A decade ago, Lisa Hardy was working for a real estate company that made her an offer she couldn't refuse. Dean Renyolds reports on how the real estate downturn became her good fortune.
EXACTLY! Now that it’s been bought, the new owners are going to make her pay rent, so she’s going to have to come up with money for housing now. She should have saved all of the rent she would have been paying over the years and she could be the owner instead of a renter. I WISH I could live somewhere rent free for ONE year, I’d have the down payment for my own house!
@@Paola-jf2qf there's no excuse for her not saving money over a nine year period. Rent/ mortgage is the biggest expense for most people and she didn't have it.
It’s obvious to me. She just stopped worrying.. for what? Won’t do you any good. After dodging so many bullets for TEN yrs.. it will become apparent to me that the Creator wants me here so why stress??
that is not how it works in life if you do not have the pressure of having to pay rent every month you would dave the money destine for rent saved no way 99% of the people would not have saved money
Okay that may be true but she is a single mother with children wow we dont know her full story have a heart people! It didnt used to be like this people wanted better for one another.Just like it says in the bible in the last days men's hearts will grow cold for one another..they'll loose natural affection for one another..
The only time I've EVER had even close to that amount of money is when tax refunds come in, and I also don't have to pay rent. I also only make about $1,000 a mth and have 3 kids. It's no one's damn business what she's saved and what she hasn't. Maybe she did at one point and something came up. What a rude and judgemental comment!! Especially since MANY people cannot afford anything else BUT rent, they obviously haven't saved any money either, because they can't!
@@amorrissey9264 Also, the house is in need of extensive repairs, and she'd have to get home-owners insurance and pay annual taxes. The cost of home-ownership seems endless.
I'm sure she was jobless when her employer went to jail and the company went other. The recession by it's very nature made it hard for ppl to find employment. Ppl with master degrees were taking jobs as maids. We don't know what this family had to endure
@@briantep458 idk how she could be in debt, she didn't take out a loan for the house and any medical bill like an ambulance ride or stitches which costs 5k can be paid within a year working at Mcdonald's. maybe a major surgery can put her in debt but I doubt she had one. 3 kids might have lowered her savings yet she had enough money to buy new appliances. those are not cheap
Am I the only one who noticed that she lived there rent free for 9 years. Didn't pay mortgage, rent nor property taxes. How much money do you think one would save over 9 years without any of those expenses & she couldn't come up with $7,500?
@@NarutoUzumaki-xb9fw Then she failed. Providing a roof over their heads & security would be better spent money. Looking at the place, they were living comfortably & there was clearly money to be saved & the ability to BUY a house for a mere $7,500 shouldn't have been out of reach for her.
True. Houses in my area(semi poor/low income)they want $700+ just to rent the house and at least $5,000+ to own one. Its ridiculous! I want to live in a house but I'd need a roommate just to help. Its pathetic how they do the poor here.
So for nearly 10 YEARS she was living rent-free and mortgage-free but she didn’t manage to save any sort of money? There’s no way she shouldn’t have been able to buy that house when it was only 7.5k
@Reerei Dia I find that very odd. The bank ended up selling to an investor in Singapore no less. Real estate and mortgage lending are shady. She never had a chance anyhow. A foreign bidder without money issues can swoop up anything. It happened to my friends apartment in Rio De Janeiro. She lives in Impanema Beach. Chinese investors buying up condos in her building. They have more money to blow.
You cannot “make” money selling a home for which you do not hold the title. Additionally, if she did not report the housing as part of her income, she committed tax fraud.
It's like a building a home and getting too comfortable. And now you got to worry about the people outside that want to get into your house.. her story just reminds me of Eve and being f***** by the snake, forcibly... You know the snake wants his money..
Man that lady could have bought the house to own it and had it looking beautiful!!! No rent? 9 years sheesh! Unfortunately not everyone has the hustler mind set 🤦🏻♀️
Rose A I agree! Seems like many Americans don’t have financial aptitude. Had to teach myself, buy books and ask others! I won’t allow excuses to limit my mindset anymore.
@Tat Bas I'm a mother and if things happened between me and my childs father best belive I'd work hard af for my baby👌 making excuses wont get people anywhere🤦🏻♀️ She had the opportunity to even make a lil business while being a SAHM🤦🏻♀️ I know life happens but sis played herself 🤷🏻♀️
This comment is dumb. After 9 years, do you think an abandon house is beautiful on its own? A house that size requires a lot of up keep and maintenance which is what she probably used the rent on. The interviewer was very condescending like many of these comments.
Yes... Not everyone has $7500 at their disposal. But... if she didn’t save anything, go to the bank and get a loan. My other question is.. If her boss went to jail, where was she working?
She will be lucky if it's not twice that a year. If she had saved a couple hundred a month all those yrs she could've bought the house, covered escrow, & had plenty to do all the repairs. I wonder if she could have fought back under squatter's rights?
Wth, couldn't pay 7500 to own the home outright after 9 yearsss of free rent? That's not a good ending. She goings to pay that in the first 8 months of the first year in rent.
No doubt! Rent is definitely not cheap, but owning your property outright and only having to pay property taxes or state taxes is MUCH cheaper. It's a shame she didn't save more money during that decade. If she wasn't working 40+ hours a week during that time then I hope she at least enjoyed it! Cuz a change is gonna come...
One would think after 9 years of no incident they wouldn't need to set aside large amounts of money. The 7500 may have been out of her budget, she did try to buy it twice, but the last time they made the price higher than she could afford...
With the measure you measure to others, it will be measured back to you. Shaken together, pressed down, and running over, you will be given back what you give to others. Proverbs 17:9 Whoever would foster love covers over an offense, but whoever repeats the matter separates close friends. Where's the love?
David Anderson So u wasted ur racist time writing a ignorant comment that doesn’t bother me because my people aren’t stupid like u. . because it’s ur people that’s on the food stamp and welfare system more than mine. I live in Louisiana and most of the trash here don’t look like me. Soooo nice try!
That’s only what she told reporters, she clearly has a real estate background and knows the property value is complete crap. If she was going to purchase a house, she would purchase a nice one out of that probably abandon neighborhood. She can easily be lying. You never know, the Singapore owners could watch this and then boot her out if she says anything bad about the house in trended value. Better to just rent..
@@RASTAGOOB yeh I'm confused too all I found is this link to this obituary www.echovita.com/us/obituaries/tn/chattanooga/lisa-hardy-7314126 but I'm not sure if it's a different Lisa hardy or not
The problem is that she lived rent free for 9 years then when offered under $8,000 to buy the house which was just the taxes that were owed she didn't have it so you would think after 9 years of no rent she would have saved up enough to buy a much nicer house. Even if she saved only $100 a month she would have $108,000 wtf is wrong with this lady for real if I was given that long rent free I'd have a lot of money saved.
I noticed a lot of people are saying why didn't she save her money during the 9 years. I was thinking the same, however we don't know her circumstances to really know what she did or didn't do. I'm glad she had a place to stay regardless of the situation. Bless her and her family ❤
Sandra It`s unbelievable that she could live there rent free for 9 years and not have any money saved. Maybe she thought she would live there forever rent free. It`s hard to feel sorry for her.
I would have taken out a loan, sold stuff, gotten a second job etc if it meant i could legally own the house ive been staying in rent free for 10 years. Should have saved smh
I ABSOLUTELY love this story. The best part about it, is the BEAUTIFUL smiles on the owner's and her daughter's faces. My soul is laughing at how God protected her ALL these years. (Our ancestors looking down on US.) Many blessings for MANY more MIRACLES. (Go Singapore)
When GOD is looking out for you their are no ancestors. This whole ancestors thing is a concept taken from idolatry. GOD has no equals. He and HE alone reigns supreme!!!
@@abdikal566 - Hey, I apologize if I was wrong. I'd go back & listen again. I only heard she'd be rent-free if working with the real estate company. She said she paid utilities only. Maybe she got a 2nd job to pay utilities, food, and everyday expenses.
ERICAKELLY 123, obviously some people don't have to have any common sense. I am with you. Remain under the F---ing radar; I wondering, why didn't save any money...
Strong Nubian Fighter cuz it's her money and she did what she wanted to do you don't have to take care of her so why is that important that's her problem maybe she couldn't afford to save y'all act like it's easy out there for everyone but it's not
🙂😊 yeah but she been liveing there for 9 years she was starting to belive stupidness like its her house 😁 she aint payin a dime so sad >.> 7500 bux she could have even financed that too but maby Ego played a role
So she KNEW that she could be kicked out any day of that house, still had family, still she never saved money for the inevitable and 9 years rent free she still can't pay $7,500 for the house? ... That's $70 a month, wow
Ok lets be clear on this Christopher, she first was "homeless" and started living free there before even having children, some things in life need to be done before the others, like having your own roof over your head before bringing new life to this world.
Unfortunately , We have these type people that don't really try to better them selves , She said she was scared but she wasn't that scared or she would have had money saved , she's probably paying 70 or $ 80 ,0000.00 for the house now oppose to the $ 7,500.00 she could've paid cash,
Suppose she didn't save after living rent-free for nine years, shame on her. Imagine having a nine year's rent free? I would be rich. I have never lived anyplace rent-free.
Not mad she had a place to stay for free but, did she at least stack her paper, the money that would normally go towards rent? Nine years worth, I guess not. smh😒
Yep she should have saved, I would have cause I would not have trusted not to save, being able to stay rent free is to good to be true,I know she now feels bad she didn't save
pasadena19 A 3 bedroom house in Indianapolis would cost at least $900 a month over the course of those 9 years. That comes out to a little over 97k saved during that time span. Damn near 100k saved on rental costs. She should def have some money saved up.
the amount of empty houses is insane here in America, I live in Detroit....I seen a homeless guy, fix basically a shell into a home he didnt have a job because he didnt have a address so he did this to get back on his feet. He borrow tools and neighbors donated dry wall, and fixtures for him. He got a job a few months ago and when to see if he could find out the history of the house and the city end up giving him the house and he looks happy....he told me he was on his last straw when he was living on the streets and took this gamble...cant say I blame him
I think that with run-down and forgotten properties if a homeless person with a motivated attitude- or even a few homeless roommates that can work together to fix it up want to do so-- they should have some kind of process to allow it, monitor improvements for safety, and maybe look in on them for the first year or so to make sure things are okay for them. I live in a neighborhood where furniture and all sorts of things are tossed out. Half the people i know got most of their furniture for free. There are also lots of surplus type places where you can get plumbing, electrical, etc. It wouldn't hurt a thing and it would help depressed neighborhoods. But it makes sense, so I doubt it will ever happen.
He wasn't really being condensing she was being stupid when she replied 'no' to it being too good to be true. I mean who gets to live rent free. Come on now.
She's not very intelligent, now she'll probably pay $7,500 or more yearly in rent, all because she couldn't manage to save at minimum $80 a month for 9 years while she was living rent free. 🤦🏾♀️
@fakeplasticbees Who's fault is it that she only makes $1,300 per month? I made less than that for a few year, then took some loans out and went for college and job training. Then I made more.
@fakeplasticbees Agreed. That's why job training is probably better for her. She could be a secretary, paralegal, electrician, plumber, network engineer, etc.
I'm disappointed that after almost 10 years of living for free she doesn't have at least $7,000 saved up. If you live free for almost ten years you should use that as a stepping stone.
I am so confused. 🤔 You lived rent free for over 9 years and didn't save a minimum of $10K? She could have been saving so much money while living there. I'm not blaming her for staying there rent free (that's the company fault that hires her). I do, however blame her for not being more financially responsible.
The suicidal Indian Utilities and Maintenance usually come from Savings after you paid rent. That’s why some ppl struggle to pay them. If she worked she still should’ve had enough saved to buy that house after 9 years. $70-75 a month saved over them years could buy it for $7500.
So this woman lived there for 10 years for free and didn't save enough money to buy the place that's crazy you would have thought she would have stashed away thousands of dollars within 10 years but nope shame on her.....
yes good for her for being able to live rent free but I also feel like it could be a hinderance too i mean on her emotional well-being. Not knowing if you should fix up the house because you don’t know if you’re getting kicked out tomorrow. Or if they will charge you retroactively etc. This is the only home the daughter has ever known and it can get taken from them at any moment. My heart goes out to them i hope they are ok.
yeah I dont blame her.. like she saw her chance and she took it..plus she has kids. If I had kids and had the opportunity to live somewhere for free, I would most certainly take it. Kids are really expensive and so are houses & if I had the chance to only pay 1, I would be in money saving heaven 😂😂
Ya-Isha Cham- Oh please. Do the math. In order to save $7500 she only needed to put away $69 a month. That’s clearly possible considering she wasn’t paying a mortgage or utilities.
Good for her! Those homes sitting empty should be occupied, otherwise they fall in disrepair! Why is everyone so angry with her?? Frankly, Wells Fargo Bank should giver her an interest free loan!
Plus if she had filed taxes and her daughter was her dependent, within 9 years she could of received way more than the 7000 for that house in her tax check.
She was care taking! It’s being done ALL the time here in Mexico in this tourist area! You stay for free and take care of the house! It keeps VANDALS from destroying the home!
Ok for the haters im sure you all would call city government and let them know u not paying rent and offer to make a payment right..she was following the last instructions that were given to her by the owners of the house
Not a hater, just a wonderer...like why she was not saving any money? The opportunity given her was squandered. I have no problem with her ability to live rent free, but I do with her not planning for AFTER this good fortune ran out. Teach a man to fish...teach a woman to save! It was obvious she had no plan in place and was waiting for another break to come her way. As a mother she NEEDS to be proactive, not homeless!
Honesty, God was blessing her, but God was probably also saying.. "I'm giving you virtually a DECADE to save up and get your life together.. because I know you need it." ...which she obviously did NOT do.
I think its awesome she was blessed with a home for 9 years but I think it's terrible she didn't take care of the home, and she did not have money saved up that she couldn't afford to buy it for $7500 (that's less then a year worth of rent in most places) What was she doing all this time?! That part made me not feel sorry for her
_MaryJanesFlowers at the end of the day I don't care what she has going on she know she is staying in a house for free that's not hers and that at anytime someone can come and take it. She should have saved up for at least a year worth of rent incase she ever got kicked out. 9 years mannn there is no excuse
always thinking24 Just like I can post my opinion so can everyone else. What I don't like is everyone trying to come for me because of my opinion. I stand behind what I said. It's ok if you disagree that's fine i listen to everyones opinion. But the ignorance has to stop
Well with 3 kids, having to buy food, pay for medical and dental services, school for her kids, keeping the house up to date. And water, electricity, heating Bill's..... why do you think
@@edwardjones7313 she lived there for NINE YEARS,kids don't require. Soo much material stuff only your time and since she was working at a rental agency I doubt she was living off of minimum wage

Ja Ja Her being black has nothing to do with it. She's just financially irresponsible (not saving money) and lacks good decision making (having a kid before being ready )
Anthony Turner 9 YEAR'S and she can't save 7500 . And still don't have any money to fix the house . @@therealtampadude9175 It's as if there isn't MASSIVE tax relief for people with kids. Food stamps, and other welfare benefits. Along with no rent she should of had money just lying in wait. Pisses me off when my husband and I worked so hard to buy our land and home and the mortgage company swindled us out of everything and the flip side is this it's rediculss
Yeah, people act as if she was homeless or something. But, they forget she made attempts to buy it, just that it kept getting pulled. People need to be more grateful of their circumstances.
Yep, buy it and ya gotta pay taxes n insurance. Now imagine a plaque or war n the mass housing surplus-real estate investors would pay for tenants. For now landlords rape tenants where income is greater n supported by local government through higher property tax. Keeping income down an rent high yeilds more section 8 housing. Correct-government serves the minority rich through repression of the majority. Now you know why for every government representative there exist 6 lobbyist. Yep-for every dollar handed out for aid 8 has to be raised in taxes or borrowed. Now ya know why public debt is beyond control or ability to be paided without devaluing money through inflation. All of this has been made possible by the Feds since LBJ's "Great Society". This greed has transformed this nation from the world's police for peace into one of the most aggressive invaders .
