Wood Bowl Turning Without A Chuck Woodturning Video
Is it possible to turn a wooden bowl without a chuck? The answer is yes! For various reasons, some people don't want to turn a wood bowl using a chuck.
In this video, I will share with you how to turn a wood bowl without a chuck. And the added bonus is I'll be using a very small amount of equipment in the process. So, if you're curious about turning bowls but haven't yet committed to the process by purchasing a four jaw chuck, try this technique to get your feet wet.
If you decide you like turning wood bowls, then you'll probably want to get a chuck to make the process a bit easier and more efficient. But in the meantime, watch and learn how to turn a bowl without a chuck.

This a wonderful, well explained method using the faceplate which comes with most lathes when new. No need to make that "exact tenon" for jaw check use. The face plate is very secure so no opportunity for the bowl to become a flying object, if proper screws are used.

Purely as an observer (subscribed), I’d say the end that you’re going to screw the faceplate onto could be hollowed out (not deep) just enough so that the faceplate is snug in there.. then, when you flip the bowl it should be almost true…. I don’t turn, but I’m fascinated with the techniques, and Kent’s knowledge and skills are incredible!

I've been turning since 1991. Primarily, turning small boxes, goblets and earrings. I'm sure I must have turned over a hundred bowls over those years and have never used a commercial wood holding chuck. I do use shop made Jam and Vacuum chucks though. Ya don't miss what ya never used! Like you, a Face Plate and Bowl Gouge does the job. Thank you for showing others how it's done, - step by step. Especially those "always" tense moments when parting off a perfect bowl. Good job Kent! Wakodahatchee Chris

The same way but with a glue block I'm pushing 70 and have been doing that since my days in high school I finally broke down and bought a 4 jaw chuck and literally turned a cherry burl bowl today with the thing 01/25/23 !!!😁 Why I didn't get one before now I'll never know it cut the turning time in half! Stubborn I guess my lathe is 83 Years old this year handed down to me from my grandfather I rebuilt it about 20 Years ago I'm a retired cabinet maker and contractor !!! LoL 👍

When I use a spur drive, I drill a hole a little larger than the diameter of the spur about 3/4” -1” into the wood. This acts as an extra safety measure when turning large pieces of wood. If the Spurs were to lose their grip in the wood, the hole would at least keep the blank on the lathe instead of flying off and potentially cause injury. Doing this is not going to hurt the blank since it will eventually be flipped around for the face plate mounting and the hole will be removed during the bowl hollowing process.

This is EXACTLY how I was taught to make bowls plates platters and lazy Susans in high school 58 years ago!!! By the way I'm using my grandfather's lathe and its 83 years old!!! Does a great job just as good as these new 6 thousand dollar ones!!! Inboard is only 9" but outboard is 38"s from center do the math 38 + 38 all the way to the floor if needed!!! Spindle to tail stock is 36 inches there really isn't much I can't do on this old girl!!!👍

Thank you once more for an extremely helpful and educational tutorial video, Kent. For me it is not just the three tool method, but your technique at each stage. The open flute is interesting where you take off the ridges inside the bowl, as I have learnt to be very afraid of an open flute inside a bowl. I go in with closed flute, ride the bevel and gradually open until it just starts to cut. Your advice on my method and the potential snags I might get would help me. Take care stay safe and please keep these invaluable detailed tutorials coming. From across the globe in South Africa, you are teaching the world to turn.

David, Thank you for writing. Yes, the open flute can be dangerous. However, pay attention when I use this technique. I only open the flute for very light finishing cuts and not when removing larger amounts of material. Keep practicing and you too will eventually feel more comfortable opening the flute as you progress. Happy Turning!

I've been turning bowls both with and without a 4 jaw chuck for a number of years. I really enjoyed this video as a review and to remind me of some of the bad habits I've developed! Great video for beginners and experienced turners as well.

It wouldn't have occurred to me to try this, but a youngster I've been mentoring a bit just got a beginner-lathe without any chuck. This may be something for him to try! Its nice to have a few great tools. Chuck w

The things you present are well done and it is a talent in itself. Slowly recovering from a few operations and my wife as well, this retired manual machinist is transitioning to small wood crafts to eventually make ends meet, and even be a blessing to others. I am starting from the ground up. Your presentations keep my interests alive as I make my first beefy carving table, and rebuild my first Delta lathe. Keep up the good work. You are a blessing to others.

Great video! There is a great deal to learn from you! I'm actually almost ready to take the step and buy a four jaw chuck but I got really comfortable using the faceplate. I've never worked with a four jaw chuck before but I presume, from the videos I watched, that I will save some time and some wood!👍

Go for it! The four-jaw chuck combined with the faceplate is a great combo. One I started with. Happy Turning!

Great video. Face plates are a very traditional method for turning items including bowls. The biggest downside is the holes left in the base.

Love the shape and the spalting. Spalting makes so called "junk wood" into amazing art. Thanks Mother Nature. In my area, we have a lot of fallen Chinese Elm with amazing spalting. Great video with every step to turn a bowl w/o a chuck. Thanks.

You are great. Love the video. We do get used to our tech toys as chucks and the variety of knives, we are spoiled and because narrow minded In a way. Watching your video it was an awakening! Oh yes that’s right! Well I get it. Try to use the basics at times. The thought at first was like turning with one hand and the left!! Very good tutorial. Thank you for showing me were the starting point is. I’m laughing out loud yes I’ll do that ...uh no.

This is how I was taught to turn at school in the early 70s... more years ago than I care to think about! Also with a face plate and green beize to cover the holes. Happy days... :-)

Hi Tony - I was also taught much like you, in the early 60s.. With a 16" D. x 5" thick blank, and 1/2" screws into the wood - I was convinced it would fly off... We also had a sneaky/neat way to fix the baize to hide the screw holes... but it needs a diagram to explain properly... I remember suggesting that we could use a metalworker's chuck... and the tutor sanctimoniously replied: "We don't do things like that, here..." lol

I don't recall being told about the 'jam-chuck' idea, back then - maybe our tutor was not a lathe devotee...

Great video, thank you. I'm new to turning and am struggling to get to grips with the chuck, so this method will helm me to get my cutting skills off the ground without risking damage.

Glad it helped. Be sure your chuck has dovetail angled jaws. All the other types of jaws tend to not grip very well. Happy Turning!
