This scene is distressing, but you honestly can't blame Mr. Wonka. He won't be around much longer, he's had people go behind his back for profit before, and this factory means a lot to him, and right now, he hasn't found anybody who is genuinely interested or passionate for carrying on his business, so if I were him, I'd be upset too.

Apparently Charlie's reaction to him shouting is genuine. He wasn't warned that he was going to get shouted at, he is actually upset here xD

"WRONG, sir! WRONG!" Willy Wonka as a cashier would be my hero.

Most adults, upon rewatching, realize that ol' Grandpa Joe was the real antagonist in this movie. Lied about being bedridden, didn't care about other kids getting slaughtered left right and center during the tour, trespassed, stole from the factory, contributed to the delinquency of a minor, lied some more, projected with stunning lack of self-awareness (calling Wonka a "crook" after just having been cold-ass busted for stealing!), and when Wonka came clean and told Charlie he had won and could come to live at the factory, selfishly jumped in with, "And me too?" I'm pretty sure he fondled an Oompa-Loompa when nobody was looking, too. You suck, Grandpa Joe.

I actually cry watching this scene because Gene Wilder’s performance just feels too real and he genuinely feels upset at me. On top of the fact his shouting was improvised without Charlie’s actor knowing and his scared reaction being real, it just makes feel that much more legit.

Legally and ethically, Wonka is in the right here. They did steal from him, and they intentionally disobeyed his instructions. That old man had a lot of nerve to claim the moral high ground, as though Charlie being an idiot kid excuses him from being held accountable for his actions.

Today is the day Gene said "good day sir!" to the world. RIP Gene Wilder

I really appreciate how gene wilders performance here isn’t a kids movie performance, it’s a film you can watch at any age and still enjoy because the acting isso good

I love how Wonka segues into Latin and says, "IT'S ALL THERE, BLACK AND WHITE, CLEAR AS CRYSTAL!" I laugh every time.

None of this was in Dahl's book, but I think this scene makes the story better. It shows that Charlie had to really earn his place as the heir to factory rather than just be the last kid remaining.

This is probably one of my favorite scenes in cinematic history. Gene wilder really did something special in this movie

"I said good day sir!" Can get you out of any legal situation.

Man, the anger in his eyes is so palpable. You'd think that taking the fizzy drink was some sort of monsterous betrayal. And Charlie looks hurt by Wonka's outburst.

For anyone curious on what Wonka says to him, it isn't gibberish, its Latin: "fax mentis incendium gloria cultum, et cetera et cetera... memo bis punitor delicatum.' Which means "The torch of the mind lights the path to glory . . . I am mindful [that] the crime is punished in two ways." "Punished in two ways", which Wonka means, both the physical, and meta-physical. 1) punished by losing the material chocolate, and 2) punished meta-physically by living with the torment of your mistake.

RIP Gene Wilder (1933-2016). The pure imagination of your film career will continue through generations after generations of cinema, acting and comedy. An absolutely genuine actor. Thank you Gene.

As much as I feel sorry for Grandpa Joe and Charlie in this scene, I have to say that Willy Wonka was 100% in the right when he angrily refused to give them their reward at the end of the tour. They did steal the Fizzy Lifting Drink and disobeyed him, so they did break the rules. However, Charlie was wise enough to realize that he and Grandpa Joe had done wrong, and being a good-natured kid, gave the Everlasting Gobstopper back to Mr. Wonka, just as a way of showing that he wasn't going to betray him, thus he and Grandpa Joe got off scot-free and it turned out to be a happy ending for the three of them after all.

I start reciting this scene whenever i get into those really heated debates and i end up winning it

I love this scene so much ... I can quote it word for word from memory. And it really does bring your emotions to the surface because you're rooting for Charlie the whole time, and you think he's getting screwed, but then you realize that they did, in fact, break the rules. Such a classic, Gene Wilder is amazing.

I pull so much deeper meaning from this scene, it alludes to life and love. If you break the terms and conditions you lose. You get nothing. Good day sir! In life you can’t expect the prize with out following the rules and at the end of the day if you break the rules, you get nothing. Don’t expect someone to give you the prize if you can’t follow the rules.

I remembered this scene from when I was young - like six or eight - and this scene was the scariest - someone you looked up to and trusted. I understand it worked out in the end but the acting was glorious

Gene's work in that movie changed my life forever. It was a perfect preparation for what was to come in the early 1980s. Thanks Mr. Wilder, and good day sir.

Amazing acting by Gene Wilder!

I love how intense this scene is that I only just noticed most of the items in the scene are cut in half for no apparent reason. The hat stand and the lamp, sure, that's just style. But the cup and saucer and ashtray? The phone! Half a safe, what the hell? Even half a magnifying glass!

For those of you who have only seen this part of the movie, Mr. Wonka wasn't really mad at Charlie....he was testing him to see how loyal Charlie would be to him even after he screamed at him.

Pretty much sums up No Man's Sky's ending

This scene just shows how dedicated to showing authenticity he was in his role. It’s just one example of how wonderful his performance in this movie was. Without Gene Wilder, this movie couldn’t dream of being half as good. Rest In Peace.

This scene always stuck a chord with me even as a kid, the whole film Wonka is this eccentric and flamboyant man who despite several kids before Charlie who vandalise/steal/ignore what he tells them and all of them are mildly reprimanded and he still helps them afterwards, yet Charlie is the only child who is severely told off and angrily scolded for actions influenced by his grandfather who as his guardian is responsible for this whole predicament, it really educates kids that what seem like harmless and playful activities can have bad consequences, like a teacher screaming at you for wandering off during a school trip to when you grow up and your boss giving you a really hard time for not completing your work. It’s only when Charlie returns the gobstopper choosing integrity and honesty over what slugworth could’ve payed him thousands for does Wonka realise he isn’t a bad kid who can take ownership for his inadvertent wrongdoing and want to make amends does he change his mind, too many films have a cliche moral lesson behind them, but this is one that subtlety insinuates it and why no remake will ever surpass it

This was good, but I like Mr. Goldstriker’s cover better.

Even as I kid, I was on Wonka's side here. They did steal. Plain and simple. What pissed me off the most was the old man trying to make Wonka out to be the "greedy" bad guy for not giving them something that they pretty much surrendered once they took those sips. I never did like the grandpa in the movie, didn't read the contract and potentially almost got himself and his grandson killed because of his childish antic. Even after they lost, Joe wanted Charlie to sell the Gobstopper out of resentment and spite toward Wonka. It was easy to see why Wonka wanted a child to inherit his factory, adults can be conniving and manipulative but at least children have a shot before they shape themselves into the adults they take after. Joe may have been the least rotten of the adults, but he was still childish in the end.

Love that line. "SO YOU GET NOTHING! YOU LOOSE! GOOD DAY, SIR!" Oh Wonka your comedy and Memes will LIVE FOR EVER!!!!

Note that Wonka was looking at Grandpa Joe during most of the outburst. 1. Because Gene Wilder didn't like to yell at little kids. 2. Because the whole fizzy lifting drink theft was Grandpa Joe's idea. Not only did he encourage his grandson to steal, but he also almost killed him when it came to the giant fan above them.

Can we all take a moment to appreciate how Charlie just gives Wonka the Gobstopper? After an explosion like that, anyone would have sold it the highest bidder.

This is one of the greatest movies with a moral story to it. When you screw up not if....OWN IT! Dont throw the blame on somebody else like grandpa joe did. I'll get even with that Wonka if it's the last thing I do if slugworth wants a Gobstopper he"ll get one. Charlie owned it

I love how Grandpa Joe calls Willy a con man and a crook. Meanwhile, he's the one who pretended to be bedridden for 20 years. While his family lived on cabbage water and his 12 year old grandson worked to help support the family. He encouraged Charlie to break the rules and they both almost got killed because of it .Not to mention, Charlie is the only kid who broke the rules and got off without any consequences. Willy Wonka was 100% in the right here.
