Wolfenstein is a first-person shooter video game co-developed by Raven Software, id Software, and Endrant Studios and published by Activision. It is the sequel to Return to Castle Wolfenstein, and uses the id Tech 4 engine. The game was released in 2009: in North America on August 18, Australia on August 19, and Europe on August 21.
The story is set in the fictional town of Isenstadt, which the Nazis have taken complete control of in order to mine rare Nachtsonne crystals necessary to access the "Black Sun" dimension. As the game progresses, happenings in Isenstadt become stranger (Military patrols are replaced by supernatural creatures, etc.) Locations include the town's sewers, a tavern, a hospital, a farm, an underground mining facility, a church, the SS headquarters, a dig site and caverns, a cannery, a radio station, a paranormal base, a general's home, a castle, an airfield and a large Zeppelin.

RTCW and Wolf09 are like prequels, old Blood is like wrapping up the last bit. Deathshead moving towards a more tech based military. I feel was a more natural progression. In using what supernatural tech to help build the current. Although Youngblood pulls in interdimensional travel. So who knows what will happen.

Such an underrated game. This is one the most solid shooters of the PS3/XBOX 360 generation. It pays homage to old school shooters for its exploration element, and the shooting itself is great! I really love shooting games where you really have to practice in order to get good (*coughing* notlikecallofduty *coughing*)The veil mechanics would seem like a gimmick at times, but it is actually really functional for the most part. And the graphics are amazing even for the PS3 version. When you get to the castle stage, there are some statues on both sides of the driveway, before the main entrance, just take a look at these statues and the quality of the lighting and textures used in the whole game become really apparent. This game had the misfortune of being released at a time when COD was really hot, and people would ignore other great games...

My biggest gripes with this game are as following: 1. Levels are to small for my taste. Eisenstadt, the castle, and the airfield just screamed for more areas for us to explore. 2. I wanted more levels/missions In short I just want(ed) more as I was having to much fun. The whole Indiana Jones/Hellboy atmosphere just clicked with me. Perhaps this game should have implemented the health pack/armor system as that definitely would have been much more fair during the boss battles which sometimes rely to much on chance. Still this and RTCW are my favorite parts of the Wolfenstein series, and I honestly am sad that the whole 'Secret history of WW2/action pulp comic/movie' concept was dropped for the whole 'Alternate timeline/damn depressing' concept.
@MaxRideWizardLord
@MaxRideWizardLord 5 лет назад
Also idk why GmanLives bitch about bosses, imho they are great fun, unique and provide new nethods to beat them. They are challenging because they are fucking bosses. It takes skill but nothing too hard. Implementing health/armor pickups would be extremely *terrible* for this game, especially for boss fights, because then you could just soak all the damage from the boss, instantly recover all hp by picking medkits and just be fine. For example, RTCW really did suffer from boss fights, the first boss from Crypt did ridiculoys damage on uber difficulty and didn't have much hp, so you could just finish like 2-3 mags of mp40 in about 15 second and the boss die before could do enough damage to kill you. Then Ubersoldat, which have scary tesla that impossible to dodge, but it does weak damage toward you due armor, so you could just walk at point blank to boss and rev up extremely overpowered venom gun and get easy M1 victory. The final boss, Heinrich, is a joke by itself. He doesn't have any rabged attacks, ghosts are easy to outrun, so most of the battle is just S+M1 with almost no risk of threat.

I think Wolfenstein may be my favorite series of fps ever. I love how each installment is made by a different studio, and has that fresh feel to it. It's really close, but for me I think Wolfenstein (2009) edges out Return to Castle Wolfenstein for me. I've played through both of them an embarrassing number of times, but I think its the weapons in this one that really sell it for me. I haven't had as much sheer fun with the guns in this game (in particular the particle cannon and liechenfaust 44), since the BFG9000 in the original Doom.
@MaxRideWizardLord
@MaxRideWizardLord 5 лет назад
Tesla cannon alone is probably the most hardcore coded thing in videp game history. I've never seen lightning behave anywhere as vivid, deep, fluid, smooth and realistic than in this game of all games made till this day, and youngblood's elekrokraftwerk sucks a big ass, it's shoot straight laser like "lightning" and act as average bullet rifle gun, with no lightning that automatically seek all the targets in the vision.

This game was wonderful. The MP40 is one of the best feeling guns I've ever used in a game and the art style's use of attractive color contrasts is on the level of Bioshock. I like some of the Nazi quotes from the cutscenes in this game, real menacing and sometimes cleverly written, too...at least in my opinion. I even like the graphic novel it had prior to release which tells the events of W3D, SoD, RtCW and W2009 in W2009's style. I'm surprised you gave this a positive review despite the start claiming it was a rant of sorts.

I never had problems with the bosses in this game. Its actually one of my favorite games of the late 2000s for that matter. I remember randomly buying it new when I was 20 in 2009 with some birthday money I got in college. I have probably replayed this game more than any other game from this era, maybe even bioshock 1. I never did like regenerating hp, and of course I fully exploit what ever tool they give us, so I of course at times did take full advantage of the regenerating health... Graphically I would say its pretty darn good for the time period, especially considering it was on the 5 year old at the time doom 3 engine. Sure it was not no crysis from 2 years prior, but it was still pretty good compared to most games I played from that era graphically. The hardest fight of the whole game, was probably fighting the Hans Grosse phase 2, where it was still highly possible, but you had to use a lot of trial and era to find out where to run safely with the regen pools. After maybe my 3rd play through in the early 2010s I had that fight down to where I could beat phase 2 within reasonable time. It is truly a shame this game did not get any love and is no longer for sale anywhere. I especially hate what machine games, makers of the new order said about it. Coming from the same incompetent developers that brought the awful wolfenstein the new colossus and tag teamed with good studio arkane to release the equally awful young blood.

The Isenstadt hub was a weak point of the game for me. Although you have a compass, it is not easy to find the route there since many doors cannot be opened which is not indicated by a visual marker. I frequently had to spend lots of time in path finding. Also often you have to go from one side to the other to pick up a mission and again you spend time in the city.

The shooting mechanics and hub level structure of this game are awesome. It's like Raven took the best elements of Soldier of Fortune and hexen and put them together. I just wish they held off the super natural and Mad science stuff until a bit later in the game like the original Wofenstein 3D. Also it is missing the pistol and chaingun, two of the classic weapons. The final battle with Hans Grosse was anti-climatic as well.

There's one thing I can't understand is what is causing the huge drop in gamers' intelligence? Why are gamers today so much dumber than gamers were a decade ago? I mean it's gotten so bad that they can't even remember how to play a game without being told what button to press every step of the way. I would have thought that it would take actual brain damage to not be able to remember what key you pressed to interact with objects the last thirty times, but apparently even supposedly normal people today can't make such persistent memories. If this trend continues, a decade from now they will have to put a big *SHOOT HERE* sign over every enemy's head and constantly flash *Press UP to Move* on the screen, or nobody will know what to do! Doesn't it alarm anyone else that people today can't even remember a couple simple key commands to interact with a game? These poor people must have their homes covered in Post-It notes reminding them how to do common, every day activities like opening doors or turning on a light. The government should really look into this before our collective intelligence levels drop too low for us to even remember how to breathe. I'm just glad that video games exist to point out this serious problem!

This game had some solid levels. Loved the farm with the facility underneath. The boss fights sucked and it got ridiculous at the end.

I don't get why everyone said not to play this game when it came out (reviews was basically what people naively trusted back in the day before LP's became the BIG THING on YT). Turns out the game is quite fun, and has a few mods made to improve the SP without even needing an SDK to do it.

Probably my favorite Wolf title, tbh. It's the only one I could actually beat (twice, both on console and PC) and I still yell out "FOR ISENSTADT!" from time to time when the situation calls for it, and no one knows what I mean.

This game really deserved better sales and ratings than it got. I totally enjoyed it from beginning to end, though I do agree with the boss fights sucking. It is a shame you can't get this game on Steam these days, as I have long since lost my copy of the game. I still prefer RTCW too but this game is far from bad, I kinda feel for the devs who were probably feeling deflated by shitty sales and reviews, as they really didn't do a bad job with this game

I’m not entirely certain where this game sits with the proverbial crowd of Wolfenstein players. But personally for me I feel this game is highly overlooked and underappreciated. It’s not perfect, (but what property is?) but especially around this time when this game was released 2009 that is, it stood out on its own when every game started trying to become a call of duty clone.

No. Its not clear who holds the rights for the game. Activision did but Bethesda acquired the franchise so actually Bethesda should own the game now. Wouldnt mind them to re-release it. Maybe remastered but probably not worth the trouble...

During the release of this game, ZeniMax Media (the parent company of Bethesda and Arkane) brought ID along with it's IPs. Due to complications of transferral rights, this game unfortunately was left behind (sorry for my english, i'm spanish)

Just (almost) finished it on max difficulty and have few things to say. Generally - the game is great, underrrated rough gem with a lot of cool ideas, great lvls, great number of wastly different weapons and enemies to play with. Downsides? They tried to push a lot in it. Hub system, pseudo-magic of Thule Medalion, meaningful gold fathering, a motherload of upgrades, etc. Not all of it woks as good as they could. Gold gathering motivates you to waste a lot of time not on actual shooting but on looting. Not a problem for me but most of shooter-players I knodon't like things like that. Hub provides a lot of randomly-generated fights, but at times it feels like a complete filler waste of time when you really want to get to actual missions. It is also big and you have to run circles around it from one mission to the other. Random fights could be anything from actually interesting and challenging skirmishes with elite enemies to complete curbstomp of few regulars or even an absence of enemies in certain areas. It leads to hub sometimes becoming a time waste. Also, Downtown area have horrible Black Market placement far from any other object of interests in that location, which forces you to run all the way to its beginning. Powers and weapons, as well as enemies and AI in general are anything but balanced. First of all - AI in this game is outright stupid. I caught it many times grenading itself, running randomly and generally doing jack shit to hurt you. Most of enemies are also not aggressive enough and AI likes to overuse cover and with your Empower upgrades that negates almost all cover it makes enemies sitting ducks. Giving that the best chance of most enemies is to overwhelm you with numbers and firepower, them spending most of time covering and failing to advance makes almost every fight a cakewalk where you can just fall back, regenerate, rearm and re-engage them. AI is too easy to abuse. Weapons are actually fun to use, but have balancing issue. You know what weapon have the most usability in game? Fully upgraded MP43. Why? It has by far the biggest ammo pool, in latter chapters its ammo is the most common (or second most common after MP40), it works on any range and under fully upraged Empower buff it has the highest DPS that goes through shields, covers and even walls. Pair it with one of the Veil upgrades that makes you see enemies through walls. And enemies are prone to overuse cover. And they do not take Empower into account, making almost any cover a death-trap for them. Yes, it is as overpowered as it sounds. All of the above means that you have little to no reason to use any weapon and any power except MP43+Empower. Special weapons suffer from either not being buffed by Empower or not gaining cover-piercing from it. Many of them have issues on longer ranges either by firing projectiles or having limited range. And things like Flamethrower and Parcticle cannon have ludicrous damage output that is overkill against regular foes but do not do enough or even zero damage against many elites. Meaning that you have better chances of buffing your MP43. Also, many upgrades are either waste of money or gimmicky. Why would you require a buff on melee damage on Tesla, that is by far the best choice for close quarters anyway and stunlocks regular foes? Why spend 3000 on buffing grenade damage and another 2000 on buffing ammo pool from 3 to 6? You can do most of upgrades on your rocket launcher for less. You can do most of upgrades on Leichenfaust, which is the most powerful weapon in game, for less. Why would you need a bayonet for better melee on your sniper rifle? Why buff damage of Flamethrower if it insta-kills regulars, near insta-kills lighter elites and deals no damage to heavy elites? Taking into account all of the above, I found this game laughably easy even on highest difficulty. It is really easy to abuse its mechanics and AI. Most of those downsides are twikable, however. I hope that we will one day have a mod like RealRTCW but for Wolfenstein 2009 instead of RTCW, which would make this already good game a great one.

I love this game and it was actually my first in the series (though I did go back and play the other amazing game), however I will admit I also agree with the fans that it would have been better without the regenerating health. However regenerating health aside, it was very close to a true next gen corridor shooter done right, like Resistance 1 and 3 or hopefully what the next wolfenstien is. So considering there isn't a lot of other options for that superior older school corridor shooter, I've got to say the health regen is a bit forgivable as the experience is far better than the average linear FPS.

In general Wolfenstein 09 was faithful sequel to RTCW but devs tried too hard to make you feel unstoppable killing machine. In RTCW when supersoldiers appeared it was still fight for life despite you already obtained Venom, rocket launcher etc. And here all cool weapon roster is useless because 99 percent of time you fight regular nazis and all super weapons vaporizes them in a single hit. Tesla gun was especially ridiculously overpowered yet fun. Open world and side missions was a mistake they shouldn't change perfect RTCW pacing. Game is still great by the time it was released, no 2 weapons limit, treasure hunting finally have some purpose, level design is good too

I actually really enjoyed this game. Is it a masterpiece, not really but its a blast to play and I got a solid 20+ hours of looking around and just exploring the city. My favorite part was doing headshots with the rifle made nazi heads pop off, I could not get tired of that and it was my most used weapon. Plus with a silencer you could get some rare moments of stealth before an all out gun fest. I got the game for like $7 and at that price its a no brainer, I'd really recommend getting it, it an actually fun shooter.
