Vitali has one of the highest KO ratios in boxing history (92%), was never knocked down in a fight and was never behind on the judges scorecards after 2 rounds. He came back after almost 4 years out the ring at age 37 to make an easy night's work of WBC champ Samuel Peter (who had given Wlad problems). The only losses he ever had were due to serious injuries, and he was ahead on all scorecards against both Lewis and Byrd. Vitali is one of the most underrated boxers of modern times.

Psychology plays an enormous part in elite sport. I don't think that Wlad would ever have truly believed he could beat his big brother.
@davidchurchwell1728

I thought the same thing. I can’t imagine this fight in a bubble where either man doesn’t see his brother across the ring. From a mental standpoint, I just don’t see how Wlad overcomes Vitali’s toughness. They probably had thousands of rounds of sparring between them growing up, it’s impossible that that familiarity isn’t a factor. Nobody ever so much as staggered Vitali, and Wlad had to know that and it would be on his mind as the fight progressed into the trenches where Vitali excelled.
@jackslater5886
@jackslater5886 2 года назад

@William-Morey-Baker
@William-Morey-Baker 2 года назад
idk, they are Ukrainian... and they were both world champions. i have to imagine that Wlad would have beaten Vitali in sparring matches and would have to know he was capable of getting the W. its not like them being Ukrainian plays an exceptionally large role in that, but eastern Europeans have a kind of toughness towards their male relatives that isnt really matched by American sibling rivalries... but regardless of ethnicity or cultural backgrouds, little brothers have bean beating big brothers for as long as time... its almost built into the human experience... even if we have a certain reverence for our older siblings, we strive to outdo them.
@notsoberoveranalyzer8264
@notsoberoveranalyzer8264 2 года назад
Depends on the relationship. Don’t dismiss younger brothers. He seems like a guy who would be hyped to fight, he’s been watching his big brother all these years. He knows what his brother hates dealing with. But the love of an older brother, I could see him holding back worried about embarrassing his younger brother, though that doesn’t seem to be his personality. Not to mention knowing all his mind games.

Vitali defended his title against 7 top ten ranked contenders, 3 inside the top 3. Wladimar beat 23 different men in world title fights (breaking Joe Louis record), he beat 10 current or former world champions & 12 undefeated fighters with 10 fight or more. Both resumes stack up against the best from any era but the debate rages on who was the best of their era.

You made a great case for Wlad until you said a few scary moments along the way. Wladimir rarely responded well in scary moments and Vitali relished in those moments whether on the delivering or receiving end. I simply don't think Wlad would have survived vs Vitali once he found himself in trouble which likely would have been inevitable. Great vid on two great champions. 💯

A lot of people underestimate the heart Wladimir showed in his career, and the easiest way to disprove this belief is to look at his final fight against the skilled and hard punching heavyweight who currently has the deepest resume in the division. He proved his heart by becoming one of the best HWs ever when everyone wrote him off. Tremendous punching power too. With that being said, Vitali does have an edge in punch resistance and has underrated punching power - he knew how to time and place his punches without loading up too much very well. Dillian Whyte and Shannon Briggs had a discussion about him and both said that his punches hurt a lot even when it seemed he wasn't trying too much. He has a very high KO percentage and was never dropped, all against 240 plus lbs heavyweights. One of the very few heavyweight champions who could fight very while backing up.. Both brothers very good defensively, and contrary to popular belief, they had pretty good head movement when they had to display this skill. Check Vitali vs Danny Williams leaning back and slipping multiple punches. It's a 55/45 fight in favour of Wladimir, i'm in the minority too. Huge fan of both.
@DepressionShaman
@DepressionShaman 2 года назад
Yeah, I think that Anthony Joshua performance just might have been Wlad's best performance of his later years. Dude had the heart of a young lion that night. Even after getting dropped a couple of times and getting rocked by that fearsome uppercut, he had bounce in his step. Wlad wasn't going quietly into the night. He went out like a grown ass man.

@smoothcritical1
@smoothcritical1 Год назад
Chisora has the deepest "resume" in the division. Fury and Usyk have the best and it's not close. Many heavyweight champions have had backfoot games. I don't considering blowing the Joshua fight to be a feather in Wlad's cap. Apparently his idiot brother told him not to go for the finish against Josh lol. Ruiz didn't get that memo though, thankfully. Vitali's punching power is hugely overrated. He needed hundreds of shots to score attritional stoppages. Hoffmann, Kevin, Briggs and Chisora all went 12 with no KD's taken, Danny Williams and Sosnowski got to the 8th and 10th despite Vitali throwing the kitchen sink and he couldn't put a dent in Byrd or Lewis over 15, who were blown out in the 1st half a few times. It's ironic that most consider Vitali braver when Wlad overcame far more adversity and unlike Vitali, never quit in a fight.

I love how the Klitschko Era is labelled as "the weakest ever" simply because his opponents weren't big names in the English-speaking world. While US had to watch a dreadful fat man dance between Hasim Rahman and James Toney, Eastern Europe enjoyed action-packed fights of guys like Alexander Povetkin, Ruslan Chagaev, Alexander Dimitrenko or Vladimir Virchis, very talented guys that were labelled by the US and UK as nobodies. I still believe Vitali's toughness would win the day. Sure Vitali was awkward and didn't have as much snap in his shots. He continued to throw a variety of punches throughout his career. Where as Steward in fine tuning Wladimir, and to keep his questionable chin protected, Wladimir became a three punch fighter. Jab, Straight, Left Hook. I think Vitali's great judgement of distance, granite chin, and awkward but vaired punch arsenal would win the day.
@shropsiberian

Vitali by late stoppage. He was made of iron & only ever got stopped because of a shoulder injury or severe cuts. He never got dropped. Wladimir couldn't take a decent punch, which is why he developed the style that he did, to air caution & protect himself whilst wearing his opponent down. But Vitali would've been too tough for Wladimir.

A fight between these two great warriors could have potentially been the best of all time. But at the end of the day, they still have to live the rest of their lives, post boxing career, as brothers, and they were obviously very close. And given their competitive nature, this fight would have been so competitive and so brutal, that neither one of them were likely to psychologically recover from it. And that is why they did not fight each other, and I am personally glad they didn't. Some things are more important than our own personal entertainment.

No way prime Wladimir survives "a few scary moments along the way" (as you said) against a high-caliber finisher like prime Vitali. Wladimir have never dealt with harsh moments and adversities well, and there are so many evidence to prove that. If those moments happen, there's no doubt in my mind that Vitali finishes him off rather quickly - instead of letting him off to a decision. And although it's true that on paper, Wladimir seems to be more technical and have more raw power, Vitali has the attributes to make up where it matters the most (extremely durable chin, super high pain threshold, and the fact that he just "fights" better, and make better decisions in hard moments).

This is why I don't see why not unify all of the titles & may the best brother win!👍 I seen Vitali take some brutal punches, to include missing out on being next Unified champ of the World by that nasty one delivered by Lewis & never hit the mat. It was the doctor who stopped the fight in LA & the fans (& myself) felt Vitali got robbed.🥵 One thing for sure, Lewis didn't hang around for a rematch.🤣

Wlad himself once said “I became a fighter; Vitali was born a fighter.” It would be an amazing fight & Wlad probably would display better skills but despite that I don’t think he would be able to seriously rock Vitali (who took Lewis’s best shots and has never been down.) Vitali is also the more aggressive, with a very awkward style and a relentless crushing jab. All you have to do is compare how they both performed against Corrie Sanders, who KO’d Wlad and was then stopped by Vitali.
@BigWes95

For my money Vitali was too big and strong to be leaned all over like wlad did to a load of smaller guys who he beat. He would've comfortably beaten the best version of wlad
@kiely4561

I’m not sure if he’d have comfortable beaten him, Wlad was probably more athletic and technically talented than vitali, he had a better jab and was probably slightly faster, I would still pick vitali to get him late but it would have been close, probably Wlad being up on the cards at the time of the stoppage

@BigWes95
@BigWes95 2 года назад
@@kiely4561 I disagree that wlad was more athletic. He looked much more clunky and awkward in the ring. Vitali was a much more natural fighter who barely lost a round in his career. He could do much more than wlad who only had one way of fighting. Vitali could box or he could go in and have an alley fight and only really ever lost because of injuries rather than actually losing. People forget that Vitali had a bigger repertoire of punches. While Wladimir was hardwired to throw only straight one two and a left hook (all to the head), Vitali didn’t mind to exchange on the inside throwing short uppercuts and various hooks aswell. Vitali was just less predictable. Therefore I think that Wladimir vs Vitali (both in there primes) would have looked very similar to Wladimir against Fury.

@kiely4561
@kiely4561 2 года назад
Wlad was actually winning against AJ before he got stopped, he made Joshua look pedestrian at times, that was probably one of the best performances I’d seen from wlad despite losing, Vitali was doing great against Lewis but he did get stopped from punches thrown by Lewis, for me it’s 60-40 in vitali’s favour, I don’t think vitali would have just blasted wlad away, Wlad was technically very good, had better punch variation, faster, better jab and hit very hard, vitali might of had to walk through a few bombs to get him, but I think he would have late on

Wlad was better against opponents his size. He almost ko'd an excellent heavyweight in his prime (AJ) while he was almost two years inactive and 41 years old. He got outboxed by Fury by 30 punches in 12 rounds, never seriously hurt. Could and should have done better. But i'd say you need to watch Wlad's fights vs big heavyweights. Both bros were better against big heavyweights.

I’ll take Vitali’s heart and grit over Wlad’s skill any day. Wlad truly had a glass jaw, his skill during Emanuel’s reign really tightened up with defense and improved his jab. Vitali lost twice, once for an injured shoulder and once for a damaged eye, he wasn't getting knocked down as much as Wladimir. Wladimir did fight longer and perhaps against some more notable opponents over time, but he got beat up and knocked down and out several times. I think Vitali wins, he was just tougher.

I always respect your opinion Rummy - but despite the advantages Wlad had... the advantages Vitali had are for me critical advantages... he was significantly tougher with much better punch resistance... and he never got truly rattled in a firefight... I see them ending up at some point trading big shots and Wlad folding under the pressure.

Vitali, and yeah, it's all about the toughness. Thing is, it's not only Vitali's strong point (his chin is up there with the greatests) it's also Wladimirs weakness. So even though Wlad is the better boxer, the chin makes the difference. Another less important advantage Vitali has, is that he is taller.
@robertcatania1120
@robertcatania1120 Год назад
Ok Rummy you absolutely nailed all of the points I wanted to make, but we do come to a different conclusion. In my eyes, I always viewed Vitali as an undefeated fighter. As both of his losses were due to injury (rotator cuff and bad cut on eye) despite the fact he was winning both of those fights on all 3 judge's cards. If he didn't get stopped for that cut, he easily wins (I always thought he would eventually win by KO) against an all-time heavyweight legend in Lennox Lewis. Wladimir doesn't have a single victory on his resume that would compete with that. Wladimir had the far better career accomplishments, but his chin was so suspect. He lost to journeyman fighters who had no business knocking out a heavyweight champion of Wladimir's caliber (and it happened multiple times Puritty, Sanders, Brewster). I take it a step further to say that knowing the career that Wladimir ended up having (in a VERY weak heavyweight era mind you) his loss to Corrie Sanders is a bigger upset than Douglas vs Tyson. Not on the grand scale of things but just in the sense that Douglas was 10x the fighter Sanders was and Buster was literally magnificent the night he beat Tyson. Sanders looked and fought like a guy that was just picked out of the crowd and Wladmir was absolutely destroyed by him in 2 rounds getting knocked all over the place. Tyson took a beating for 10 straight rounds before finally going down. As you mentioned Stewart perfected the art of using Wladimir's size and reach to his advantage not allowing any fighter to get close enough to his weak chin. It's why most people found Wladimir fights boring despite his high KO%. He would jab, jab, 1, 2. and get the hell out of there or clinch if any opponent got close. Eventually wearing down his opponent and catching them with a good one from a distance. Vitali being as tall (and agree not as athletic as Wladimir...he was always very awkward and not the best technical fighter) and having a long reach would have an easier time matching Wladimir in this game plan with the exception that Vitali had a much better chin. I say Vitali wins that fight and I will always look at Vitali as the better of the two brothers, despite what history on paper would tell you.

The WBOgus didn't need to be recognised as a major title, three was more than enough. The trouble is boxing fans were inconsistent. They complained about alphabet politics and splintered titles but as soon as one of their heroes held the WBOgus suddenly they were happy with four belts. Recognising the WBO retroactively gives their earlier title holders a status they don't deserve, diluting the title picture even more than it is. The Big Three have had their fair share of poor titleholders, but they were not founded on poor champions in the way the WBO was - that's the difference. Boxing fans do a lot of complaining but they get the sport they deserve a lot of the time.
