As a Lifelong Laker fan I gotta say I that I don’t blame him. He’s got a good thing at UConn and The Lakers fire coaches too much. They fired Frank Vogel a year after winning a championship because they thought it’d be a good idea to get Russell Westbrook. Darvin Hamm a year after getting to the WC Finals. The Lakers front office is a mess. They broke up that last championship team on that offseason. Teams aren’t all about their tier one players. Role players are just as important as stars on championship teams. I’m just a fan and I can recognize that.

People need to realize that the pressure and perceived toxicity associated with the Lakers head coaching job was NOT the reason he turned it down. It was almost entirely based on the UConn side of things, particularly the chance of a 3 peat.

Like Woj said, Hurley is a life long east coast guy. And going out west, especially to Los Angeles, would be a challenge.

NCAA game is so different from NBA in many aspects, so to say that this offer to a coach that never coached an NBA game is not adequate is wrong. Rick Pittino, Calipari and few more "legends" of NCAA coaching did not fare well in NBA. As a Lakers fan I wish we got him, but the offer was very good in comparison to best NBA coaches.

This narrative that D. Ham should not have been fired is one of the most ridiculous things that I've ever seen on ESPN. I like Coach Ham a lot but my guy was doing a terrible job in multiple ways. JJ would absolutely be an upgrade from Ham. Several coaches would be, respectfully.

My guess is the $100 million offer speculation included incentives. Woj is apparently Hurley's publicist (the book he wrote about the Hurleys is on the wall behind him in this interview) so it is in Hurley's interest to downplay the potential money by only stating the guaranteed amount. It would have been dumb to offer an unproven NBA head coach more guaranteed money than Steve Kerr, Spo or Popovich. I re-watched the Kansas-UConn game from December (to see again what Kansas did to Hurley's offense) and Jay Bilas did his 94 Feet interview with Hurley. When asked what was his favorite accolade coming after his first national championship, Hurley said it was being awarded the key to Jersey City, because even his father didn't have that. Several other interviews I've seen had similar comments that Dan Hurley most wanted to be out of the shadow of his father and his brother. He achieved that, and I think the Lakers job was more risk than reward for him (even with the money). Just my view from the cheap seats.
