After a long restoration duration the project is finally finished. The canoe required a ton of work however I believe the owner of this canoe will be quite pleased when it finally hits the water. Thanks for following along, commenting and liking the videos in this series. It has been a fun project and I look forward to the next project.

Great video series. I have a 1930's Old Town that I started restoring but life got in the way. I retire next spring and may return to it or reach out to you for your talent. Thanks for the informative videos. You are a craftsman.

Always nice to hear that someone found the video helpful. Is the Tremblay fiberglassed? Some of the Tremblays were built this way. Best of luck with your project. Enjoy!

The tremblay had canvas on it. I have built a strip canoe and glassed that boat. Looking forward to the experience of canvas. Thanks again for the information you shared..

@timbland2744 you are very welcome. Have a great time with your project. Canvassing a canoe is very rewarding especially when the final topcoat of paint is applied. It really is a beautiful thing.

Great videos on the canvas Canoe restoration you explain everything very good detail up until applying canvas sealant what product to use how to purchase the product how to apply it that’s all just wondering why
@mainetripper
@mainetripper Год назад
The canvas canoe filler product used was purchased from Northwoods Canoe Company. It is their proprietary blend. It is a canvas filler and not a sealer. The product is applied by applying with a brush and then rubbing it into the canvas weave by hand. Working in approx 3 ft sections at a time. The filler requires 3 continuous coats although the first coating is done as previously mentioned in 3 ft sections followed by the second coat covering one half of the canoe at a time and the 3rd coat applied in similar manner until the filler is smoothed enough. Then it is necessary to wait for 30’days for the filler to fully cure. After the 30 day curing the hull will be sanded with 220 grit without sanding through the filler and into the canvas. I thought I had covered this process in the video but if I wasn’t clear then hopefully this response will be helpful to you. If you purchase the filler from Northwoods canoe company in Atkinson, Maine they provide a full instruction sheet on how exactly to use their product. I also highly recommend this traditional canvas canoe filler product.

Excellent work. My wooden canoe had a shellac bottom that took minimum abuse very well. I would not want to be the first paddler to hit a rock and spoil your professional finish.

All canoes take a beating at some point. I am currently in a trip and hit a rock and I said “Well that will need some attention”. They all can be fixed is my point. Enjoy the canoe and then fix it if you break it 😃

MT, thanks fo r he bow to stern restoration videos. I can appreciate the attention to detail and I hope the canoe is getting some good use. I'm curious too about the resin and paint used on the canvas? Do you have any pointers in that direction?
@mainetripper

I am happy to hear you enjoyed the video series. This particular canoe was a restoration project for a couple that wanted to bring their canoe back to full beauty. It was in dire need of some TLC. The canvas filler is not a resin but rather a more traditional canoe filler recipe which I purchased from Northwoods Canoe Company in Atkinson,ME. The traditional filler contains a variety of ingredients including silica which provides an extremely hardened shell after a 30 day cure period. Some use resin but most prefer the traditional canoe filler. The current project I am working on “Flewelling Canoe Restoration” will receive a resin coating with a West System filler material. This canoe received Rustoleum Marine Topside Coatings Deep Green paint and marine coatings primer. Interlux, Kirby, and Epifanes paints also are rather popular. Rustoleum is a great product and affordable. However people will typically default to the higher priced paints.

@@mainetripper thank you Sir, that gives me a good place to start and I trust your judgment. I recently purchased from a neighbor and good friend, a 12 ft Thompson which he had purchased used for his father in 1960, for the past 40 years it has been stored in his professional greenhouse which the furnace remained on during cold seasons in Michigan. While the boat is in remarkably good shape, I’m just trying to educate myself for the day when it needs restoring. One more thing. Most people quit their RU-vid restoration series after part 1, few will do a part 2 and the true humanitarian with a deep passion for their hobby will do a part 3. You Sir are the exception. Keep up the good work and thank you.

@@AntiqueWindmills best of luck with your canoe project. You will be quite pleased when the effort is realized, especially when the canoe is back in the water. I appreciate your kind words. My videos are to help those that may consider tackling their own projects. The books are great however sometimes a visual is an added bonus. Thank you for watching and commenting and I wish you the best with your project. Have a great day!

after the 4th coat of paint you talk about applying a wax to protect the paint a little more - what kind of wax do you use?
@mainetripper
@mainetripper 10 месяцев назад
I used turtle wax but any carnauba wax will do.

the only issue i have with your results is that the canoe now needs to be in a maritime museum and not a lake! too nice a job!

Hahaha! Appreciate your interest and taking time to watch the video! I did spend quite a bit of time with this project to make it as perfect as possible for the owner. They have enjoyed the canoe for years and now get to enjoy it for several more. The project was rewarding to say the least.
