I feel guilty for spending any money - period. Perils of growing up poor, you can never shake the guilt no matter how much you may have. Sometimes I see others walk to an aisle and pickup something so effortlessly and here I am, doing the math and thinking if I “deserve” this. Given a choice, I wouldn’t be any other way. I don’t know how to. Maybe one day I will. Maybe :)

If you live in NYC and have the usual expenses that go with that lifestyle, $300k isn't much. First, almost half goes to taxes because of the high state and city tax rate and higher fed bracket. Then, rent for a 1 bedroom is $5k or more. Kids usually go to private school and the good ones have annual tuition of 50k. Nannies for the younger kids aren't cheap. After those costs, there's nothing left for food, utilities, or anything else.

I bought a dress last week because I wanted something nice for Thanksgiving, but I felt so guilty paying full price instead of waiting for it to go on sale. I had the money and I hadn't bought any new clothes for a couple of months, but it just felt wrong to be paying that much when, if I had started planning a bit sooner, I could've found something for less, or something worth more that had been marked down to the same price.

I buy expensive makeup/skincare, I buy nespresso pods, etc. I am not rich at all, I have about 2k savings, but I just like buying things that enhance my every day quality of life - like, nice shoes, good coffee, quality makeup, new books, muji pens, organic food etc. It's just the way I prefer to live my life.

Like, my old handbag is still technically usable, but it's got two big creases where I accidentally folded it over, so I'm looking for a more expensive bag that'll last longer. Also feel guilty about one off purchases that I know will break quickly, like the Japanese-style schoolbag I had for a year that has now broken. 20€ down the drain. The economy is different. In North America it's typical to spend at least 1000$ a month on your rent or mortgage for your house- in some places it's a whole lot more per month. Food typically costs about 150$ a week for one to two people. My monthly bus pass in Canada is 125$ a month! Movie theatre tickets are 12$, and books cost about 20$ new. A dozen eggs can cost as cheap as 2$, or as much as 6$ for organic. What other items do you usually spend on? Reply and I will try to give you a north american price (I am Canadian, but am familiar with general prices).

It’s all about cost of living. If the cost of living is high in your area, then it’s proportional to(or close enough to it) how much you make. That’s why a lot of people who live in LA or NYC can travel a lot. The cost log living in those cities is much higher than those in other areas around the world, giving them more money.
