Having listened a few times to your analysis, I cannot disagree with what you say...until your last line:. "we don't get to hear her become a hero" . I respectfully disagree. Like many things in life, it (status as a hero) "sneaks up on us". We don't hear her become a hero UNTIL the last 45-90 seconds of the movie when the music builds from the more placid Themyscria Theme to the BvS Wonder Woman Theme; she IS now the hero, Wonder Woman. (The END music during the animated production company credit is particularly striking, again Themyscria toned, thus saying, at least to me:. So there! I am both:... Wonder Woman AND Diana)

There is a solution : You know the piece used in the final fight between Diana and Aries is cauled lighting strikes. The few first seconds starts with the Amazon theme, but then at 1 : 15 they started to put some electric cello and mix them up, and by the time goes the electric cello becomes lowder and the Amazon theme starts be playing in major with the "is she with you ?" theme instruments (the leitmotif that was featured and used in the ww film to represent her as diana), then at 1 : 59 the cello becomes even more lowder and the Amazon theme translated to the leitmotif that represented her as Diana (that was featured in "is she with you ?"), and then at 2 : 56 the other leitmotif disappear and the only instrument we can hear is electric cello. That transformation in the piece represent her transformation as a hero. So, yeah we hear her become a hero ! And when the credits come they use the bvs theme to tell us : "ok, now the transformation is done. Diana is now the wonder woman you saw in bvs"
@cocosam96
@cocosam96 4 года назад
I'm two years late to the party but yes! The transition at 2:56 to her theme + the additional horns that mirror the Diana/love theme that's been building up throughout the rest of the song feels like the apotheosis of WW - and if I'm not mistaken, this is also when she "goodbye brother"s Ares. Her warrior side (the BvS theme) combined with her belief in love, to sum up who she is/the hero she has become: Wonder Woman
@aeolus9981
@aeolus9981 4 года назад
that is quite a good suggestion and makes sense, it would be quite interesting to have someone put this together
@knightsljx
@knightsljx 4 года назад
it's not about writing transitions in the music. it's that Diana has no apotheosis theme, a piece of music that represents what she has become. BvS basically wrote the music into a corner. BvS WW is supposed to be the hero Diana has become, the one that believes in and fights for the love and potential of mankind. So the BvS theme HAS to be that theme, because the events of WW movie has already happened by BvS. But the music ISN'T that theme. Once that happens, no one can unf**k it anymore. Which is the point of this video. I thought it as a hyperbole when Sideways said we don't hear her become Wonder Woman, it's not. I went back to the scene and holy crap, her apotheosis scene IS in silence.

I think the perfect solution for the climactic scene would’ve been to play the Hans Zimmer arrangement using the instruments from the Themyscira theme. It’s the perfect blending of the sound of individuality and power associated with Wonder Woman, and the sound of resilience and faith in others associated with Princess Diana: the full picture.
@RainDaemonic

I dunno, it seems like the main part of the hans zimmer theme arrangement isn't the melody but the instruments used itself.

A good composer can do that. You can turn every melody into every emotion. Just listen to the two "Hand Of Fate" parts from "Signs" by James Newton Howard and how he let's a 3note theme go through almost every emotion possible. Or how John Williams makes The Imperial March go all sad and fragile when Vader dies. Or how John Debney turns the comic relief song "I wanna Be Like You" into a horror/action theme in the Jungle Book remake. In a world where composers can pull this off, surely you can develope the WW theme, too. It's just, that today very few composers/filmmakers think like that. Claims like that baffle me just the same as when people go "Oh John Williams can't write dark music! He is only good for heroic orchestral stuff!" Like...have these people ever heard of Schindler's List? War Of The Worlds? Anakin's Dark Muthafucking Deeds? :D
@mattbradley5764

You made a lot of good points in this video and I enjoyed it, but the one thing that I didn't agree with was the conclusion where you said that she didn't have a defining moment where she both visually and musically became a hero. In the No Man's Land scene, she goes out of her way and overcomes nigh impossible odds to defeat the German soldiers and save that village. That scene had its own unique orchestral theme and it set her apart from all the other Amazons by showing that she will put her life on the line to defend the innocent. She put her mission to destroy Ares on hold to save these people, and it was a huge moment for her. I would definitely see that as the moment where she shows her compassion and strength and embodies the iconic heroine that is Wonder Woman.

I think what Sideways was mentioning that _in that particular scene_, we see her become a hero but the music doesn't support that transofrmation... until the credits roll. And while it's true that she becomes a hero on the battlefield, stepping far beyond what she was doing on Themiscyra, she did not fully become Wonder Woman until the last scenes, which is what Sideways was referencing.

You kinda missed the point there. When he says that "we see her become a hero but we don't hear her become a hero" he's not saying that the two aspects (visuals and music) don't coalesce at any point into a huge moment that defines her as a character, he's saying the exact opposite. He's saying that while she does have that moment, multiple of them, the theme they use there still isn't what becomes her theme. Had the score in that scene also become her theme for the rest of the movie that underscores all of her major character defining moments you'd have a point but the problem is that they don't.

What killed Wonder Woman for me was that she killed Ares and the war ended. Because that central lesson she's supposed to learn, that the problem is not the one guy, is actively disproven by what we see on screen. She kills Ares, in the next scene she is back in London and the war has ended. Basically, Steve saved the world, because he made her believe in love and that made her able to punch Ares well enough.

I can't help but suspect this was executive interference to give us all a happy ending to go home with. Imagine how much more powerful this film would have been if Diana killed Ares (fake-out that it's Ludendorff or not, I don't much care) and then the war still goes on. If you don't want to end the film in that emotional mire, you can set a final scene a few weeks later to remind everyone how the war actually ended. But so many character beats build up to this moment of realisation for Diana that all people have light and dark in them, and then... Nope it was just a mean old god everything's fine. What a waste.

I've said it before and I will continue to say it, the whole Ares angle felt really forced and hammy. It would have been so much more interesting and impactful if even if she HAD found The Real Ares, it turned out he'd been chilling letting humans do their thing because trying to outdo them was way too much effort. Forcing her to confront the reality that humans can be incredibly harmful without any divine interference would have allowed for some impressive character growth and reasonable doubt in humanity and all that, imo.

I find Diana having different pieces of music defining different aspects of her character instead of one defining theme that encompasses all of who she is very fitting, actually. If Batman and Superman are equal but opposite extremes (as I’ve heard some put it), then Wonder Woman falls somewhere in the middle, and has a lot more complexity to her because of that. Unlike Batman or Superman, she doesn’t have an issue with killing, but she also looks for a peaceful solution whenever possible. She began her film as a naive, rather simple character and learned about all the shades of gray, so having her music reflect that lack of simplicity-of black and white good and evil-actually works pretty well.

When John Williams first scored Star Wars, he explicitly called what later became the Force Theme "Ben's Theme." It was Lucas who led to the expansion of the theme's meaning, by asking Williams to use it in the "Binary Sunset" scene, which Williams had originally scored with Luke's Theme (which itself later became a generalized "Star Wars Theme"). Darth Vader also had a personal theme (it plays, e.g., under the "Holding her is dangerous" scene in the first film), but Williams didn't care for it much, and replaced it with the Imperial March from the time of The Empire Strikes Back onward.

I believe you have forgotten Wonder Woman is a demigod. 'No Man's Land' is the best theme for Wonder Woman. When you hear the music, you are completely enveloped inside a divine force hovering around. A heavenly force that completely defines Wonder Woman as a DemiGod. As you hear the music starts slowly then gradually amplifies. I think the power created in No Man's Land's theme greatly amplifies Wonder Woman's capability not just a hero but a solid symbol of all positive forces that only humans can imagine. Wonder Woman on that No Man's Land's scene is completely portrayed as a positive force. She's a force.

The problem is, all that No Man's Land sounds like IS force. It's "badass," it's "awesome," and NOTHING else. It doesn't sound Greek, like her origin. It doesn't sound heroic, in the sense of being a force specifically of good. It just sounds badass, and I guess a little tribal/ancient. It would work equally well as the theme of Gamora, or Scarlet Witch, or Poison Ivy, or even Thor. If your theme could apply equally well to a dozen other characters (both hero and villain), then it's not worthy of a character as beloved as Wonder Woman.

Simao Pereira Her being a woman is part of her character but not part of who she is. Does WW fight for women everywhere and for equality? No. Her values are justice and forgiveness and all that good stuff. Even in the film WW never really acts feminine, and she's never seen saving people specifically because they're women. She fights for humanity's right to exist, not for underprivileged minorities.

Well, Diana's femininity IS a part of her, even if it's not her most central trait. So, putting some feminine traits into her theme would have been just as fitting as putting the sound of bat-wings into the Dark Knight trilogy's soundtracks. The decision to use a cello (a string instrument, associated with femininity) for her theme is actually really inspired, as the video says.

It got me thinking. Iron Man - wears a iron suit. Batman - wears a bat costume Aquaman - lives in the sea or smth Superman - is super. First part is adjective, not a noun. Wonder Woman - also a adjective and a noun but in my opinion represents more being a woman, not being wonderful. So writing a theme about Batman that represents him being a man would not be the right idea. Writing a theme about Superman that represents him being a man would not be entirely wrong idea, but it should be about being super. Writing a theme about Wonder Woman that represents her being a woman would be the right way in my opinion.

@Wuffskers 7 лет назад
I disagree, I don't think she represents being a woman I think she actually DOES represent being wonderful. She is not preoccupied with gender issues, she is completely unbiased and is almost the embodiment of being unbiased. She doesn't represent women clashing against patriarchal oppression or anything of the sort, she is pure compassion for everything, men, women, children, even animals. She's basically a paragon of compassion and empathy that all humans should strive to achieve and that they all look to with wonder.

All perfectly said but ONE thing: the softer motif in the BvS Wonder Woman piece is Clark and Lois's theme - it's in Man of Steel and carries over to BvS. In BvS, that motif is played when Lois goes on her side quest to get the kryptonite spear. It has nothing to do with Wonder Woman as a character BUT... if it's something that RGW heard and modified for his WW score, at least it all sounds cohesive within the DCEU between the two (or three) films!
@joelmole3157
@joelmole3157 4 года назад
There is one element I disagree with you on and it's where she actually becomes Wonder Woman. I believe she becomes Wonder Woman in the No Man's Land scene because for once, she isn't going after Ares. She's going after a village in danger simply because they needed help and it's truly inspiring. If you'll notice, that's also the first time they use the BvS theme because that's not only the first time we see her fight in costume but also the first time we see her fighting for something other than the death of Ares. Heck her defining line isn't 'I believe in love' but it's actually this exchange right before she goes out to No Man's Land: Steve: "We can't save everyone. This is not what we came here to do." Diana: "No. But it's what I'm going to do." To me, that is Wonder Woman. Someone who doesn't fight out of guilt or revenge but because it's the right thing to do.

This is a great analysis! However, at 12:05 you mention the "new" Wonder Woman cue originating in "Is She With You?" I don't think this is correct because that cue in "Is She With You?" is actually something we hear in Man of Steel (check out "Krypton's Last" and "Launch"). Furthermore, this part of the score plays in BvS when Clark hears Lois drowning during the fight and goes to save her, reenforcing that this is actually Clark's cue. Just a small correction, but I love the video! I really appreciate someone discussing movie scores with the same enthusiasm I have for them.

Wow! I just had an epiphany! Or maybe just an ordinary piphany, I'm not sure yet. But: You give the example of the "love theme" being played when Leia rescues Han. I then imagined the force theme playing instead - and the scene gets a TOTALLY different vibe. This scene would have been about the force guiding Leia to rescue Han in the interest of the greater picture, NOT about them actually caring for another. And you get this, instantly! It sets this scene in so much context, just by playing a "small theme". Mind blown.

Another awesome video! Correction though: The emotional string part in "Is She with You" is actually Clark and Lois' theme (and was part of Superman's theme in Man of Steel). So that isn't really apart of Wonder Woman's character. However, what IS cool is that Rupert Gregson Williams (himself a protege of Hans Zimmer and his style) writes in that same style of music, so there's a sense of continuity between the two film's scores. Cool right!?! Also, after some more thought, I disagree with the conclusion you reach at the end of the video. I thought the music underscoring Diana defeating Ares was perfect as THE Wonder Woman theme. I see nothing wrong with a character having two themes defining different parts of their character. It would be NICE if we had one complete theme, but I don't think it's a film score sin that WW has these two different themes for her.

I think the 'BvS Wonder Woman theme' you showed was actually Superman's theme from both BvS and MoS (the one called 'Is She With You?')You hear that theme in the MoS soundtrack, so I think it was carried across from that film.

I think the film did do a good job in the end. Not all films need to have perfect score. This had now almost iconic fight theme for her and the amazon theme and the softer Wonder Woman theme for the more charcater driven stuff. Sure you could have added a theme or instrument for Steve and the rest and combined that with the fight and WW theme in the end to create some perfect theme but I think the music was still used well. Great video in any case. And I still agre that BVS is to blame and I wonder if Aquaman's theme is going to suffer form is seeing him in the Justice League diets too.

I think the electric cello would be taken more as connected to WW's fighting style most of all as a warrior given the distinct thing about her is between the trinity she's the one who uses skillfully hand to hand combat rather than gadgets and raw power alone. At least that's what I see it as. That way it's still just a part of her and seeing as each of these themes are in fact a part of her they probably could have created a variation of the theme to represent her heroic transformation or maybe went back and used some warm brass as the final theme. That way it could represent her for this one scene as just her transformation whilst still maintaining the electric cello theme for the 2nd movie. It also makes sense for her to have many themes as opposed to one given she has so many contrasting concepts to balance that other characters just don't have. She must balance feminism, truth, justice, love, individualism, and utilitarianism all of which can really contradict each other in many ways. They'll need to do a grey area where they can't exclusively theme ideas or characters but an overlapped mixture of both that outlines the connection. Thematic variation and motivic transformation will be their friend in that case.

This really made me wonder if the love that's talked about in the film really isn't "love" as we define it in modern times, but "love" as was defined by people like the Greeks, agape, eros, storge, etc. It would make a lot of sense given that Diana is an Amazon, a tribe from Greece, and the concept of "agape" seems to align much more with Diana's arc since it's defined as an unconditional love for humanity and for creation itself, something which Ares completely and utterly rejects.

12:10 That melody doesn’t belong to Wonder Woman though. It‘s way back from Man of Steel. You can hear it (sometimes with variations) in the tracks „Goodbye my Son“ and „Flight“ for example. Although what‘s interesting is the fact that whenever it appears, humans are the center of discussion in the moment in which it plays during the movie.

Marker 10:27 - I 100% agree that putting that theme in too much would wreck both the theme and the movie as a whole. Well now we need a video about 'Themyscira' from WW84, because I think its the perfect representation of what the character is supposed to be, though it does use a lot of brass which, as you said, is historically linked with male figures. Its also likely the most joyful/ positive thing Hans Zimmer has ever written and feels unique from him.

oouuuch.....that snippet from "Is She With You?" which you equaled with the Rupert WW-theme is NOT her theme. It's a variation if Zimmer's 2-note Superman motif. People have to get off the assumption that "Is She With You?" is "Wonder Woman's Theme". It's not. It's a 5-minute underscore piece FEATURING Wonder Woman's theme, but also other themes. You can tell because when that motif plays, it's during Clark rescuing Lois. It's THEIR moment, not WW's. The new motif by RGW is a different, yet similar sounding thing that got temptracked from LAST SAMURAI
@manyperspectives2660
@manyperspectives2660 6 лет назад
Well, it is at least a nice coincidence that the line "Is she with you?" is said about Wonder Woman in BvS. But I think I can say that we cannot speak for the intentions of the composer. We can however, speak for the effectiveness of the music in affecting us as we'd like to be, given all of the context. And I feel Rupert did quite well in expressing what needed to be expressed about Diana's character. Like most incredible women are, Diana was multifaceted. She was passionate and strong, yet emotional and vulnerable. She believed in her responsibilities, yet changed her perception to best fit how she could adhere to them. And I have no complaints even about the fight scene with Aires. While she is strong and determined in her fight against him, the lack of theme leaves her more vulnerable to interpretation. And I feel she rose to the occasion as a (fictional) person to become someone admirable.
@manyperspectives2660
@manyperspectives2660 6 лет назад
My instinct is to doubt that it was temp-tracked. But I am evidently biased. Even if it were, that says nothing for the music's effectiveness. As a musician, I paraphrase a common notion; much of creativity in music is theft.
@goth_fraggle
@goth_fraggle 6 лет назад
I am going to reply to both of your comments at once, to make it easier :) Yes, the piece is called "Is She With You?" and that line is muttered during that same scene and that line refers to WW...but this doesn't say anything. The fact remains, that the 5 minute track "Is She With You?" is NOT her theme. The melody played by the electric cello in that track is her theme. This is a very common mistake. There is a difference between a theme track and an underscore track. For example: the 3 minute suite "Leia's Theme" from "Star Wars A New Hope" is not a track you can hear in the movie. It is a concert arrangement of a melody (theme) that is assigned to Leia's character. A melody that appears mutliple times in the rest of the score. But thos are underscore pieces. Nobody would call "Imperial Attack" Leia's theme, just because her theme appears in it. Same with "Is She With You?". This is an udnerscore track in which MULTIPLE themes appear. Wonder Woman's, Batman's and Superman's. So how can the whole track be "Wonder Woman's Theme", if the themes of other characters appear? The track is called "Is She With You?" not because it is her theme, but because it plays in the scene where that sentence is muttered and yes, that scene is very WW-centric. But people have to freaking stop calling that entire piece "her theme", because then we get mistakes like the one in the video, where someone thinks that a reprise of Superman's theme is suddenly part of Diana's theme. This is not an opinion, that is simpyl wrong. Just watch the scene: The section that Sideways points out as the inspiration of the theme Rupert Gregson-Williams wrote for WW appears when Superman saves Lois. So how can it relate to Wonder Woman? Also, that motif already appears in Man Of Steel, when Wonder Woman was far away. It's Superman's two note calling card, just played slowly. It has absolutely nothing to do with Wonder Woman. And well..your interpretation ofd Wonder Woman as a multifaceted character is nice and accurate but irrelevant to my comment :D The theme Rupert Gregson-Williams uses during "No Man's Land" is not related to the Superman theme we here in "Is She With You?". And I never said that temp-tracking is bad. It just happens everywhere in Hollywood and Rupert implied that he had to rewrite certain scenes multiple times and that the director/editor/producers were totally fixed on a certain thing. I interpret this as "They wanted me to stick to the temp track" and I could totally see that temp track being "Last Samurai", as it's a very famour and popular score. I don't blame Rupert for it. He had a job and when they tell you to imitate another piece, you have to. My favourite score of last year, by my favourite composer ever "Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them", is full of temp tracks (Edward Scissorhands, Order Of The Phoenix and freaking Saw of all things). Temp tracking happens to even the best. It's not something the composer does. Rupert didn't sat down in his studio "Wow, I got to write the first big screen iteration of the biggest female superhero ever! Now let's rip off Hans Zimmer from 2007!" I am very confident that this did not happen. Jenkins or whoever just told him to rip it off. For more in-depth thoughts, I will link you to my full review of the "Wonder Woman" soundtrack. FTR, I pretty much liked it, but it seriously has problems. behindtheaudio.com/2017/07/soundtrack-review-rupert-gregson-williams-wonder-woman-2017/

I enjoy your insights. I mentioned my interpretation of Wonder Woman's character because I felt it was the more important than the opinions you were expressing. I see now that they were not opinions but observations based on a knowledge of soundtrack terminology. And as someone who has always loved movie and videogame soundtracks, I'm glad to have been corrected. I suppose then what Sideways should have said was more along the lines of "Just listen to the similarity between this section of 'Is She with You' and the Amazonian theme from WW." Which may or may not be relevant anyway because that part of the song doesn't play with Wonder Woman on screen at the same time. Everything else in the video seems to make sense to me though, but that is a nice, revealing point.

I know I'm no expert on this, just a random commenter, but would it be possible to split up a theme like that? Keep the bass hits and such for an Amazon theme, and add in a simplified version of the melody for the protection of man? Because honestly, it reminds me of Spiderverse and its what's up danger. Like it was reverse engineered. And now I'm kind of disappointed this never happened.

I think the Wonder Woman theme is perfect, and unmistakable. As soon as it starts you know she's about to kick someone's ass. In BvS Wonder Woman had a line at the end about leaving the world of mankind to explain her absence from the world, which conflicts with Wonder Woman's origin where she has a love and respect for mankind. So there is a missing link that will hopefully get addressed in later films. Snyder portrayed her as a Badass warrior and didn't have time to develop her character because she should have already been developed by that point of intervention.. Jenkins showed her naiveté and capacity for compassion. Both portrayals were amazing and demonstrated her many dimensions. quite well I might add. In the DCU its as if she had parents from two different worlds. Snyder made her Fierce and Jenkins added Grace; just what an Amazon princess should be. so it is only natural that she isn't relegated to just one theme.
