Here is a chance to see the incredibly popular Argentina Rocca take on one of the greatest heels of all time Killer Kowalski. Rocca was hugely popular in New York throughout the 50's.

Walter Kowalski might have "officially" been a heel but for some of us he was a beloved heel. He was a vegetarian by the way. I can't remember if he was able to put the claw hold on Antonino Rocca. There were a few other wrestlers to whom he couldn't namely Haystack Calhoun, Yukon Eric and Pepper Gomez (the man with the cast iron stomach)

If Rocca had come along around 50 or 60 years later he would have been very successful in the UFC.

Matt Riddle should study Argentina Rocca...He could learn a lot from his style...

EVERY wrestler should study these two. Conditioning, technique, skill, entertainment - these are two masters at work. Thanks for posting this.

Kowalski claimed that Eric's head moved while hung up in the ropes as he has to jump over the referee and his knee was too close, like it was really an accident.

they never paired Rocca vs Samartino that was McMahon idea wanted Bruon to be life Long Champion.. Rocca was King Madison Sq garden

Don, as a kid back then I remember there were 2 different organizations in NY, the WWWF (Sammartino) and the one where Rocca was champion and the wrestlers from each didn't wrestle each other (at that time anyway) - they were separate. One was channel 11 and one was channel 9 but I don't remember which was which? The WWWF had a lot more names though. The Rocca group had less wrestlers and they all sort of sucked except for Rocca. Rocca at that time was not nearly as popular as Bruno as I remember it.

Not true. Rocca wrestled Sammartino twice at (the old) Madison Square Garden in 1960 or 1961. I was there. First match Rocca won by disqualification (I'm not kidding). The second one ended in a draw. Crowd seemed about evenly divided who they wanted... but booed Rocca when he dropkicked Sammartino from behind.

@@walte153 I was there also, for the first one. Bruno was very green & relied mostly on his strength. Rocca was having trouble getting anywhere with Bruno, so he started heel tactics, choking, eye gauging, etc. Finally Bruno lost it & through Rocca into the corner & the ref tried to pull him off & he threw the ref down, which caused the DQ.

@@stevedworkin7625 Sounds like a failure on the part of the scriptwriter, not on Rocca's or Bruno's part.

@@ronaldlevao8251 Or that Rocca went off script with using heel tactics as he was known to do, which likely happened more often in those days in general, and possibly there was no essential script to follow as they were winging it more. it isn't exactly clear how much influence the most prominent wrestlers had in the decision making process in some of the big matches. Here, Kowalski finally went past the shenanigans and began to manhandle Rocca with stiff moves and I'm not certain why that brought on a DQ so suddenly, then, if that was a count out, why would Rocca automatically be given the victory when Rocca had dropped him over the top rope? However this was set up, Kowalski got railroaded.
