Somebody gets tapped! A look at the matches between 2 of the best groundfighters in the history of women's Judo. Kayla Harrison and Shori Hamada. Both women are world champions and have had success in multiple sports. This is a great study on the use of the kimura in judo and other grappling sports.

Great breakdown. Hamada really did her homework and she was ready for Harrison. When Harrison tried to get on top for that over-under pass Hamada had that kimura waiting for her.

Harrison did a good job keeping it tight 1st match (no space) and countering, but in second match gave Hamada too many opportunities to get to the arm. Both are excellent at newaza.

I wonder if you know Akari Ogata, the silver medalist at the 2011 World Championships She was also very good at Newaza She was a national karate champion when she was in elementary school and switched to Judo When she entered junior high school Then she went on to Aso High School, famous for Sankaku techniques Her juniors were Mami Umeki and Masako Doi Ogata and Shori Hamada were rivals whose birthdays were a day apart Having said that, Ogata treated Hamada like a child until they graduated from university At that time, Ogata was even beating the world champion Kayla Harrison on the ground However, starting in 2015, Ogata and Hamada's positions started to reverse Hamada is a later bloomer, so it was no surprise that she was beaten by Harrison in 2014 At this stage, she was also outclassed on the ground by Umeki, who was four years younger than her However, Hamada hasn't been beaten by anyone on the ground since she was defeated by Velensek in 2015

Thanks for this info. I've been looking for more info on other elite Judoka from Aso High School. By the way, any idea on why Hamada continued to progress so much on the ground? It's my understanding that she started Judo at a young age and focussed on newaza from the beginning, so it's unusual that she's become more successful over time with newaza.

Other famous players in Aso high school 1997,1999 World Silver and Bronze Medalist Miho Ninomiya 2008 World Junior Champion Sayuri Yamamoto 2009 World Cadet Bronze medalist Saori Adachi 2013 World Junior Champion Shiori Yoshimura In Ninomiya's time, they weren't known for their Sankaku techniques Adachi married Yuma Oshima, known for his Newaza, and took the last name Oshima She's now an MMA athlete There ain't a lotta footage of Aso high school students The club was almost destroyed because of shameful coach Matsuoka Footage of Aso High School winning the Kinshuki, One of the three national high school team championships, 10 years ago ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-RFVVjHj_CeY.html 3:12 Shameful coach Matsuoka 3:22 Yui Imamizo, who at the time was considered to be the best high school girl at Newaza, Finished Tsukasa Yoshida with Ushiro-Kesa Though Yoshida was also well known for her Newaza back then 5:00 Shiori Yoshimura finished Ayumi Hori with her favorite turnover 10:35 Mami Umeki finished Fumio Oka with her favorite Sankaku Sure, Hamada had been working on her Newaza techniques since she was a junior But at the time, that didn't lead to good results She entered the JSDF Physical Training School in 2013 There's Hideyuki Sakai who's very famous for his Newaza I think a lot of the reason she became so strong is because of his coaching

@@vsmaster1831 Thanks for the extra information. That's the 1st time I've heard of Yoshida losing by newaza. There is no footage of her losing by newaza in international competitions, even against Kaori Matsumoto, so I wondered if she had ever lost by pin or submission.
@vsmaster1831
@vsmaster1831 3 года назад
When Yoshida was a junior, She was submitted by Nae Udaka,who was 10 years older than her, and She was pinned by Momo Tamaoki,who was a year older than her However, those two were domestic competitions In international competition, she only got pinned by Megumi Ishikawa in the finals of WC Jeju in 2012 Ishikawa is a year junior in college to Kaori Matsumoto, and has beaten her twice on the ground However, since Ishikawa was basically only capable of Newaza, she wasn't so active in the world

I'm going to be making an in-depth video on Masako Doi and Mami Umeki who're both specialists in sankaku turnovers very soon. I also have a plan to do an in-depth video on Kelita Zupancic's sankaku game, but it's going to take a while to do that one as it's going to be a long video. I'm most interested in sankaku and kimura, so I want to feature those a lot.

I've watched a lot of Kayla's matches, she relies on her strength a lot, versus how Ronda used good technique and timing.
