This video shows Buttermilk being brought to her new home and introduced to Lorne for the first time. It is immediately following her adoption out of 'death row' at the shelter and walking her in the front door. Lorne was brought in through the backyard moments later. They have never met before this. Not outside or through the fence. Buttermilk doesn't know me, the house, Lorne or any of the other animals who are present though do not have currently have access to the main part of the house. I thought it would be interesting to show how they (especially Lorne) handled the situation.
You can see that Buttermilk is very unsure. Lorne begins with utter excitement. He wants to play and is doing his best to initiate it. About halfway through this almost 7 minute video, you will see he already realizes his energy level is too much for Buttermilk and he begins to calm down. He starts to lose interest and investigate other things. Buttermilk then relaxes her guard a little and she is able to observe the situation without as much tension. At this point, the next time Lorne is distracted (by a slice of cake on the counter) I crate Lorne, so Buttermilk feels secure in being the one to approach on her own.
The next morning, I introduced them to the large open space of the backyard 'pen' together. And the rest of the animals. I filmed that too and will upload it as soon as I can.
I also felt that this video was important to show just how intense wolves and (most) wolfdogs are. Lorne is not always bursting at the seams with excitement to meet a new friend, but his selective hearing, high energy, intelligence, and disregard for the environment around him is always there.
Wolves and wolfdogs are destructive and can be dangerous. But they they do not mean to be- it is simply who they are. It cannot be trained, tamed, or controlled. To do that would be cruelty. You must be willing to adapt to them. They are wild animals and acceptance of that is what they deserve. They are under no obligation to follow the laws of man.

I am not being mean, but that wolf is clearly ignoring the owners commands through out and is scaring the dog. When a pet disobeys you and is intimidating the other pet, talking in English and laughing a bit isn't an adequate response as an owner.

Mad Mike Trust me friend. Although modern grey wolves are domestic dogs' closest genetic relative, the wolves that were first domesticated were not the same as the wild wolves of today. Domestic dogs and modern grey wolves have that, now extinct ancestor in common. There's a simple explanation in Wikipedia under "Origin of the domestic dog"

Buttermilk and Lorne now: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-kGPQ3AL5Pcg.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-w_bhJ_iLaZk.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-v5HdY5CJA_c.html Clearly the introduction went horribly wrong.. Look who is in charge now :) They are doing wonderful: Because I am a professional, an animal behaviorist and I know what I am doing. I would not have put Buttermilk nor the wolf in this situation had I not been able to correctly read their energy, body language, know myself, know my wolf and had already been able to assess Buttermilk's over all attitude. If something did not add up in my mind, this interaction would not have taken place this way. Like you said this video is about a year old. I'll link you to some more recent videos of Buttermilk and Lorne (the wolf) together (see above). And then the animal experts who will not read this in RU-vid Comments can see that I introduced them the optimal way, as the results resulted in.... harmony. For 15 minutes of stress vs. weeks of stressing Buttermilk out with a slow introduction, neutral territory, putting socks scented in crates. No. If you can read animals. You can do it like I did. Or you don't do it because it won't work. I can tell the difference because this is what I do. RU-vid commenters--- you cannot. As you believe that this resulted in a worsening of Buttermilk's life-- which you are quite wrong if you would observe videos that are not a year old.

I like how everyone watching the video is all of a sudden an expert. All I know about this video is that their is a wolf-like canine trying to interact with a dog-like canine and they don't exactly hit it off too well. I am happy to hear that they're both starting to be a bit more comfy with each other, though.

Goodness, people. Think a little before judging. The dog was just adopted. The very high content wolfdog (meaning: there is very little dog in it and it is genetically mostly wolf, but it has been raised in captivity like a dog) has belonged to this person for a while. True, he's not listening to his human super well, but in all fairness he's pretty distracted; wolfdogs are quite independent and many intelligent, high-energy dogs, even well-trained ones, would behave the exact same way upon a new dog being introduced in the home; plus she's not giving many direct commands, just trying to calm him a bit. The dog's unwillingness to engage in a proper introduction, while understandable given that she's just come from the pound, is only egging the wolf on- but that curiosity and energy is normal even if he wasn't a wolf. It doesn't at all mean he's a danger to the dog. He's not being aggressive or inappropriate. You'll notice, also, that his hackles being raised slightly is a non-threatening gesture in this case. Wolves are not these bloodthirsty, aggressive creatures so many still think they are. They are extremely intelligent, have highly complex social structures, and are just easily misunderstood because we haven't evolved alongside them like we have with their cousins, the dog. Also, him being kenneled is a very normal way to handle the dog of the house being excitable while allowing the newcomer to become familiar with the home (without being pestered). Dogs and wolves are den animals, so kennels are actually positive things for them if used properly. He needs to settle down, so he is put in his comfortable, calm space that belongs only to him. Kennels are a very good tool when you have a dog. They are not cruel in any way when used properly. (There are ways to use them that are abusive, but so it is with most things.)

I myself am a dog trainer and while I do respect you for owning a wolf-dog, there is certain things you are doing wrong like introducing them too fast, not controlling the situation, and letting the wolf dominate you. That will only progress. YOU need to start showing who is the alpha. The wolf-dog thinks it is the alpha. Your dog (sweet lil Buttercup) was CLEARLY in distress. You were aware of this yet you continued to document the behavior. You finally told the WOLF to "chill" after what seem an eternity to the viewers and I'm certain Buttercup as well. I was simply advocating for the animals as I found the footage disturbing and unnecessary. It wasn't informative or entertaining. I apologize if I came off abrasive. I'm very passionate about animal rights and the treatment of animals. I sincerely hope you put at least a fraction of the effort you put into your animals care and safety as you do into "youtubing". Wolves are not pets. And if the wolf or wolf hybrid is unable to be released back into the wild at least keep it outside in an open and cold environment preferably with other wolves. Your dog is obviously distressed out of his mind (tail tucked under, ears back and not to mention the obvious crying). I'm not sure why you would put your own dog through that. The wolf obviously wants to be dominant and is obviously not submissive towards you. He or she won't even listen to you. Please let the wolf live outside where it wants to be rather than be inside causing distress for the wolf and distress for the dog

@camelsandfriends
@camelsandfriends 7 лет назад
Black husky he is commonly called. No idea why. What is a black husky anyway? They are snow dogs. Environment = coloration usually. Where is this black snow I am hearing about and are these dogs living on volcanoes? Lorne's appearance aside-- his behavior is absolutely in every single way nothing like a domesticated dog. They are two different animals completely-- despite close genetic ties. There is no mistake in simply the look in his eyes. But every moment is different, down to the fact that he absolutely cannot bark at all. Communication is not present in dog language and he prefers the company of my wild dog from Egypt over the other dogs. Amazing proof of dogs and wolves trouble finding common ground-- after being the same thing-- that split on two different roads only to come back around again and find yourself has become something you don't understand-- And coyotes? Turned scavenger as we interfered more and more with canines by raising them, both dog and wolf and urbanizing the planet. And all we left for the canines in the world is a lifetime membership to the Tower of babel. ;) But simply: There are no Black Huskies. That would defeat the purpose of their breed. And Lorne is a wolf, yes. Most people can see the difference within a matter of moments if Lorne is around another dog. Most people will eventually. But the majority never will see it. No matter how much they watch. They're unable to perceive the behaviors of another species and they relate them as the same due to it. I hope you have found this post informative-- as it has gotten obviously quite long.

That dog is not trying to"greet the other dog" it immediately threw the other dog out of its territory literally. Then it established its dominance over the other dog by chasing it and sizing it up.
@BearBaylor69
@BearBaylor69 7 лет назад
Any dog or wild animal that are usually in packs do this, and yes it is how they greet. Australian Cattle Dogs, Huskies, Tamaskans, Wolves, Wolf hybrids, Coyotes, etc etc. The first thing they do is find out who the alpha is, it may look scary, it may even look violent, but the second it's over, they are family. If the smaller dog would have laid down and shown it's belly, the hybrid dog would have left it alone, instead it ran, like it wanted to challenge him or play. This is because most domesticated breeds aren't socialized, instead they usually grow up in a house being the only dog. If you take dogs that grew up in bigger packs, they would size up any new dogs as well, that's instinct, even a chihuahua would do it.

To everyone calling bullshit, I wish it was. But that is actually a wolf. Look up an image on Google and compare it if you need. A German Shepard is not that big. Look at the ears. A German Shepard has big triangle-ish ears. A wolf has small triangular ears. The wolf also isn't speaking the 'dog' language, not taking any hints that the other dog is uncomfortable. That's a wolf. Through and through.

"It is immediately following her adoption out of 'death row' at the shelter and walking her in the front door" "Buttermilk doesn't know me, the house, Lorne or any of the other animals who are present though do not have currently have access to the main part of the house. I thought it would be interesting to show how they (especially Lorne) handled the situation." I really dont think it was a good idea to introduce them right off the bat without letting Buttermilk get used to you first. If she got to know you and the place first atleast she wouldn't have been THAT scared and atleast she could have found comfort in you. She's also showing signs that shes stressed out, uncomfortable, and scared. So as much as you found it interesting to see how they handled it I don't think that was a good idea. Your dog shouldn't be used as an experiment "just to see" how it goes or how they handle it. I dont see how you talking to Buttermilk telling her whats going to calm Lorne down is of any use... In addition, once the chair fell it just created havoc and stressed her out even more with Lorne jumping everywhere. It would have been better to put the camera down, separate the two, and save the introduction for next time until your new dog had time to adjust since you didn't even giver her that. I'm not trying to bash, this is my opinion since it concerned me how your dog was clearly showing and practically telling you how she was feeling in the first introduction.

I think the whole point was to see how the dog would react in such a situation as meeting a wolf. If the dog knew the owner it would run and hide next to them and if it knew the home it would likely act somewhat more aggressive and territorial to the wolf, which is obviously not good because it's a FUCKING WOLF.

camelsandfriends I'm just referring to what I see in that video... I don't have your experience hanging out in person with Lorne... I just know him through your videos :-) . His behavior in that video with your new rescue and in some of your other videos of him is very similar to my young shepherd Lobo. Lobo is very active and has a 'lot' of prey drive (not all shepherds are drivy like he is... he comes from working lines). He has very similar mannerisms and body language to Lorne in that video. I'm not saying Lorne acts like my dog... I'm saying my young shepherd acts similar to your wolf ;-) . I was a Animal Warden for 13yrs. I've spent time around multiple wolfdog hybrids through my job and even rescued one 10 yrs back. Never been around a full wolf like Lorne. The hybrid I rescued was a 50/50 shepherd wolf cross. She was a great companion... very smart... too smart... lol. I enjoy your videos.

@camelsandfriends

+Bryan Williams Wolves (as in actual wolves not wolfdogs) are not used (if ever rarely) bred with German Shepherds. However, often people will cross dogs with some content wolf in them, which is usually low and breed that wolfdog to a German Shepherd. Because they do work well together. There are not a lot of reputable breeders who would do this though... if any. And no facility, zoo, or program would ever give someone a Wolf for this reason nor for no reason at all. They are very selectively because they are dangerous animals and have to be handled properly.

I am glad this turned out well for you, but as a dog trainer, I believe this type of introduction is more high-risk than necessary. Even if you had perfect vocal control of Lorne so you could get him to back off when Buttermilk asked for space, Buttermilk doesn't even know her name yet, and as you stated has just been through a stressful ordeal, is in an unknown place with an unknown person and an unknown animal. Add to that Lorne's interest level and that Buttermilk has nowhere she can get away from him, and if Buttermilk were ever going to bite, it would probably be under the buildup of all these stressors. As it was, the introduction caused significant stress to an already stressed dog. Why not start out with a barrier between them, outdoors where they feel free to put distance between them and nobody can get cornered, after a little more time for Buttermilk to learn to feel comfortable with you and your property? Or, if you don't have the time, at least start with Lorne crated so the new dog can decide when she is ready to sniff? It looks like some other comments from people about this have made you feel unfairly criticized, and this is not my intention. I just am worried that as you get into more rescues of dogs who have been labeled "aggressive" or who may have a bite history, you will end up with a dog who would bite Lorne in this situation, and this could easily escalate into a fight. I would hate for that to happen, and I think it could be avoided with a little extra caution during initial introductions. I don't mean to say you are doing it wrong--just that a few changes are worth considering. There is a wonderful book called The Art of Introducing Dogs that I found very useful in my work with shelter and rescue dogs. If you are interested in reading it, I will donate it to you:)
@drewmorg.
@drewmorg. 8 лет назад
Do you think putting the wolf in the crate and having the other dog approach is something the wolf would like? Could it become defensive and get really nasty inside the cage as it may feel cornered?
@crosita1
@crosita1 8 лет назад
+drewmorgan In this case, no. Watching Lorne's body language (and I admit I am reading him like a dog because that is what I know, so any wolf experts feel free to add wolf-specific ethology) all he wants is to get to check out the dog and make friends. He is clearly trained on being crated, and I saw no signs of any lack of confidence, fear, worry, or concern from Lorne. So for Lorne, as a confident and friendly animal with experience being crated, being confined as the new dog works up her courage to approach should go fine and would keep him from chasing her around to say hi before she is ready. For dog-dog intros, I prefer to do them outdoors where both are less likely to be cornered. My experience with "neutral territory" introductions has been quite mixed though, so I generally don't worry too much about that unless I know it is more effective for the dog of concern.

The context: Buttermilk was rescued from death row, and she took them in under her wing. The dogs are unsure of each other because they just met but are trying to get along aka, know each other limits. The dog is under some stress because of it's the new unfamiliar environment of a bit of everything. It's not uncommon for any animal or even people to feel this way. Wolfdogs are hard to take care of. Being tamed/trained is nearly impossible. So you have to show a form of dominance with caretaker skills. Just check the description instead of glossing over this at face value.

people, read what she said in her description. It's actually interesting, but I hope she catches up on all the energy required to raise a dog and a wolf. They both are different to handle, even if one is a wild. These animals can be incredibly and easily misunderstood. I personally think lorne should be in the wild, but because of circumstances I hope she just gets all her natural behaviours free from time to time. for those out there that thinks that wolves/wolf dogs are good pets DO NOT GET THEM unless you know what you're dealing with. a lot of half wolf/half dogs are actually left to die or forgotten once the owner realizes they can't be tamed. In some countries, it is illegal to get them.

Okay I'm no expert or anything but, that little doggo is scared, also if the wolf dog isnt listening it's not properly trained, they should listen to you atleast and you should slowly introduce them, start with a gate, and let them smell each other, let them get used to eachother, there both very anxious, and the little bean is scared and trying to get away from Laura. Start slow and maybe then let them smell and play with each other, no hate just trying to help. It's just they dont know each other and they should be slowly introduced.{sorry if this sounds rude}
