You don't hype yourself up at all but the rate at which you 100% these games is so impressive. I don't think I've ever seen a reviewer with a better work ethic. I know its gaming, but still, I can't play for a couple hours in a row sometimes but you really put in the work amigo. Very glad I subbed and I've been watching nearly EVERY upload, you sir are a legend.
Regardless of the head start, it's always impressive how quickly you speed through these games, get the 100%, and push out the review. Great work, great content, keep it up!
Would you consider adding another section specifically for the 100% completion aspect of the game you're reviewing? Specific challenges, potential rewards, unique achievements, etc.
Would be interesting for sure! Please take this under consideration - maybe even show some variety of stuff to find in the game as mentioned above or even easter eggs
While it might be a good addition, I'm pretty sure he's said he does the 100% for credibility not for the sake of completing them. I'm not sure he's thinking about these topics when making videos.
That would be the best part honestly. Everyone covers gameplay/story/performance elements, but rarely stuff like sound effects or achievements. Some people like ACG cover sound in depth but never seen anyone talk about achievemnents and challenges
I've been subscribed to you for just under a year now and I gotta say you're one of the best reviewers on RU-vid! I saw your first impressions video just yesterday for Wo Long, and that was actually better than the other game reviews I saw lol. I can't believe how fast you've become lately with these 100% reviews! It's like you've perfected your craft. So grateful I found your channel!🙏🏾
I'd love to see you play and 100% games. Your hard work is being appreciated after working so hard all these years. Congratulations, you have earned it .
Yeah, ever considered publishing a "review run"? Basically a gameplay fully registered I'm which you get to 100% a game. And the review at the end. This would probably increase the time you need to pushout a review but would function as a "competent gameplay" which many people would be interested watching. I follow an Italian RU-vidr that did this a lot of times. Best one was for Cyberpunk 2077. He published the whole blind run he did to evaluate the game, and then he did a review.
Dude legit, you're an inspiration when it comes to your consistent work ethic, the quality of your reviews, and how you could achieve 100% completion so quickly and consistently. I'd legit would watch a video of your 100% completion process and any tips and tricks you might have for gamers who are interested in doing 100% completion of their games if you haven't already. Hell at this point I'll be watching your content for as long as you make them.
+1. I really like getting 100% so, it's like one of the most important topics/questions which is very rarely touched, even tho there is "100%" in the title itself
Most of the trophies are pretty straightforward. Complete missions, find pandas, do specific things in 3 or 4 missions. Those specific things are easy to come by if you explore maps fully. There is also an item called cup of cordiality to increase follower lvl. At lvl 10 you unlock their gear and weapon 4 stars. You can farm cups on several levels to upgrade all followers if you don't want the AI following you in missions.
@@kronosleblu888 well for all its worth wo long spec requirement is actually lower than nioh 2 not sure why but it is lower performance seems to be case by case as i've seen people with lower pc spec having it work fine with simillar settings to ones with higher spec. im gonna assume they hire a 3rd party company for porting the game and that company just copy pasted the thing from console
Your reviews are so good that by half video I already am able to understand if the game is for me or not, because you give so many details. Still, usually I end up watching until the end because the way you expose and argument are so enjoyable that it is a pleasure to follow you until the end of the video. Well done, keep on keeping on. Hope your channel gets big and bigger
Hi Mortismal! Became a fan before the New Years due to you unparalleled (so far) coverage of cRPGs which you successfully encouraged someone like me who is not used to the genre to try the latest and greatest (WOTR). I love that you are covering the newer games outside cRPGs and I am currently awaiting for your takes on the future releases to come. Just like Wo Long! Though I have to agree on one thing to improve your niche of review structure: Would really like you to touch on the completionist aspect of the games you cover because even though I enjoy your thorough touch ups on the game mechanics, etc. I feel it's much better if you cover more of the special achievements or the sections of the game that usually don't get experience by someone who's playing the game in full (someone commented it here already but I really want to echo that one). Your experience of 100%'ing the game and the level of difficulty it may bring for someone like yourself who 100% their games all the time. Love your content! Here for your success as I' m sure it's nothing but up from here. Glad to be a part of your Steam group too! Cheers!
Hey, so we had this discussion about your 100% approach in a Discord channel, and I think they are right in that you should add an extra section about the 100%. Many games can drastically change in the fun department if you aim to 100% them. You sometimes mention it but not always (How grindy, repetitive, are there new mechanics only for sidequest content?, is the 100% just the usual collect 3 chicken wings in 3 parts of the world quests? Can the best weapon only obtained through obscure side missions? etc.) Otherwise, great work as always!
Yeah 100% the original Nioh made the game much better as i was forced to use all the weapons. This offset some of the tedium of fighting the same enemies( the games biggest flaw). I would have probably just played the game poking away with the spear otherwise and dropped it at some point.
I'm genuinely impressed by you getting through the game. I think I literally can't get through the boat level because it keeps randomly crashing and resetting my progress...
I'm having the same issue, although it's a bit intermittent. Weirdly, I have to restart my pc to get it to run again as well. If I reopen immediately it crashes on startup. It only seems to happen after a couple hours or so, so it isn't too bad. Frustrating definitely, but I have had worse pc experiences. I hated that boat level, not because of the design but because I died a lot.
@@georgen5882 So I eventually got tired of turning down the graphics settings when restarting after every crash and for whatever reason that stopped the crashing. I had literally just turned off AO and the volumetrics to low. Only had the one where you need to reboot once, most crashes the game starts up fine after.
Mortismal you are something else. I found another reviewer similar to you, The Completionist, who also completes games to 100% before reviewing. The difference between you two, however, is you review as many games in two weeks as he does in a year lol. I dig how you report on performance issues, which have become such a huge problem. Big Ups, and thank you for your hard work.
All their games are rough in regards to performance at launch. They always sort these problems out after a while. I wouldn't get too concerned about it.
I tried this game yesterday and definitely hit the brick wall of the first boss. I finished all three Souls games, Elden Ring and Bloodborne but getting past that first boss will take some time. It's very comforting to hear that it's a real difficulty spike and not representative of the other bosses.
My personal experience is that there are definitely harder bosses than the first one, but at that point you have much more tools and more importantly, you have learned the combat system. What they do now is, they throw you in to the deep water at the very beginning and see if you learn to swim. It´s hard boss at that point, when you are just trying to figure out, how the game works, but it will force you to learn the basic mechanics of the combat system and that will reward you later on. You might´ve already get past this boss, but if not, my tip for you is the similar that Sekiro did: unlearn everything you learned from Dark Souls /Bloodborne and implement a new kind of mind set. It´s actually very similar type of deflection based fighting as Sekiro has. With Sekiro I had huge problems for quite a long time, because I tried to play it like I played Dark Souls etc. games.
I don't know how you could even say it's that hard, after the first try i was able to repeatedly stunlock him and deflect most of his attacks. He'll, I'd say the regular tiger monsters are way harder.
@@palamedes4740but that’s also a flawed logic tho. In terms of entertainment, u do need to watch the whole movie/play before giving it a proper rating tho. Otherwise u miss alot.
Good review as always. While I was waiting for your review, I knew I would play this game regardless, because I already played Nioh 1 & 2 and loved it. For those who are curious and know about Nioh, Wo Long is to Nioh what Sekiro is to Dark Souls... That's roughly the same tradeoff : Tighter and more fast paced combat at the cost of build variety. Nioh already did suffer from a weird itemisation where you had truckloads of weapons and armor pieces, most of it worthless since you could craft on top of and transmog existing items.
Curious to see what you think of Nioh 1 & 2 and Sekiro. They are basically the games that this game borrowed most of the design choices from (same devs as Nioh series too)
To be fair although the stat increases on gear aren't that much they're obviously supposed to be stacked for that reason. If you put 2% extra melee damage on all your gear you can get over a 12% bonus.
You are such a prolific content creator, it's amazing. As a newcomer to your channel I am watching your older videos on the side but I can't match your upload speed!
Well, seeing how fast that man is completing games, I think if he puts his mind to it he can have a review for the entire series in 2 days time. 1 day and 23 hours of that time being spent editing the video.
@@chenoir nah yakuza games have a fuck ton of collectibles, side quests and mini games. It can't be as fast as just playing through a hack and slash game.
I think adding this type of combat in a general dw game would be awesome! A massive scale battle but never feeling significantly OP, and engaging in dueling like dw4 had... ugh that's the dream. Idk how I feel about the demon bosses
I played this game and beat it on xbox series x, and I've gotta say I only crashed once, I love the story and the difficulty, it's extremely good and if anyone has gamepass. Give it a try
I feel that as someone that reviews the game after 100% it I would like to hear more in your reviews how was this journey, where there any egregious RNG? Annoying side content? What side activities would you not do because the rewards are not worth? Your reviews are very well structured but this kind of information only someone that experience all the game can give.
I just played trough the base game on game pass. I agree with the overall assessment. Would not recommend you buy it full price but if you have gamepass, givt it a go. It's ok to play through once, apparently it gets better with the DLCs and NG+ but after playing through NG, i just couldn't be bothered. Has its moments but overall disappointing Team Ninja game.
I thinking about getting back into it. I never got passed the first boss back when it released due to bad reviews convincing me it’s not worth it but after all the updates the game seem to be in a better place with more content and I’m kinda on a souls like high right now after Lies of P, Lords of the Fallen remake, Elden ring DLC and currently playing Wukong. I’m gonna go in with an open mind and not try to compare it to Nioh 2 or other great souls/souls like games.
It's a shame PC is having so many issues on optimization... PS5 is playing flawlessly for me and my partner. I hope the issues are resolved soon for everyone and thank you for another awesome review.
Playing on ps5 and I love it so far. I really like the parry system, holding r1 while parrying does a special weapon switch parry move that does damage. Yes some of the systems compared to Nioh 2 have been simplified so to speak but it also makes the game less grindy.
It's simple and less grindy until you look at the nightmare that is the gem system. Actually acquiring the right flavor of gems with them being true random is worse grind than perfect soul cores could ever be But I imagine this'll get ironed out by dlc1/2
People keep saying this game is simple... When I'm already overwhelmed. I wanted to play Nioh 2 but HOW on Earth can it be MORE convoluted than Wo Long?!
If you're willing to put in the effort to get past the first few bosses it actually clicks and is fun even on PC with frame hikes (yes using a controller and added a frame cap to 60 instead of 120). Many concepts were not explained well imo like how to let your followers attack. Once you get it it's more fun. And yes want to echo the first boss sentiment. The 2nd level boss was literally a cakewalk where I was surprised it was dead so fast. And that's from me having struggled on the first boss for hours with close to 100 attempts. If you want to make it a bit easier, grind the level and get your morale to 25. Second once you get past the first level you're able to buy items to keep your morale level even after death which makes keeping your overleveled power easier when you do lose against the boss the first time.
Another game you might want to add to your list of reviews is Warhammer 40,000: Battlesector. The game released in a great state, and the developers keep adding content, balance and bug fixes, even in 2023. Probably the best Warhammer 40,000 game of the last decade.
I'll be honest, despite the flaws I'm really enjoying the game. A few patches here and there to improve technical issues and connection when playing co-op and invasions. PvP with that combat is fantastic, frenetic, it's like an anime fight. 🤣
Just looking at the footage the combat always looks like a mess. Numbers, visual effects, a ton of different bars flashing and filling/decreasing, button prompts, the weird red blood and vein effects and the somewhat hectic animations. It really doesn't look like something I want to play to be honest despite it sounding pretty fun on paper and my love for soulsike games.
I'm still trying to finish Theatrhythm Final Bar Line and here's the damn GOAT 100%ing soulslikes and JRPGS. My dude. Give us a minute 😭 Jokes aside though, fantastic job. Nioh was a game I put down on 3 occasions when I got completely walled so I'm skeptical about Wo Long, especially with the first boss REQUIRING you to learn parrying, something I literally didn't use once in my entire run of Nioh and only truly learned the timing for with the Pursuer in Dark Souls 2. Props my guy 👏
I don't understand where people find performance issues with this game, I have mid-to-high tier PC from 2017 or 18, only upgraded to 16Gb of RAM since, and the only performance issue I had was slight frame issues in the rainy level with the tiger boss.
Need an honest response: the first boss is so ridiculously tough but addicting from the demo. I shelved buying it because of the first boss. Is it still worth buying the full game and keep trying? Does the game get better?
I swear I died at least 50 times trying to beat that tutorial boss. I came very close to uninstalling the game but persevered and finally beat him. The developers really screwed up with that opening boss fight, as it’s a massive roadblock for newer players; like myself.
I don't understand how people had so much trouble. I just hammered him over and over with a sword and he literally can't even fight back half the time.
How fast you push these 100% game runs out is incredible. I would love to do a small 30 minute documentary about your process and follow you through a game completing it
I don't know if you have played nioh 2 but I highly suggest you put that on a back log. It's great. 1 of the few games I go back to a couple times a year.
I guess I got lucky? I have a 3080 with a 5800 3dx and didn't get any crashes or any super crazy frame drops during my run. I do run a pretty barebones version of windows to increase my gaming performance but I feel like that wouldn't fix the issues most people seem to be having. Also what an absolute mad lad for never switching to a controller.
With all 3 DLC's out now the game is in a pretty good place. Ya, the levels are not great. But the combat makes up for any shortcomings in the rest of the game.
I get the impression that very late in development, someone with a lot of power completely changed their mind on the build system. They abruptly felt *very* strongly that their existing build system (one where you wouldn't have access to anything like that crafting system and definitely not early, and build *is* super important but just something you could only engage with through insane amounts of grinding for loot) needed to change, possibly because it's the least reviewer-friendly thing imaginable. No journalist has ever *had* a Nioh build, and they're like 90% of the game's fun. The problem is, they had this change of mind after the *entire* game was built around refining that existing system. They decided to offer an easy mode - one where you didn't need to grind and could just have the gear you normally would in NG+5 from the start, without refining enemy health and numbers to compensate. The problem is that rather than offering a toggle, it defaults to on and there is no off.
@@observer8477 It's literally all the systems of Strangers of Paradise. It's not the systems of Nioh. The Parry as a central mechanic is in both. The fact that almost all gear drops don't really matter is very Strangers. The idea of breaking an enemy and then hitting the same button to finish them is Strangers. It's 100% the Strangers of Paradise back end with Three Kingdoms stretched over the top, It's also NOT a Kou Shibusawa title, as both Nioh are.
@@Kasaaz i played strangers it has some similarities but its more of sekiros deflect and nioh s looking of graphics.its all over the place like sekiro, but i agree it has something of strangers.we agree and disagree, anyway i changed the buttons well and it has fun,i like it.not like sekiro of course but good enough to keep me playing it,after the remaping and the update it became alot better to handle...
@@observer8477 I don't meant like... conceptually. It is Sekiro a bit in that regard. I mean technically / literally the engine of Strangers of Paradise. The inventory management of Strangers of Paradise. A resource-backed Parry like Strangers of Paradise and a block button that is mostly useless like Strangers of Paradise. Mainly it's just that this is NOT a spiritual successor to Nioh in any way. The fact that builds are not really a thing. That gear doesn't really matter. There's one build, you just get to pick how your attacks look by choosing a weapon. There's no real strategy. You just deflect when you can, then Fatal Blow. That's literally every boss fight. I'm glad they're fixing the technical stuff, but the more I played, the more I realized there's not much to this game besides interesting level design and a very simple combat loop.
Man. Rare to see a game come out these days that has issues across PC and console. We need to really improve our game on the technical side when it comes to these new releases.
Awesome work! If you ever decide to review or even first look one of the two Nioh games, it would be very interesting to compare it to your thoughts on Wo Long!
I checked the Xbox achievements list, only 50% even placed a battle flag for the first time which you do during the prologue. Then only 23% have defeated the first boss. Sad so many people are abandoning so fast
Probably because it's on Gamepass alot of casual gamers that are new to the genre are trying it out, on steam it's 92% for first battle flag and 83% for the first boss you can clearly see it's mostly souls like/nioh audience buying it
I want to like and play this game, but unless u master the parry/deflect system to a god-like precision, ads, and bosses will destroy u and it feels like you have no chance. The crafting system is a nightmare, yea let me choose between these 100 different perks that seem to have no explanation. melee attack, sprit melee. arts melee, martial spirit, wizardry spirit, ranged spirit attacks? wtf are those. Yeah, I quit at the Decons copy boss because the game kept crashing and I kept getting stunned locked by everything attacking simultaneously. anyways, my personal experience with the game so far. not gonna bother reinstalling
@@drummingtildeath Took me like 45 mins to beat him and i suck at souls games. There are 2-3 bosses at a similar level, but other than that, you can 1st try most. its one of the easiest souls likes you'll ever play. BUT, if you dont like difficulty at all, then these types of games might not be for you. They really dont have much else to offer other than combat.
Team Ninja is the second-best at making these type of games. And they still don't come anywhere CLOSE to From Software. Which tells you something about the level the later is operating on.
Definitely recommend it on PS5, didn't crash a single time and didn't notice a single framedrop on performance mode. Great review as always! Definitely my go-to channel whenever I'm in doubt of getting a game :-)
@@ThirdEyeThriving Personally, I am a fan of both Nioh 2 and Sekiro. As such, the game suits my tastes. I am finding it to be excellent and well worth the money.
@@ThirdEyeThriving I had a lot of fun with the game, got 100% yesterday and I'm looking forward to the DLC. It's a niche title, I loved every second of Sekiro and Nioh 2; this feels like a combination of both with some own changes. Definitely recommend it for fans of these two games. Probably a no for everyone who prefers games with difficulty sliders tho! Almost cancelled my preorder when the first boss killed me for 21 times in a row in the demo. But as soon as I went out victorious, I couldn't stop playing because it was just so much fun. :-)
While it might be true that using a controller would make the experience better, that is no excuse. If somebody wants to make a game for PC, you should be able to play it comfrotbaly on mouse and keyboard. Otherwise they shouldn't port the game to PC at all.
Wait didn’t this game just release? That’s very impressive lol I hope you’re actually enjoying the games and not just going through the motions to finish as fast as you can
Im kinda amazed by the sheer consistency of your uploads. And the quality does not dwindle either. Even if this is your full-time job it is quite impressive. Kudos to you!
You did not miss on a single point. This is a rare occurance in which I agree with literally everything someone said throughout an entire review with absolutely no nuance. I am completely unambivalent to the point where this may be the most correct I've ever known a person to be about something. Before watching this video I was not aware there was a form of correct that felt more correct than correct. In the millennia of illustrious history pertaining to human communication, an opinion has never come this close to being fact - IN FACT - the line between the optinions presented in this video a completely unquestionable reality is so thin that it would slide between the atoms of an apple and yet leave it unsliced, completely intact.
This is one of the best games I have ever played. Loving Souls, Sekiro and Ninja Gaiden this is a very good combination of these games. Playing on XBOX. I am in the "Tower Of Latria" right now 🐸 (I love how they just stole that). Now please make Ninja Gaiden 4 😋
Its easy if its your job. Im at my dayjob 8 hours a day, then i can game for 4 after. Thats 12 hours a day he can grind these out, thats more than enough.
@@czaXone Side quests are part of the 100% experience tho. So is the story (he mentioned watching the cutscenes in the main menu because of crashing issues).
@@Eldenbruh Yea and if you laser focus on getting the game done because it's your job, you get really efficient at it. It was funny when he did his review of Hogwarts and it took myself and all of my friends I talked to an average of double what he said it took him to play through it (both story only and 100%). I'm not saying he isn't getting enjoyment out of some/all of this, but he's definitely not putting as much into each of these games as you might think.
Disappointed to hear that the game has a Sekiro-esque emphasis on parrying. I've been playing souls games since DS (well, King's Field lol), but have never, ever been able to parry with any reliability. I just don't have the timing and reflexes for it.
Saw this was game was out on stream. Seen it was mostly negative, looked at my subscription, saw who just 100% it, what's the deal Motismal? *23 mins later* Well that explains it, thanks sir!
I don't know why but the player health being in the center bothers me so much. It just makes the whole UI look cluttered, which was my same feeling with Nioh
Knowing that the prologue boss is the hardest in the game astonishes me. I tried for about 4 hours to beat him then uninstalled the game. I've finished all the Souls and Nioh games and never had an issue like I had with this boss. Utterly frustrating. I had a lot of issues with my button presses responding slowly or not at all which made this process even more frustrating. Why would anyone put a boss like this 20 minutes into a game? Not well thought out.
People are still playing and you have completed it. 10/10 only gaming reviewer needed since you actually play and complete the game without needing the "journalist" mode on.
I like this review, I feel like it's very honest to the reviewer and their experience. Me personally when I played, the game crashes but that's about the only issue I had. It never crashed in the cutscenes and would crash during specific boss attacks or so or enemy attacks after I'd already been playing like an hour and a half. So every like hour and a half or two it would crash after like a specific attack and then I would load the game up and redo the same patterns and attacks and all of that. And I would never crash again until another hour or two in lol. Definitely definitely one of their worst optimized games. Still a great game though. Despite the PC controls lacking, I play with remote control as I always do with games like this
I won't be playing this (I can't cope with Soulsborne games at all), but I love that character creator. Good-looking characters in a video game? How novel!
It's not a souls game. Dying isn't penalizing. It's more like ninja gaiden, and flags are checkpoints. There's no stamina management. You build spirit while attacking/parrying and spend it with martial arts, magic or strong attack. Only if you spam the spenders your spirit goes in negative, but one parry and you're back on track. The game favors aggressiveness. If you're too passive, you're as good as dead.
I may have been lucky but, the only cutscene that crashed for me was the three brothers being corny. I played this on controller as well. The experience has been really fun with the 35hours I have on it so far although the gameplay loops sometimes gets at times stale. With that said, I would not recommend this game to most people unless you have a good pc, controller, like "souls-like", & are a bit of a nerd for 3 Kingdoms/Dynasty Warriors lore.
The first boss forces you to learn how to play the game and master the parry. It’s an odd choice for the first boss to require that. Though it’s the only boss in the game that will always stagger from a spirit attack. Some advice. Using the podao: 3 normals followed by the spirit attack will stunlock him into the 2nd phase which you can just focus on parrying to get past. Good luck.
The lack of sense of mass and extremely cluttered combat really hurt this game. I still play it, but not as adamantly as I would with the usual new pick up.
I assume you haven't played the Nioh series? Which is good because this a review with a different perspective of the game's system. I didn't purchased this game because of the PC issues and will probably wait for a sale. Regarding the items giving you minimal or incremental attributes / effects, I think this is by design. On the base difficulty you could probably use any build and finish the game which is similar to Nioh by not entirely relying on your equipment. The builds will ultimately shine on the later part of the NG which I assume have 5 NG levels(?). In this difficulty, there might be some items that the effects can't be gained thru the blacksmith and thus will need rely on the drops. I haven't played the game and these are all just assumptions based on Nioh's system which by the looks of it are similar in this game.
Honestly my biggest complaint so far is the Reinforcements not being optional, otherwise 8.5/10. The only problem with the loot for me is that I'd like to see more variety earlier in the game and be able to increase my items rarities. I had tier 4 armor since the second mission but couldn't get a tier 4 weapon till 8 hours into the game and it was a weapon I'd never use.
The game is good but also hella annoying. Sure, the single digit frame rate on my mid to low range pc (GFX 1050-TI) doesn't help. But I think the feeling of not seeing what's going on is also there with 60fps. Getting one-shot 3 seconds into a boss fight is certainly not my kind of entertainment.
Good lord, Mort. I got this on Friday and proceeded to spend 4 hours trying to beat the first boss (I did finally beat him so I could move on), and here you've knocked out the entire game in a few days. Also: If you DO play with a controller, it's only going to give you Playstation button prompts. I have muscle memory for PS icons so it's not a HUGE issue, but then there's the X button, which is in a different location for Xbox and PS controllers. I still haven't figured out what the Xbox equivalent of pressing the PS trackpad is that they keep showing etiher.
