Women during the Joseon Dynasty 조선 had very different lives than today. In the previous episode I have explored women and marriage and divorce, inheritance, education, performing ancestral rites and what women had to wear. I have mostly looked at women from the upper class, the yangban 양반. I invite you to watch the first episode before watching this one. In this episode I will look at the lives of female members of the royal family, commoners, entertainers, physicians and shamans.
The queen was in charge of the naewoemyŏngbu 내외명부: the king’s concubines, court ladies, palace women, wives of civil and military officials as well as wives and children of royal family members. She also had to raise her children, more importantly her sons. If she couldn’t bear a son, she had to raise the son of a royal concubine as her own.
Female commoners and slaves were usually involved in productive labor. Female entertainers or courtesans, better known as kisaeng 기생, were property of the state and from the lower classes of socity but were the only women who could interact with members of the yangban class.
Female physicians, uinyeo, 의녀 had to assist male doctors because male physicians couldn’t touch women. They also acted as midwives and even sometimes as kisaeng during Yeonsangun’s reign.
Female shamans, munyeo, 무녀 performed ceremonies for the welfare of all social classes even though they were looked down upon because of Confucianism.
