able to get only eighty-five per cent of the original music. However, that’s still much better than some of the other releases over the years and definitely a lot better than the syndication package.
just food for thought (as of 2021 when I made this comment) the baby would now be in its early 40s (41-42). how time flies when we're having fun LOL!! I was 11 when this aired on CBS.
My mother had five children, the last of which at the age of 39. And she also lost one between the 2nd and 3rd, so she wasn't afraid of trying again. She's never got tired of being a mom, and really enjoys all her grand, and great-grandchildren. In comparison, Mrs Carlson comes off as the Grim Reaper recommending abortion.
The Mom had 7 of us kids, I'm the youngest she had me at 37. She is now an amazingly strong woman of 94 now. I love everything about her & I'm proud to call her The Mom. She is & I dread the day that I know will come, I just pray for her be in good health without pain til that day.
lrattie Guess that explains why they're always viewed as the bad guy in the media they control, right? Do you get enough oxygen to your brain being so pitifully close-minded?
"Les on a ledge" A fellow reporter refers to Les as a "queer duck" when Les demonstrates his usual lack of understanding about sports and one of the athletes misunderstands and gets Les banned from the locker room. When Les finds out, he reacts badly. But, at least he learns who his friends are...
As any hunter/outdoors sportsman can tell you, WILD turkeys can/DO fly for short distances ( maybe 75 yards) DOMESTIC FARMED birds cant cause they to fattened up with clipped wings,!! DUUUHHH,!!
ROTFLMAO !!!! @ 3:20 !!! Priceless......... :-))) I really miss those shows back then, they were original and actually funny, nothing like the fucking garbage on TV today. I miss old times. :D
David Theisen are you daft? Abortion is most definitely still legal. I don’t agree with her evil intrusion but your absurd statement is equally ridiculous.
Fashion Diva Yeah well it should be illegal! I’m not going to argue! Basically put I will quote a line from a hidden song on one of my POD cds, “Abortion is murder there’s nothing you can say or do to justify the fact that there’s a living breathing baby inside of you!!”
I always found it confusing that the Carlsons were worried about the wife's age, pregnancy and the health of the baby. And then drank champagne while she was pregnant.
Worked for a radio station and the boss watched WKRP. (me too) He decided to build a new building that had a hidden door. It opened to an out of sight Kawasaki 125. Sure, he could sneak out, but when he started the bike it was so loud everybody knew. We didn't care, but he was happy about it.
Scripted or not, that’s evidence that this was the ‘70’s. I highly doubt the network censors would allow that line to air nowadays. What a shame that the censors refuse to trust the viewing audience!
I LOVED THIS SHOW ! ------------And, the memories -------make me sad, wistful, & longing for life in the 70's. -------------------------WolfSky9, 73 y/o
@@richardgalli7262In spite of the ongoing scandal which was Nixon, I consider the ‘70’s to be the last real decade. It’s been downhill since the stroke of noon Eastern Standard Time January 20, 1981.
