Tom Orzechowski is an under appreciated legend, he designed the logo for several titles such as Wolverine and New Mutants. Plus his run on Spawn is impressive!

Pick this up at a flea market back in 92 and was so happy I got my first #1. I sincerely hope that after Fall of X, Wolverine can go back to being the small time detective of the X-men. It reminds me a lot of Batman's role Justice league. Edit: Also please please, if you look at more wolverine stuff please cover issues 51-53 The Crunch Conundrum. It's Hama and Kubert firing on all cylinders.

It’s Silvestri, Kubert came later. 😊

man, it blows me away how much comics knowledge you guys have! i love hearing about all of these creatives that i never paid attention to. i don't think i ever really appreciated the contributions of letterers and colorists much when reading these books. i was mostly focused on who was pencilling issues and sometimes who was inking. Silverstri's run on Wolverine is some of my favorite comics art ever, and you guys are totally right that he was channeling Buscema back in those days! i don't think i've really seen much of Buscema's comics work outside of How To Draw Comics the Marvel Way.

The first few Marvel Comics Presents issues starred Wolverine. I think those stories lead into the actual Wolverine title. Some of those issues are John Buscema, inked by Klaus Janson. Really great pages.

That’s such a good observation about Orzechowski being the glue. I had never thought about that before.

I don't know who it was who explained it - within the comic's universe - with "Look, if an ultraviolent berserk with knives for hands says 'My name is Patch now, and you don't know me', you call him Patch and pretend you don't know him!"

I'm so glad you said silvestri! I was looking at silvestri and thinking "... this kinda reminds me of that buscema stuff from wolverine". Buscema has that kinda loose feel but the foundation is super solid, and williamson complements that

Pretty sure the net on the plane is supposed to be camo netting to hide it from being found. Lol. Awesome video, thanks!

I collected all of these as they came out and it all seemed like the movie, Casablanca, expanded...and starring Wolverine...and if I remember correctly the appearance of Jessica Drew, private eye, as well as grey Hulk! Buscema and Williamson just make a good, FUN, story, incredible!

Try talking to Bret Blevins. He shared a studio with Williamson during this period, even helped with some pages according to Bill Wray.

Al Williamson did some nice ink on Curt Swan /Superman in the mid 80’s,DC Presents with Alan Moore and Rick Veitch and at Marvel , Spider Man 2099 inks on Rick Leonardi ! Someone needs to do a tabletop art book on Big John Buscema! Both formidable talents that elevate all that they do together or separate!⚡️🎯Keep reading and making comix!⚡️👍

I had the same feeling... But they did a video on Wolevrine 10 (that I just rewatched), with the Kent Williams back cover that Jim mentions; maybe that is why...

You’re not crazy. This is a repost, but John Buscema is worth a rewatch.

@@miguelmoreira8056 I think it was definitely this one, I remember many of the comments that Ed and Jim make, it came out a few months ago I think, but it is a good one so why not?

This comic was so full of weird choices when it came out. I had been a comic fiend for 6 years and Wolverine was a favorite character, but I was baffled when I picked this issue up. The Patch & Madripor stuff had not been set up. Wolverine's new look had not been set up. Buscema is one of my favorite artists but this was such a departure from the X-Men model that it felt ugly. I didn't even pick up issue #2, and along with aging-out, it contributed to me taking a break from comics in general. I did go back and read the series with the Essentials collections and it's got a lot of great stories, but a strange launch.

Jim, Ed, if you guys picked up the free comic book day comics of 2023, please do a video on that Conan the Barbarian by Rob de la Torre. It's not Buscema, but it's... It's very much Buscema!

I once heard that in SE Asia some of the locals work the tourist trade would go out and be pirates on their off time. Not sure about more Buscema/Williamson comics, but Al Williamson inked the first two issue of New Warriors. There's a big contrast between those first two issues and the later issues inked by Larry Mahlstedt. I saw this series on the spinner racks when it came out, but it really wasn't my thing. Now I'm kicking myself over not getting it.

Do we have to murder anyone to convince you guys to do an episode on the Marc Silvestri run in the Wolverine #40's and #50's?

It's been a long time since I saw this comic. I thought the art was horrible back then, and haven't changed my opinion. Wolverine altnerates between looking fully Asian (e.g. the first reveal) and an orangutan (e.g. bottom left panel on second page at 12:30). The story was silly, too, including the fictional location, which was a very transparent device to try to isolate the story from any X-men storylines. I couldn't help imagining Wolverine ducking out of whatever events were happening with the X-Men, hopping on a plane and partaking in this weird cosplay, then jumping back on a red-eye flight back to the X-Men. Just goofy.

Interesting that this was a memorable first for many. For me it was my introduction to Wolverine and a great inspiration to do comics. I hunted down the paperback version years later and it's cool but it does have the notorious paperback colour problems. The drawing at 12:16 that Jim thought looked cool definitely didn't translate well. Even still this story and Weapon X are two of my wolverine favs.

Marvel Comics Presents 1-10, Klaus Janson inking over John Buscema

I always thought that crosshatching on his eyes was supposed to be a shadow. I was about 16 when this came out and thought it was silly and bad then. I love Buscema and Williamson, but the Wolverine solo comic was not good.
