Wolff Responds: Great Replacement Theory - A Critique

In this Wolff Responds, Prof. Wolff critiques the “Great Replacement” Theory that is becoming more mainstream in right-wing ideology. Wolff argues that Republicans are partially correct-there has been a replacement-but they have the wrong targets. Since the 1970s, capitalists have been replacing expensive white, christian male workers in order to maximize profits by automating, moving production overseas, and exploiting immigrant workers. The right-wing, in order to protect capitalism, have made immigrants, women, people of color, and any minority group into scapegoats for white Americans’ anger. Both Democrats and Republicans need to stand up against capitalist interests and speak out about what’s really going on.

Proff Wolff, hits the nail right on the head. In high tech, the H-1b was used to supercharge immigration to replace us, but he's absolutely correct, they have moved to using labor abroad, more than the H-1b now. Labor abroad is even cheaper. We now add employees from abroad, more rapidly than hire H-1bs.

He's using a straw man to prop up his argument. He is correct that the republican party is controlled opposition, one meant to act as a pressure relief valve to ensure that their electorate don't actually find a political movement that would actually work on their behalf. It's amazing how short peoples memories can be. I was born in 1980. I've watched my society do nothing but regress. Going through the old town (while always depressing) has do nothing but decay. We have been cutting taxes and deregulating for the 41 years that I have spent in this horrible world. Now I cannot stand to act in accordance with my society under these conditions. Then I get to absorb the blame for my perpetual state of impoverishment. Every time some maggot minded pragmatist blames a kid for living with their folks forever ignoring the social dynamic which hasn't changed in greater than 41 years. My peers are killing themselves by falling in line. I'm blessed to have a good family (good in the sense of the opposite of evil). So I happen to know that "tough love" isn't love at all. The true nature of love is to give not to take. And loveless abuse this nature. My life is over. Thank you for doing what you can to fight the evil tide Prof. Wolff. I wish I could kick something to you because I've watched you videos for years. And I think it good for people to become enlightened. But I'm a white, working poor, nonreligious pantheist . . . not that my race or theism isn't the issue. It's because I'm not ever going to do what they want of me again. Time is life. And I've already sold too much of it to people whom never appreciated it. Godspeed Dr. Wolff.

When Fiorina took over HP, I saw the writing on the wall and moved on. The person who replaced me was replaced by someone in India for 2% of my old salary. HP was a great company and a great company to work for. It made superior products and paid its employees well while it made substantial profits. After that "Great Replacement", it made garbage products with a demoralized workforce and huge profits. When I started working for them it was almost impossible to get in because everyone worked there forever and they did their jobs better than anyone else in the industry. Within a couple years after I left, everyone worked there for a year or two as a temp/contractor before the next subcontractor fired everyone, and no one cared how they did their job.

When the goal is simply profit, the people who do the work are inconsequential. We have been sold on a fantasy system where the business itself is meaningless. One of the deepest ironies of US capitalism is that they have only focused on crushing wages and not even though of the cost of living in the US. Don’t forget the worst offender of all, Transportation. Your locked into your car, you need it to work and live. Insurance, registration, taxes, loans, fuel, repairs. tens of thousands a year down the drain to operate a death trap that chokes our cities and makes suburban “life” a desert - not a child in sight, nobody playing, nobody living, just rows of identical housing and a 30 min drive (3.2 hour walk) to the nearest grocer or farmers market.
@jimcrelm9478
@jimcrelm9478 2 года назад
Education and housing got more expensive not because they got better quality, or became more expensive to produce. No, they got more expensive because of debt and surplus capital, two sides of the same coin. Prices are what the market will bear, what people can borrow, not what a fair price would be or what they cost fundamentally to provide. Even Adam Smith didn't regard land as a legitimate commodity. Healthcare costs, which are among the highest in the world often for poor outcomes, are another symptom of rentier capitalism and of markets which do not serve the people; also of financialisation and ever-growing debt. In other words, prices simply max out our ability to pay, with little relation to the actual costs of production of goods and services, if those costs are all traced back to actual tangible work.

I want to be clear, this is an EMPLOYER problem not a worker problem. The failure of the labor movement to incorporate immigrants has allowed employers to essentially take exploitation to its furthest tolerable limits while pitting workers against each other using racism and xenophobia as two of thier main offensive weapons against the working class.

3:17 Well...someone is requiring them to do it: the consumer. Why do anti-capitalists consistently miss the single most imporant actor in the free market? It's the consumer making companies drive down costs. And it's not for profit. The average profit margin is 3%, and in any given year across time, about 1/3 of companies operate at a loss. It's the consumer making the companies do it. The consumer is king!
@thekaxmax
@thekaxmax 2 года назад
Garbage. The consumer pays the price the corps charge, because most of them are monopolies or close to it--and when they aren't they collude on prices. If the consumer was in charge the profit margin on car fuel would be 1%, not what it actually is, and it'd cost 2/3 what it does now worldwide.

Great piece on American politics, I would retort though that the "great replacement theory" was actually made for the European stage. What is happening in Europe is that the ancient population of Europe who have lived there since the dawn of time are being ethnically replaced in their homelands by overwhelming waves of mass immigration from Africa and the Middle East. Take the UK as an example....in 1950 London was over 98% white native, a city which can trace its roots and people back at LEAST 1500 years and is now only 35% white British. The same is true for most major cities in England, the native population has been REPLACED by the non native immigrant population from the middle east mainly. This has happened in a shockingly fast time frame, essentially 20 years and if trends continue as they are its highly likely that the native white Brit will be a minority on their own island by 2040. I would argue this has nothing to do with "capitalism" and that there is another force at work here.

I don't know how relevant "white" and "male" are. Sex and racial equality has existed for decades now. Jews and Asians make more money than whites, and females make at least as much money as men before they drop out of the workforce to have babies. Immigration absolutely drags down wages, which is why corporations and business love it. You should also take about it from a government perspective. Governments love it from an economic perspective as well. An immigrant comes in, usually, at working age (and often leave when they retire)-- whereas people born here have to be supported for 18 years before they start contributing.

There is good truth here. However, it is only part of the truth. Since we have a consumption-driven economy, money is not simply made by cutting costs (that is one piece), but also by increasing consumption. One of the intentions of the mass immigration in the West is to keep the economies propped up with more and more and MORE consumption. The more people that are brought in, the MORE consumption is had. It's just simple numbers. The third point is that just because some people have a profit motive (which is true), it doesn't mean that there aren't other people with a hatred motive that share the same goals. With all of the blatant, anti-white propaganda being spread the past five years in common culture -- in particular the news media, it is hard to believe that people can't see an agenda. (Some like to keep their heads in the sand? Too controversial? Not enough courage 7:41?) And the fact is, many who comprise "The Capitalists" -- as Prof. Wolff calls them -- have a 2,000 year old grudge that dates back to Titus, and this is openly admitted if anyone is willing to look. We see just as much of this "replacement" in quasi-socialist countries in Europe where, in many cases, the "replacements" are not even put to work, but just put on government assistance, so they're not even undercutting labor costs. Either way, anyone who supports policies of mass immigration while knowing that it puts downward pressure on wages while increasing the cost of housing is basically a tool of "The Capitalists". So if you're not supporting immigration restrictionists, you're on their side, and you're working for their goals. And this is what it means to say that we don't have a nation: "the elite" view the country as just one big giant shopping mall, not a nation of people with which they share kinship. And they extract the wealth of the country (both resources and public treasury) until it collapses, then they get on their jets and fly to live in some other country. Because they don't identify as American -- or in the case of Europe, they don't identify as Swedish or British or German -- and they have no bonds of brotherhood to the people.

What??? Blame the immigrants for knowingly and intentionally coming here and taking the jobs of American citizens (incredibly egocentric and selfish) AND blame the employers. It's not really an either or. They're both part of the equation; and both choose to be part of the equation. And if you stop immigrants from entering the US, you stop the employers from hiring them. It's either that, or the US implement a policy of hiring American citizens first or otherwise stop employers from hiring immigrants. But the chance of government willingly controlling/legislating companies is much slimmer. (I mean look at how useless Biden has been on every single front. He's done absolutely zilch.)
