I felt the same way about Timothee, he never got me to believe he was Wonka, I couldn't forget he was acting. Even Hugh Grant ,as an Oompa loompa, got me more invested hahaha, I was like how the hell does an Oompa loompa has a british accent lol.

Agreed on the miscast. 3 fave parts of the trailer are the "No Daydreaming" sign, runaway Rowan and Hugh's "Too late... I've started dancing now. Once we've started we can't stop" I can see that being a new TikTok thing.

I never even got down with Depp's take. Didnt even know it went to the stage til this video. I just really loved the old one. It's always been the nostalgia and the music for me.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who saw this and was like "Timothee ain't it". He has BRIEF moments of Wonka (like the lightbulb moment) but overall he is too straight-laced to go full tilt Wonka.

Agree with the miscasting comment. Hollywood needs to take more of a chance on 'actors' and not just 'movie stars' who do well in focus groups and have high social media scores. For me, this film should be full of wonder with a sense of almost mythology - something that would wow audiences. We'll see, but overall, this 1st trailer feels full of spiritless spectacle and like a dozen other movies, some of which you mentioned.

Yeah gotta agree about Timothy. His first few line reads in the trailer I was instantly like “oh! That was..not how I woulda read that line” lol didn’t have that wonka flourish.

The original seemed so rooted in the real world, with the exception of the oompa loompas. And being that at the time there was only so much that could be done with the film. This gives me the “we are building a universe “ feel. I definitely see where those harry potter vibes come from. Its like when i watched the first Fantastic Beast trailer

Totally agree with the assessment that Chalamet feels like he’s just playing Wonka than actually becoming him. The performance feels stilted to me. Gene Wilder’s portrayal can never be topped imo!

Grace I read that director, Paul King hired Timothee Chalamet without an audition because Timothee had videos on the internet prior to becoming an actor. I gotten very emotional when watching this trailer because of late great Gene Wilder and my childhood. Hugh Grant is awesome Oompa-Loompa.

My favourite Chalamet performance so far was as Henry V in The King. He's good at brooding. And I had no idea that he was American in that movie because his English accent was great.

I’m English and his English accent was so good I couldn’t believe he was American when I checked who he was. He is so good at brooding roles. Not sure he can do silly willy but I’ll wait and see.

To see Timothee Chalamet sound so goofy and quirky, makes me laugh! I mean in Dune and other things I see him, he seems so serious and reserved. This is whole different view of him and I like it! It looks so cute with the music playing in the background and seeing all the colors, musical numbers! Perfect Christmas movie! 😂🍫🍬🍭🎩

I had the same reaction to Timothee Chalamet. From the start it felt like I was just watching Timothee Chalamet pretending to be Willy Wonka rather than him becoming Wonka. But I loved Paddington so I’ll def watch it. 😅

I had no expectations for Wonka then I saw "From the Director of Paddington" and im SOLD. the trailer being great also helped lol. I already know my family is gonna love this come this Christmas

Thank you for being able to put your finger on the thoughts and feelings I couldn't quite cobble together. The 'scratch that, reverse it' came off like a line reading and was missing a Wonka touch, a quirk, a smile, a sneer, some kind of emotion.

Weirdly this trailer reminds me of the recent Cruella movie, which I adored! Maybe it's the colors and the main character trying to make a name for themselves in a particular industry.

Hugh Grant as an Umpahlumpah … I’m there on opening morning. TChalamet seems a bit young for Wonka but perhaps this is an origin story. For me, Gene Wilder will always be Wonka … but then I enjoyed Johnny Deep too. This trailer made me cry. .. “Here we go, Mama” … so I think it has heart. Can’t wait.

It’s very pretty and whimsical. The humor was okay and the movie is too self aware. Timothee’s acting here is the same problem I had with Depp’s version. It looks like they are playing a caricature of Wonka which is weird since he isn’t a real person lol.

But people do remember that Wilhelm Wonka is not a "good guy". He makes it in to the excentric cathegory , because he is super rich and that is it. He murders people and finds it funny, he keeps slaves etc. No idea how a prequel is suppose to "save" that.

Couldn’t agree more with the miscast comment. I really like the LOOK of Timothee in this role but in this trailer he didn’t seem like the character. I was just thinking of his real life persona the whole time.

Your suspicions might have been right on this one Grace. I have to agree with your assessment with the treatment and it's translation on the big screen. But I will still see it in theaters to get the...shall we say..."the full picture".
