It’s such a shame that the PPA has such a tight leash on its players that virtually none of them can play in what is labeled as our national championship. Given that she is probably the best female player ever, Anna Leigh Waters can do what she wants, and her mother probably does not have a current contract given the length of time she was out for her knee injury. While there are certainly some up-and-coming players that we will hear about doing well in the next year or two who played in the 2024 U.S. Open, the field really is not strong. There are two teams who placed in the top 10 that I had never heard of either player and there are only a couple of players on teams that placed 11th through 25th whose names are at all familiar; this is considering that I subscribed to a number of different pickleball podcasts and RU-vid channels plus have watched at least five hours of pro pickleball per week since the days when ALW was just a young and promising newcomer. I bet it was a special thing for the Waters to have won another US Open after Leigh had such a significant knee injury. But I tend to doubt they can repeat these sorts of results on the PPA tour. The top PPA pros are hitting so much harder and the game is played so much faster since Leigh last played against PPA players. I wonder how often she plays versus letting her daughter continue playing with Catherine Parenteau as the clearcut best women’s doubles team in the world.

ALW's 2h backhand is so powerful from any position. One of the best shots in pickleball, period.
