Here's a partial sign-off from WNEW. Judging from the news, I'd say it's from the wee morning hours of May 7th, 1984. A "Thicke of the Night" promo is followed by News Headlines read by Ed Ladd, then a "Break Away" promo. The Sermonette (with the irrepressible Sylvia Herz) is followed by the Good Night card and VO. No Star-Spangled Banner on this one, sorry--it's intact on the original (trade comp 36) but I left it off since I've put it on YT previously. No rights held or implied. (If you'd like this video removed for copyright reasons, please contact me rather than notifying RU-vid, I will gladly take it down from this channel.) Ed Ladd was also the host of a few tv cartoons show on WNEW TV Ch.5 in NYC..including:"Cartoon Playtime!"..which he co-hosted with Fred Scott,Tom Gregory and Fred Hall.Sadly..he would pass away..two years after this news broadcast.

Yes I remember Cartoon Playhouse.I remember a Cartoon with a Cat called Percy. I think he showed a lot of Terrytoons.

These bring back so many memories. This was the same year I first got into the WNEW News headlines and sign offs. It's great to see that all these posts are from that same time. I really wish I had all my old VHS tapes of the ones I recorded. Yes, this was a few months before the forty years of fine tuning craze began. I think the new indent and jingle came starting the fall of 1984. I would like to share my memories from the VHS samples I recorded back then. By September of 1985 and only six months before WNEW became Fox 5, they started to change the slides for the new headlines. They had updated slides of NYC. It didnt last long because before WNEW became Fox 5 they eliminated the headlines all together. I think in the beginning of 1986 they were all done and the sign offs would start with the Milk Man's Matinee Jingle. By March of 1986 it was sadly over, but I would love to see more of these and also the sign offs from channel 4 WNBC with the Sermonettes if anyone has any out there

+mgw574 I have vague memories of the headlines segments from back in the day, love finding them on the tapes I've acquired. I have more of them, but some are kind of redundant (I must have at least three of the Sermonette with Jessica James reading the Kipling passage). I also don't post them all in hopes that someone will want to trade something for them, either old video or something else that fits in my nostalgia collection (dontparade.blogspot.com/2014/01/at-last-updated-archive-most-of-it.html). I take it your tapes are gone? In any case, I'm glad you enjoy my uploads, thanks for looking!

Walter Mondale was the Democratic nominee in 1984,but Geraldine Ferraro was his VP nominee, both were soundly defeated by the Reagan/Bush team in a landslide.

Does anyone remember when they changed and updated the slides in the fall of 1985? A few months later in 1986 the channel did away with the late news headlines and then shortly after the channel became Fox 5 : (

The "News Headlines" slide used at the start and finish was the older variant, and not the newer 1984 version to tie in with the 40 Years of Fine Tuning Theme. I am guessing it wasn't introduced until later in the year. And Ms. Herz there looks like her head was coming out of a cake!

You would be correct; it wasn't until late September-early October of 1984 that WNEW introduced their "40 Years of Fine Tuning" promo. As you probably know, WNEW (Now WNYW) signed on as WABD (named after Dumont Network found Allen B. Dumont) in 1945, but was renamed WNEW in the mid 1950s after Metromedia took over as the station's owner, then became WNYW in the summer of 1986 shortly after the sale to Fox.

Alexander Arce I have about 360 TV Guides, almost all New York City metro editions, 1975-1983. Also, I grew up on Long Island, so I also have about 200 TV Books from Newsday, 1972-1985.
