Women's Hearing Phnom Penh 2012 - Regional Women's Hearing on Gender-Based Violence in Conflict.
Survivors of conflict-based sexual violence from across the region were converge on Phnom Penh in October 2012 to share their experiences and share with each other how to better advocate for sexual justice.
As a follow up to the successful Women's Hearing in 2011, CDP, in collaboration with an advisory committee of national and international experts, convened the Regional Women's Hearing on Gender-Based Violence in Conflict. Delegations were being invited from Cambodia, Nepal, Bangladesh and Timor Leste to testify about gender based violence committed during armed conflict or oppressive regimes and access to justice for survivors. These delegations were include survivors of gender-based violence and activists, researchers, academics, NGO representatives or other members of civil society from these countries.
The years Hearing was supported by GIZ, Open Society Foundations, UN Women, IFA, United Nations Trust Fund to End Violence Against Women.
The objectives of the 2012 Hearing were to:
- Draw international attention to the pervasiveness of gender-based violence in conflict and foster joint advocacy on addressing the inability or unwillingness of judicial transitional justice mechanisms to provide justice for survivors of these crimes.
- Promote acknowledgement of the gender-based atrocities inflicted on women during conflict or under oppressive regimes and advance support and justice for
survivors of these crime.
- Foster a regional dialogue on the best practices and lessons learnt in delivering justice for survivors of gender-based violence.
- Provide survivors with an opportunity to break the silence that enshrouds gender-based violence and confront their pasts as a means to find some closure with traumatic memories.
- Promote the inclusion of women's experiences of conflict and oppressive regimes into official narratives and historical records.
