When I was on it in the early 70's, it didn't have a cage, just an open bench with a simple bar across our laps. It remains the scariest ride I've ever been on, including roller coasters.
I've been riding it since I was 5. They ALWAYS had a cage! Can you imagine if there was no way to keep someone freaking out jumping from a car to 'save themselves!' Even the designers knew.
I went on this ride, without realizing the cart was swinging (I didn't read the signs). When it started swinging I screamed bloody murder, thinking that: out of all days, the one time a cart breaks, it had to be today when I rode. Then they told me it was supposed to happen XD
no 2-D video can possibly convey the heart- and time-freezing terror which a nonchalant ride on this gigantic wheel - with its bizarre little rolling car gimmick - can induce. ferris whee rides all tend to blend together in memory - not so with the deceptively quiet and seemingly placid Wonder Wheel. i literally swallowed my chewing gum when i experienced the sensation of being flung - my most vivid memory from the long-ago summer of 1960.
When we went on it, we had been looking at all these scary rollercoasters on the park and we were like "We're obviously going on the swinging one" because this was obviously a baby's ride and the least we could do was pick the swinging carts. Boy oh boy did we crap our pants when it actually started swinging and we felt like we were rolling onto our deaths. Good times.
It’s incredible how a ride so historic can still be so much fun! The views are fantastic and the ride experience itself is surprisingly incredibly fun! Luna Park is awesome, but I had the most fun for sure riding the Wonder Wheel and the Spook-a-Rama, two historic landmark rides that are waaaay more fun than you’d expect.
I've been on this... 😂😂 it scaree the ish out of me and my friends. Its really mental. It feels like you are flinging to your death. Lol and its super high!!!
The advantage of riding the Swinging cars is that they swing. But the advantage of riding the Stationary cars is that they go much higher than the Swinging cars. So, what does this mean? Ride twice to go on both
that is amazing for 15 years I lived in ny and I never rode the wonder wheel and cyclone yet I will this year but I had no clue the wonder wheel did this this is awesome
The first time I went on this in the 90's, it was scary. But after a while the more you ride on this, the more you'll get used to it. You can't be afraid of heights tho I'll tell that much lol. My 13 year old niece was screaming went I rode on the Wonder Wheel with her on Monday. It was epic
I USED TO MAKE COTTON CANDY AT A CONCESSION STAND ACROSS FROM THE BASE OF THE WONDER WHEEL AROUND 1965. ONE DAY I COUNTED ALL THE BOLTS ON ONE SIDE OF THE WHEEL. DONT REMEMBER HOW MANY THOUGH.
I beg to differ on your comment. The city inspectors ensures that the integrity and the foundation of the Wonder Wheel is strong and safe for riding. The city of new york wouldn't want to get sued by the millions if a fatality occurs as a result from the ride. Every single ride at Coney Island must pass inspection. If it doesn't pass inspection then the ride wouldn't be operating at all. Oh and by the way NY is very strict with inspections
Theory Time! “Wonder” is a movie about a boy with a craniofacial difference. So his face looks a little different. His name is Auggie. His sister, Via went to Coney Island. Wonder Wheel...Coney Island? Is there a connection between the two?
I think I went on it when I was 11 or so. Me and my dad went on it with a couple other people. One of the other guys was having a panic attack, and his friend was mocking him saying “hey man even the kid is enjoying it!”.
Honestly, if I were to go on that ride, I would always stick to one of the white cars. I'm not into strong swinging, so I'd always stick to the stationary ones.
I don't get why some people are more afraid of a Ferris wheel than they are of a roller coaster... Roller coasters literally give me a panic attack, where as Ferris wheels are the most relaxing thing in the world! ..but whenever I go on the Wonder Wheel, I ALWAYS pick the swinging car! 😁
StitchGV because they seem flimsy to me..When im high up i want to be in a linear motion..I dont want to feel like Im stuck there..At least with rollercoasters, I know when the drops happen..but for ferris wheels, it just stops and stays there..
i remember going on this when they were building an area of it or smth?? i was pretty young when i went on this. my father dragged my mom & i on it. i was quiet, dunno if i was scared (now i'd probably be pissing myself) but my mom on the other hand was having herself a moment & telling us she was gonna puke. i have no clue how my father handled this so smoothly. also at 2:08, you can see that small dolphin ride i went on when i was little ^-^!
At first when i went to coney Island i thaught that u couldn't ride the wonder wheel i just thaught it stands there and u just look at it i did not know u could Actullay ride it😅😅
Yea I went on a ferris wheel once and i got stuck at the top first and the wind started blowing and the started to tip it and i SCREAMED! and i'm a little monster so my friend told me to do it as if gagas life depended on it so i did it. Same thing with the Shock drop I went on it drops you so fast!
