Original Description: Ever wonder how the pitch meeting that started it all went down? Check out this video to find out how Gal Gadot's accent lead to an island of Borat-ladies, or why Chris Pine's Steve Trevor was so non-challant about meeting gods. You might even learn how Diana Prince fighting Ares became one of the most ridiculous third acts we've seen in a while! Trust us, it's super easy, barely an inconvenience.

In "Hunt for Red October" the Russian characters start out speaking in Russian and at one point, near the beginning of the film, the camera pans past a column obscuring the character who's currently talking and when he comes back into view he's suddenly speaking English. I always thought that was a brilliant way to let the audience know that "OK, these guys are speaking Russian, but we've turned on the universal translator so you can understand them."

You're right in that The Hunt for Red October is a great example of how to transition from foreign language to English while still maintaining the notion that they're speaking the foreign language, but I think you're mixing up how they do it with another film. The camera zooms in on Political Officer Ivan Putin's mouth as he is quoting Revelation 16:16-17, pivoting from Russian to English on the word "Armageddon," and then zooming back out.

That's actually where Valkyrie got the idea from. If I remember correctly, both movies start with a foreign language until they say something like "armageddon" then it switches to English. @@misterwhyte As much as I would like to solely dump Hollywood and any large corporation for being cheapskates with all the money they have, authentic accents *are* pretty hard to be fair. Accents are like Tom Hardy's one (massive) weakpoint as an actor and that guy is otherwise a great actor. I agree with you that Hollywood (writers) could at least to *try* more, but that pretty much goes without saying in general. The most of the other DCEU movies besides this one, including the _WW84_ dumpster fire, are proof of that without even setting outside of that universe. ("Save Martha!")
@misterwhyte

@@MusicoftheDamned "authentic accents are pretty hard to be fair" that's why you hire people from the actual place. I like your comment on life experiences. One comment from The Critical Drinker on modern hollywood writers is a lack or real life experience with struggles. They come from mid to upper income families, went to college at ivy leagues or private universities, and never had to work hard and not get something. Not because of their effort but because of not having the means, discrimination, connections, etc. So they perceive their very easy life as a struggle, which is very out of touch. So a lot of the stories with "heros" leaves out that story arc of overcoming adversity. Instead the hero comes out from a very easy/supportive background, is indestructible, easily defeats the bad guys, etc. Even worse when it is an insult to the common person showing how easy or even better they are. "like why so hard". So totally agree that having that is important to writing, and extremely important for your unique reviews.

Wonder Woman was definitely one of the better films in the DCEU. The only glaring issue I had with this film was how they portrayed Ares. At first I thought the idea of him was interesting, that, despite him being the God of War, he only whispered into people's ears and into how to create certain weapons, of which he just watched them how they would act if they had such knowledge. And I thought the lesson that the movie was trying to convey was an interesting idea, as a human's cruelty is based on how they used their knowledge rather than the influence of others. But then they tossed it out the window by having Wonder Woman and Ares fight each other. And of course, when Ares died everyone just stopped fighting and the war ended right there. This ending, in my opinion, was completely hypocritical when it came to the overall story and message. And what made it even worse is, despite the fact that Ares is declared dead, wars are still happening afterwards. So what was even the point of killing off Ares if there were other wars and conflicts that happened after the events of Wonder Woman the movie?
@carlsiouxfalls
@carlsiouxfalls 4 месяца назад
She only killed the Greek god of war. There's still the Roman god of war, and the Norse god of war, and the Egyptian god of war... I don't know if any of those actually feature in DC lore.

As much as I really WANTED to love David Thewlis as Ares, it just really didn’t work for me when they pretty much immediately launched into HUGE SUPERHERO PUNCHOUT, because heaven forbid we have a superhero movie where the climax isn’t people bunching or blasting each other in the face (and of the many, many strengths he has as an actor, “physically imposing” is not one of them). And Ares as more of a manipulator/puppetmaster (which he 100% WAS able to deliver on) and the theme that humanity CHOOSES to embrace violence and war (which they’d built up throughout the rest of the movie) was basically undercut by the war wrapping up once Ares died. Despite that, it was one of the few generally good DC movies we got.

SUCH a good scene, and I love the way they handled the 'they're human', 'I take it back, they're monsters' aspect. Really well done, and where I thought this movie was going. Another movie I thought was a clever language switch was Charlotte Grey where you have the recruiting for the team be done specifically for people who can speak French, then as they are parachuting in, the two kids laughing and singing in French, so when everyone continues able to converse while in English you know it's actually in French.

This idea about input and output in creativity is actually very deep, Ryan. The best writers, artists, directors are those, who can reflect the real life in their work. People usually call them geniuses. If you are an author it is important to remember, that you are doing your stuff not only for you, but for the audience, and if the reflection of the world in your work will resonate with people's reflection, your work will become immortal in the mind of humanity.
