I'm glad we got one last great kilmer performance before he got sick. Most underrated actor I can ever remember. The fact that most people don't even know who he is is tragic
Val Kilmer should of been nominated for and Oscar for this role, so nailed this role, like watching it you feel like you are back in that time period with Holmes. Criminally underrated movie.
I absolutely love this film. The cast is amazing. The soundtrack is perfect. Gordon Lightfoot's song as the movie ends gives me chills. Everyone, please watch this movie. But only if you love quality film making.
Until I seen all these comments I thought nobody knew about rhis flick! Its all old favorite of mine for the reasons you bring up. The sets, wardrobes, scores.
If you're a true crime aficionado, you owe yourself a viewing of this film. Flew under the radar when it was originally released. Val turns the magic back on reminiscent of his turn as Doc Holliday from ten years previous.
Travis Dorsey so sad to see him on the news & internet & what he's going through right now, which I really don't know what his medical condition is ,everything I read is said to be a hoax
Yeah I've always thought he does a awesome job playing real people. He just totally throws himself into it and can practically become them. I read that Sharon Holmes was creeped out by how much he looked and talked like him. Especially the bath scene. Said it was just like John was the one sitting there
Boogie Nights was the fantasy, but Wonderland was the real reality of porn, with an incredible performance by Val Kilmer playing the king of porn in John Holmes. For LA was a trully dark dark place in the early 80s, with so much pure cocaine around !!
Damn, this guy! From his flawless performance as Doc Holliday, to Jim Morrison, and then as John Holmes. Is there any historical figure that Val can't do?
Several years ago I ordered the $9.99 single disc DVD from Amazon and by mistake they sent me the rare 2-disc Special Limited Edition set featuring the documentary 'Wadd: The Life & Times of John Holmes'. True story.
Maybe it's a morbid fascination, but I love how the movie brings the victims back to life, if even just a short look into what those lives were like. That 'macabre mystery' that just draws a viewer into the dark perverse world that it was. Excellent job of catching the atmosphere of the year......making the viewer feel the heat.....smelling the air of long ago. Have watched it many times....
I agree it is A very underated film. And it is great to show the victims personalities. It often gets overlooked and they always talk about John Holmes
Why? Val Kilmer hated the guy, he just wanted to work with Lisa Kudrow because he loved her acting and he thought Kate Bosworth's acting was also interesting.
MP R this was actually based off of the Wonderland murders. Boogie Nights was not. Boogie Nights was very, very loosely based on John Holmes. The fact that he had a humungous cock was pretty much the only truth to Boogie Nights.
This movie is much better than the trailer! And the story is only like 2 chapters from the book by Kate Schiller called "the road to wonderland " . It's a must read is you liked this movie
Good movie and apparently close to reality as Dawn Schiller was involved, and with Holmes dead, she is the best person to shed light on the whole terrible story
Just on the off chance that some Val Kilmer fan's haven't seen everything, another one for the library is The Salton Sea. Another great cast there too.
Val Kilmer just wanted to reflect John Holmes antisocial demeanor, he couldn't stand John Holmes, that guy was 33 years old when he took up with Dawn who was just 16 years old, he forced her to work as a prostitute to get money for his drug addiction.
I love the, You had it all but now it's gone movie moment between Lisa Cudrow and John Holmes' character. The you had it all but fucked it up movie trope is my favorite, followed by the Girlfriend or Wife telling their partner how incompetent they are. The man confronts the truth of his failures. My 2 Favorite Movie Tropes, especially if you play it for camp value and make it over the top, but in this case, this Film is sad, tragic and serious.
It's quite eerie how Val kilmer looks like John Holmes ,the hair and clothes style seeing it's early 80s iln LA ..wat a cast Dylan McDermott,Kate bosworth ted Levine and friends lisa kudrow.this came out same year charlize therons monster did and they are both true storys...very sad that val kilmer got sick ...
Robert Wagner's daughter is one of the supporting players in this picture; I'm surprised that she hasn't had a bigger career, considering RJ and Natalie are her parents.
@@jerome5ify "Al Bundy's daughter" (Christina Applegate) played Susan Launius; RJ and Natalie's daughter played Barbara "Butterfly" Richardson, David Lind's lover.
Val Kilmer's comment about John Holmes was, " I couldn't understand why two such beautiful women were tied up with his guy, how any of them could've fallen in love with him!"
*This movie was hard to follow because it would jump from one scene to another. In one scene everyone had been murdered in the Wonderland house, then in the next scene everyone was alive and doing drugs. It became confusing to keep up.*
I always wondered how much truth there was to this movie. Im very familiar with the actual crime, people, and trials. But some of the people are virtually impossible to find on google. And as far as the murders, they are also very hard to find anything about online.
Hey, I came to this video because just last night I was at a talk by Dawn Schiller. She was the girl that Holmes kidnapped and prostituted. She said she doesn't blame any of the actors, but she did not like how her part of the movie was portrayed. She said it made it seem like there was an at least someone amicable relationship between her and Holmes, when really it was human trafficing. He took advantage of her when she was underage and in poverty. He got on her good side by providing, then eventually got her addicted to drugs and entirely dependent on him, at which point he became violently controlling and began selling her on the streets. Dawn now has a book and she's a fantastic speaker, bringing attention to human trafficing.
It would be great to know what really happened to David Lind: some say he died in 1995 from an overdose of heroin, but there are rumors that he faked his death to enter the witness protection program. Allegedly he was cremated, but there's no evidence
@@axlpisa If David Lind is still alive, he probably is in the witness protection program. According to various accounts, Eddie Nash was evil. I read somewhere that Nash died in 2014.
One of the most underrated movie of all time. Why didn't people like this? It has shitty ratings on Rotten Tomatoes and IMDB. Everybody like Boogie Nights. Why is this so much worse?
Great movie, just wonder what was true and what wasn’t? 81 was beginning for coke to be king in that decade. And it was the best time in American history. Decade of decadence
Val is HOT....and he looks like Jim morrison.. don't get me wrong.... ..val is a great actor..but he doesn't look like john c holmes..so,why was he cast to play#JohnHolmes!??
chengfu saechao because that is what a great actor does they take someone you can never imagine them as being and they do the role and he did i cannot watch this film ever
