I can understand how we need the quarter inch seam on the top so we have a nice point, but no one ever shows how to keep the side points once something is sewn to them. Most people have nice points after sewing the BLOCK, but how do we sew them together on the sides and still have points!?

After 2 days of searching you tube to figure out why my flying geese aren't coming out correctly - you nailed my issue! This is my first time making the 4 at a time geese and I was getting those little fabric triangles at the top of some of them but not all of them. Now I know why. So back to the cutting board so I can finish making 30 more flying geese for me quilt. thank you!

Thanks for showing us how to get better results. I have experienced all of the problems you addressed. The geese are one of my biggest problems, so I just keep trying. With this video at least I can see where to look to see where I'm going wrong. Haven't tried the oversize method, but it maybe the solution I need. You are a great teacher and look forward to more tutorials.

Thank you so much Veronica! The oversized method really saved me from a lot of problems. In my opinion, the bit of extra fabric is worth it so that I can trim away any mistakes! Thanks for watching!

Same here. So many samples from scraps. I have 2 twin quilts in the works. Just adding geese borders to both of them. Once I finish these, Iam so over these birds. Sad, but I’ve done everything to exact mind boggling precision & have odd issues with the sides to have 1/4 seam allowances.

I love flying geese but struggle with getting them to end up even, especially on the 4 at a time method. I think I will try starting with bigger pieces, as you suggest; it is probably less fabric than the turn and flip (?) method. Thanks for the analysis and the tips. I would add that trimming accurately is also important. If you don’t use a block loc you will want to make sure the diagonal lines up on the 45° of your ruler.
@sugarstitchesquiltco
@sugarstitchesquiltco Год назад
Exactly!! Typically even with the stitch and flip method I still make them oversized so I have room to trim away any mistakes!

Hey Sugar Stitches! Thank you for the wonderful video, I have always done FG wrong and lived with it, but I don’t want to anymore. Long story short I just cut fabric for a quilt that is only FG by quilty love. In the pattern directions they suggest cutting the 4 small squares 1/8 inch larger. I did this but it did not say to cut the bigger square larger…. I am feeling unsure how to sew these now. My test blocks are coming up too short on the bottom/side opposite the point. I do have the wing clipper ruler and the June Tailor perfect HST ruler. All the fabric is cut, what would you advise in this situation? I could cut them to a smaller size and it would not affect this pattern, it’s a very simple one…

Saludos y bendecida noche 🙏😇😴

Can’t get the 1/4 inch or scant 1/4 to perfection so my flying geese are too small, too big, or wonky. Thanks for the info. I will keep trying.

The information you provide in your video is just what I was hoping to find. It seems like when I’m making practice flying geese they are near perfect. Unfortunately after investing in fabrics and spending time cutting, as I’m assembling my geese they are less than perfect. Using the 4 at a time method and the wing clipper tool, I seem to be having issues with the right side top of my sky. It’s too short by less than an eighth of an inch, and I’m feeling discouraged. Thank you for providing these helpful tips. I will keep trying. Question: I’ve been teaching myself to quilt for almost 3 years and still consider myself a beginner. Where would you suggest I start if I were to take your online courses?

Glad to have you here! Making them oversized really helps then you can trim away the problems!! I am currently revising my courses and adding a few new ones soon (including flying geese!) Make sure your signed up for the updates on my site and I’ll be sending out news when the courses open soon.

Crazy isn’t it!? I think it’s because the size ratio is off and the small squares are too large. If you increase the size of the larger square you need to do the same for the smaller squares. That’s what my talent was 🤣
