From WNBC, New York City's channel 4, here's the last few minutes of Sunday night programming. I'm not sure if this is 1984 or '85. There's a brief Family Feud promo followed by a Don Pardo-introduced editorial with Joe Michaels (about crooked contract bidding on Long Island). Then Rabbi Reuven Siegel of the East 55th Street Conservative Synagogue delivers a sermonette on true friendship. A station ID follows and then Wayne Howell signs off into the National Anthem and color bars. Thank you and good night. No rights held or implied. (If you'd like this video removed for copyright reasons, please contact me rather than notifying RU-vid, I will gladly take it down from this channel.) This is on compilation 24 at oldtvads.blogspot.com...

I remember Wayne Howell as the announcer for Concentration when Bob Clayton replaced Hugh Downs as host in 1969. He also filled in on other New York based games including the original Match Game and the syndicated version of What's My Line.

I always liked the music. It really set you in the mood. NBC has the best Sermonettes then any other channel. The topics and stories used to go really deep. I really miss being young at that time and learning. such a more better time in life then what we have today

"The programs broadcast by this station may not be used for any purpose except exhibition at the time of their broadcast on receivers of the type ordinarily used for home reception in places where no admission, cover or mechanical operating charges are made. This is Channel 4 WNBC TV in New York. This concludes our program schedule for the day. Portions of the preceding broadcast day were pre-recorded. For the best in television entertainment, stay with WNBC TV Channel 4 in New York. We'll return to the air tomorrow with more of your favorite programs. This is Wayne Howell wishing you a good night on behalf of Channel 4. And now, our National Anthem."

When the Television Code was dropped in 1983, Wayne Howell took over as signoff announcer for 2 years before retirement. Afterwards, the job went to Fred Facey.

The "Family Feud" promo sounds like it was done by Bill Wolff, who often did live sign-off newscasts on Channel 4, and was also heard on the network weekday afternoons back then, as he introduced "the continuing story of 'Another World'."

Rabbi Siegel must've been Channel 4's resident religious figure; because somewhere in my video collection, I have another Sermonette with him in it--same suit, same set, only he tells the story of Samson & Delilah.

Well we have heard Fred Facey, Wayne Howell, and Arthur Gary. Too bad the voice of NBC the late great Don Pardo did not do a sign-off, or even if he did it's not available.

I think, before 1975, Mel Brandt handled the pre-recorded sign-off (when WNBC bore the 'TV 4' logo and "Your Community Minded Station" slogan). In the 1960's, whoever was on duty on the late night to sign-off shift would have done the sign-offs. Over the years, they would have included Jerry Damon (heard on a 1958 sign-off when the station was WRCA-TV), Bob Waldrop (back in 1960), Matt Thomas (before leaving for WQXR - and definitely before Long John Nebel came to WNBC 660 AM), John Clarke, and Bill Rippe.

A later 1985 sign-off of WNBC on YT has Fred Facey V/O'ing; at what point in the year would have have replaced Mr. Howell who's heard here?

I would date this to 1984 or 1985 by the Family Feud promo myself.

Bill Wolff handled the station ID / "Family Feud" promo.

I was always curious. Did NBC shoot these Sermonettes in the NBC studio itself?

It was definitely before Fred Facey became the sign-off announcer, for sure (must've been after Howell retired). But I wonder: a) which color bar generator was used for those bars, and b) why we haven't been seeing any clips of Channel 4's older color circular test pattern outside of their final analogue sign-off in 2009.
