A couple of years back, on one of his Democracy at Work talks, Prof Wolff said "The Sickness is in the System" he wasn't joking, was he 🤔, he was serious!
Indeed. Everything spot on. Only criticism, he can say "... empire of the United States of America is over ...", because to say 'American empire" also includes all of Central, South, and North America as well" Otherwise, Prof Wolff always teaches us so well and so much.
Enjoyable, as usual. But the professor only gets to the point halfway thru the show, so fast-forward to the midway point before you start watching. He also conflates growth of GNP with "great news for the individual citizen." He praises GNP growth in places like China's and compares it to our weaker growth. Yes, China's GNP is huge and growing fast, but with a population at least 3 times as big as ours, China has a GNP per-person that is still close to third-rate. Same goes for India. I would also question the professor's feeling that we have just about lost our influence in the world because of our comparative economic decline (I'm not summarizing his position very well here, I admit). Other countries, eg in Europe (where I lived for fifteen years), have never admired us and chosen to follow our lead just because we're rich. They actually admire various aspects of our cultural and political life that lie outside the realm of sheer economics. Naturally, they wisely detest other parts of our culture, like economic insecurity and inequality. But our declining economic advantage is not what's lessening our influence on the world. It would take thousands of words to elucidate the actual causes of our declining influence, but I wouldn't pin it on our economic woes as much as the professor appears to do.
Extreme rhetoric is in lieu of legislative performance. The less you do in office demands your voice appear more apoplectic. Veins bulging, red facening, spittle flying, arms flailing. All as theatre; asking permission of the audience to 'other' some non-represented group.
No, professor. Our problem isn't resentment of other nations' economic rivalry. Their growing wealth would mean more sumptuous markets, and cheaper imports, which would benefit everyone, as economists have been telling us for several hundred years. But he wealth of China has generated a vast military expansion & real threat to a peaceful world order that dwarfs Putin's. Ignoring this is like the willful blindness to Hitler's similar expansion in the 1930s. Isolationism and appeasement didn't work then and it won't end the Chinese Führer's dream of expanding the CCP model world-wide. Prudent responses are neither cause nor result of our political division.

What happened to American for folks to feel USA is not great. Gradually Americans start branching out to other countries and making friends as their life improved due to our great economy. We invited other countries to come to our country we shared different technologies cultural experience and religious beliefs and adopted new ideas to our lives. However there are those who still struggle and got left behind not only in America in other places as well. A great migration took place this was unforseen by our government they were to focus on race and greed . The effect is what we have today immigration issues US has allowed the countries to catch up and surpassed us and there are those who are left behind. . MAGA
having lived through it, 1979 the year i graduated highschool the mid west manufacturing was gutted and sent to China. Wrecked whole cities and states. 1993 tech recession and all tech jobs went India. Repubs corporations wanted it for profits and the dems wanted it to raise up others and spread the wealth globally. For last 20 years endless flow of Mexicans have wiped out skilled trades for Americans. At every turn this gov has total screwed its citizens. Before it turned on its own it exploited africans and american indians. Its never been a nice place. The gov uses recessions to transition, so if one comes watch out. 2008 recession took away corporate pensions.
