I worked and lived in New York City in the late 1990s to early 2000s as a young 20 something male. Tinder wasn't around at the time or online dating as a norm. My female roommate was a model and all of her female friends were a 10 out of 10. They often took me out as a group to the hot clubs etc, and at the time in NYC (and maybe it's still a trend), it was all about being confident for men. I would say nearly all the men my roommate and her friends would date were very unattractive guys (overweight, heavy smokers -yellow teeth, bad complexion,.balding like George Constanza etc) but they all had game and confidence. With confidence they had access to all the amenities the city provided. Maybe the women were into the access, but this group had no issues getting into whatever club or restaurant they wanted to on their own. My roommate ended up with a boyfriend who eventually became my boss. He was a total bull dog in business but not in anyway "attractive" by society's norms. He taught me early on in my career to go for what I wanted in life and to not give a crap about the little things.

Also keep in mind that the other 20% is shared among men they find average or above. Only about 10-15% are rated "above average," and about 5% are rated "very attractive," hence the Tinder statistic.

(I’m glad that I’m married and for a long time have not been dating anymore!): Most US women are not virgins by the time they marry or at least become engaged. A far larger percentage of young men are in fact virgins or have very little substantial sexual experience in that same amount of time. I don't believe women choose a mate based solely on physical appearance (although it probably depends on the woman's age, maturity, stage in life, etc). An interesting comparison would include how men and women rate themselves on a scale of 1-10 for attractiveness vs. how independent 3rd parties might rate them (i.e., do they tend to underrate or overrate themselves?).

I'm convinced it's related to the way a man's personality and relationship with a woman affect her perceptions of his attractiveness. From a friend, who seems to be indicative of what I've gathered over the years: "I noticed it first when looking back on photos from my youth, thinking that some of the boys/men looked like people I never knew. The ones I really loved, who were kind and protective, were always so much more handsome than they seem in the photos. Then I started to notice that there were men I dated who I found very attractive but turned out to be snakes or sadists, and I have a hard time remembering now how they looked back before I knew what they were really like."

I've spoke with a female friend: she told me that generally speaking, women view men whom they don't know that approach them, or that they just meet, as a *potential threat* until proven otherwise. Whereas most men I presume, myself included, do not view women as dangerous in the same sense of being afraid they'll attack us.

There's a fundamental thing missing in online dating. Initial communication, I can pass hundreds of women on the street and not even notice them for the most part let alone remember them two days later. Yet I recall I usually remembered the ones that smiled and said hello for a week or more. This IMO is what online dating is incapable of providing. What you have is a billion ab and sports car photos screaming "look at me" when a fair percentage of women by and large are far more interested in men who would simply be willing to listen to them. I've had women initially ignore me, only to end up dating me once they knew they got to know me through communication and demonstration of character. And have been in a LTR of 19 years, 7 months, and 6 days. Being a good man involves more than simply recognizing it yourself, and screeching it online. It involves communicating it to the person of interest through actions and sometimes requires patience and understanding that not everyone is going to like you regardless of you're interest in them. Why? Because ironically humans aren't mind readers and every one of us has individual tastes for better or worse. What are you're thoughts on the issue?

In general, women’s natural instincts are to be more discerning when it comes to a mating partner because they are (subconsciously) considering procreation as a potential possibility. Men, on the other hand are instinctively drawn to females because of the desire to mate. Therein lies the difference.

The tinder studies don't account for how many people like profiles based on other reason, not just looks. Plus it depends on what pictures are being shown. Not to mention there is a personal bio that each person writes, and depending on what's written there, it could be the deciding factor if you like that profile or not.

Modern society doesn't really use the halfway point on a scale as the actual average tipping point. For example, if you ask folks to judge a movie on a scale from 1-10, they'll consider anything under a 6 or even 7 to be not very good. Along those same lines, rating someone a 5/10 would be borderline calling them hideous rather than stating that they're average. Probably much of this stems from passing / failing grades in school, and how they skew towards the top.
