A woman in Long Island, N.Y., says she gave up her kidney to help safe her boss, but was fired soon after. Jim Axelrod reports, she is now taking on her former employer.
@@bc1969214 selling cars doesn’t mean not having empathy. It’s like selling houses, clothing, or anything else. You’re there to HELP people but also to direct someone to buy your product. The stereotypes for car salespeople amazes me.
she would be on the payroll even if she just swept the lot and same pay as before. Call off whenever you need to. I understand and thanks for everything.
Truth hurts, but her going out of her way for her boss doesn’t and shouldn’t give special treatment, as that is illegal. Seemingly firing her for no reason right after? Kinda seems intentional.
@@heroesofthestormmurky3092 In a privately owned company you are allowed to give special treatment, like making your kid a VP. In this case, the woman was recovering from saving the boss's life. To fire her for missing too many days? Take the days off in context of "I would be dead and she'd be 100% well otherwise." Keeping her in her job would not be special treatment, but what would (what should be done) is make sure her medical bills are covered, that she gets a raise, that the next opening goes to one of her kids if they need a job, and throwing $10k into her retirement fund as many years as you can afford it.
Being nice is not about having it be reciprocated, we are nice to reflect our better selves period. How people treat you is their karma, how you react is yours.
I know especially when there are so many different ways that she could've been accommodated. She could be assigned to work from home if she needed to stay home to deal with complications from her surgery. She could be given lighter working assignments. She could also be put on reduced pay or a different pay structure but more accommodation to her other needs. Her life is already hard enough as a divorced single mother with 2 kids and now she just lost a healthy kidney.
She didn't ask for a promotion, she didn't asked for millions b4 the lawsuit. She was just recovering and carrying on but instead the boss was scared she's gonna owe her savior favors for the rest of her life. Which she should btw.
She saved her life on so many different levels. At least she should have retired her earlly if she didn’t want her around. Not like she couldn’t afford it.
I donated my kidney to a stranger. I did not meet recipient until day of surgery. I was 23 years old and healing was HELL. SO PAINFUL! I don't take pain meds (addiction runs in my family) and for 6 weeks you're not able to lift over 10 pounds. My doctor told me the recipient heals faster when it's successful because they get something they needed, and the donor loses something they didn't need to lose. Her boss really was wrong and so frustrating to hear this.
@@LMAOINMEMPHISthey did say that addiction runs in the family so ied guess they were worried that they may get addicted to the meds. On a personal note from someone that’s actually on pain meds and has addiction that runs in the family it’s not as big a problem as you think especially if your worried about it, but I’m also in a situation where it dosnt matter if I do get addicted as I will need pain meds for the rest of my life unless I want to be in so much pain I can’t move or if we invent a way to replace my nervous system which isn’t happening any time soon😢
NEVER EVER EVER help your bosses. They're not your friends. Edit: Unless they need toilet paper. But other people have body parts too. But I mean, if I gave my boss a kidney and they fired me because I took a day off I would say good riddance. Give me my kidney back!
Several years ago, my cousin received a kidney from her oldest sister. I remember the middle sister found some kind of funding for people who get kidney surgery (they have money for everything). She got the money, but didn't share it with the sister who gave her the kidney. Fast forward to now...that kidney is failing. This boss better be careful. Kidneys can fail you at any given time.
"people are going to think you're getting special treatment" she kinda should be getting special treatment she cut out an organ and gave it to you. There are not a whole lot of employees out there that would do that.
Giving your boss an organ is pretty special treatment. She had no business accepting organ donations from her employees, if she was ethically opposed to special treatment. I don’t like to believe there are bad people, but this boss is really trying to prove me wrong.
@@Kmbstitches yep, people have offered me their kidneys since both of mine are at stage 3 ckd. I find it so nice but I physically could never ask anyone something that big and if someone did I’d truly be great full to them for the rest of my life especially since complications could come to both parties. I’ve heard of people getting organs and a couple years later their body rejects the organ despite things going well in the beginning 🥲 then there’s the person who’s literally putting their life on the line so yours can last longer, that’s a HUGE commitment for both parties. I’m baffled she didn’t show more gratitude, even if it’s fake. Like come on. I hope this ladies kidney rejects because she did not deserve it and I hope this kind woman found a way better job and won the law suit
Most who donate a body part to help another don't expect anything in return. However, to be fired resulting from damage to her body related to that very selfless act of a donation is beyond evil...
I agree. Even if the boss didn't say very many thanks, it seems like she didn't have such a big problem with it. But to not acknowledge a medical problem and reasonable cause for her limitations, and then firing her on top of that... ridiculous.
the employee didn't expect anything in return, but didn't expect a cold shoulder or to be booted either. the boss has no empathy and is unable to feel such normal human emotions.
This lady was incredibly generous, in my 25 years of working I've never come across a boss that would be deserving of my kidney, not one. I would only give up a kidney for a family member or a very good friend.
She won the lawsuit. This case had several layers to it. One layer was that the boss seems to have been an alcoholic, which is why she had kidney problems. The case gained attention, so the media started following the boss and caught he with bottles of liquor after she got her kidney. The reason being an alcoholic matters to me is because I know alcoholics and they are super hard to deal with sober, so I could just imagine what she was dealing with from a boss that was not able to drink. The first job I ever had was at Burger King years ago, and the boss was an alcoholic. For some reason she hated me. I remember one day I was on break with a bunch of other people and we were all eating our free meal, and for some reason she comes out screaming about me not being allowed to eat for free, but never said anything about the others. She docked my pay for a meal that was free. True story, I got her to quit hating me by selling her weed. One day she did not know I was outside the door and she said something about needing a joint, and from that day forward she called me everyday before work to see if I would sell her some weed. It was like she went from being super mean for no reason at all, to depending on me for weed, and she never talked rude again to me.
@@ladydara7446 You are not ineligible of getting a transplant, it is just recommended you do not drink, which I pointed out that the woman was not able to drink at the time because she was getting a kidney. Alcoholism is one of the major reason people get transplants, and you cannot ban someone from getting a transplant. The worries are more on the side of the donator, cause you do not ant someone donating a diseased organ.
She got Justice. Debbie sued for 14 million and got an undisclosed settlement in 2014. (This usually means somewhere in the millions) she got the last laugh!!
That's insane. You don't have to kiss the ground she walked on for doing the kind act, but at least show better appreciation than that. The boss is a work of art and has a special place you know where. lol
"No good deed goes unpunished." a phrase that is unfortunately alive and well, especially in todays age of social media and the increase of individualism and narcissism.
This video inspired me to work for myself and never ever give my all to an ungrateful employer. Literally a formative part of my life. I'm 27 now and doing well.
To everyone saying that they would ask for the kidney back lol she didn’t give her kidney directly to her boss. Her boss was involved in a kidney donation group where you have to give a kidney to get a kidney. This lady wasn’t a match for her boss so she couldn’t give it directly to her so this lady donated to someone else on her bosses behalf because you have to “give a kidey to get a kidney.” So this lady‘s kidney donation actually went to someone else and then her boss was able to get a kidney from another person who was a perfect match. Still, the boss is an ungrateful bitch.
That feels like even more of a sacrifice. It’s not like her kidney was a perfect match so she gave it to her, it was like “I’m gonna give up my kidney so you can get one” 😯! What a horrible human being that boss is!
"Look people are going to think I'm giving you special treatment" Dipshit people are going to think that anyhow. Besides it's a fucking car dealership not the presidency the politics of the place aren't anywhere near that important. "Sounds like a personal problem"
I know the feeling about not doing more for your boss. I used to work a lot of hours for my boss. Walked in a blizzard to get to work. Came to work when ever someone called off. When my mom died, my boss made me come to work. Instead of giving me bereavement pay, she used my PTO to pay me for the time that I had to take off to bury her in another state. If I was her boss, I would have gave her special treatment for life. She would have multiple vacations, better pay, a promotion, a new car...anything for saving my life. I wouldn't even care if she started slacking off on the job. I would be so grateful for her saving my life.
Update for anyone wondering. The court found that she had been discriminated against and unjustly terminated. Seeking around 15 million $ in damages the pathetic excuses for a piece of dirt boss and the joke of a business settles for an undisclosed amount out of court, furthermore people destroyed the business reviews online. They got the smack down and lost a ton of $$$
Awesome! Just as it should be. I mean the woman helped you get a kidney! Do you know how many people in this world are waiting for one! Died because they didn't get one?! If I was her boss, I'd of rolled out the fucking red carpet!
Not true. My mom's old boss was one of her very best friends. When my stepdad fell ill with liver disease and she became his caretaker he insisted on continuing to pay her, even after they moved across the country. Even though his business couldn't afford it. And despite my mom's protestations. Humans are humans. Some are awful and some are amazing.
I would’ve taken my kidney back with bare hands & a butter knife. Later on feed that to a dog cause they are more faithful as well as grateful than human beings.
What a horrible experience. I hope she's found some justice in the court system and some healing so that she can move on. And I hope her health has recovered. It's sadly a lesson for people considering being a donor. Her ex-boss not only hurt this generous and kind woman, she hurt a lot of people who need organs and depend on this same type of kindness. Other people won't do it because of what she did.
@@jonathanmercado9965 I mean call it what you want I wouldn’t say it’s stupid, people being willing enough to be “stupid” is the whole reason multiple people are alive today...

@@schadenfreude5287 I think donating a fucking organ is a bit more than "brown nosing". Clearly this was a nice women who did an incredibly kind act and got screwed over.
And how do you know the only reason she donated her kidney to that lady was because she’s her boss? Maybe she donated out of the goodness of her own heart and simply wanted to help out another human being she knew in need? Not every good deed needs to be seen as being done out of special interest you know
Just trying to figure out why the reporter who open the storyline at the very beginning of this video started off with a laugh with beginning the opening of this sad story? 🤔🤔🤔
Well, she didn't give her kidney to her boss. She donated it on behalf of her boss to move her up the wait list. Hopefully someone much kinder received her kidney.
The more you do for some people, the more they expect from you and the less they appreciate your kindness. Not everyone is that way, though, thank God.
God gave you your kidneys. You are not obligated to give one to anybody. I have given people my last dime because I knew I was still earning money. I can replace my money, but.....

@David Davidson exactly who are you talking to? I just made a statement of what might happen. People like you need to understand is that perception matters when it comes to bussiness. NEVER said what is right or wrong.
@David Davidson checked to see what was up with the caes and found this, Following legal action, the New York State Division on Human Rights has ruled that Debbie was indeed unjustly fired by the Atlantic Motor Group following her kidney donation. The Division on Human Rights further said that there was probable cause that Debbie had been fired due to discrimination. Debbie is now seeking $15 million in damages from both the Atlantic Motor Group as well as from Jackie.
You mean to tell me a successful employer doesn't have family or friends that could have helped her? That alone would tell me about her true character.
LIVEFRMNYC ---- You can"t donate to someone if you're not a perfect match!!! If it was THAT easy....there would never be such a huge demand for organ donorship cuz family members would most likely always opt to help out!! It's actualy really rare for a parent/sibbling to be a match
stephanie daigle You didn't pay attention to the story. She didn't give her a kidney, she gave somebody else a kidney so her boss could get one quicker. Like a trade. Any family or friend could have done the same.

Ah! I knew something is missing. It wouldn't be a "donation" if there was an agreement and big money here. Therefore it should've been fine if the company fired her or not
There was no prior agreement between the two. David Chan is saying that the lawsuit was settled out of court, confidentially. He's right if her boss would just been a halfway decent person she would have saved herself and the company a lot of money.

That's usually how it goes. The person who receives the kidney starts to feel better almost immediately, and recovers fairly quickly. I have been a dialysis nurse for 12 years. If you go into renal failure, there are treatment options other than transplants. Of course, for most people with kidney disease, that is the most desired outcome. But you can live a relatively normal life on dialysis for many many years. I think my patient with the longest time on dialysis was about 15 years and he died of cardiac complications, it wasn't because of his kidney failure. I have had many patients who were in their 20's - 60's, who worked 8 hours a day, 5 days a week, going to dialysis 3 evenings a week and would still go out at the weekend with their mates to the pub or clubs. Most people on dialysis don't die of kidney related issues, unless they decide to cease treatment. Most renal patients, in my experience, die of other causes.
