We tried out a new method to clean out the Stainless Steel scrubbers in the Final filters of the gasifier.
It gets the NH Hbbyloggr Seal of Approval and a two thumbs up . It took longer to talk about it than it did to clean them and dry them.
No detergents or solvents, No mess to clean up. KISS and cheap win again. Smells like Chicken when it is done, too !

We need new updates on wood gasifiers. Hope you make more videos because we will need them.

I think you are right about needing them, if we don't get toasted from a DEW first. I've been up to my neck in firewood deliveries all year and have had zero time to do anything else. Trying to find the time to try out a DXF-4 Charcoal gasifier I purchased from Thrive Off Grid last Spring. Crazy ! That said, there is a lot more information out there about wood gas than when I started. You should be able to get enough information to guide you along the way. Keep going with it, it does work ! I even got to the point of incorporating Arduino computer controllers to fine tune the Air/Fuel Ratio.

Cool idea with drying the stainless steel scrubbers out on the BBQ. I clean mine by placing them in a 5 gallon bucket then adding a scoop of Oxyclean and some warm water to the mix. I don't ever think I've seen polyester filler that black before. I clean my polyester filler the same way I clean my stainless steel scrubbers and the Oxyclean makes the stuff damn well almost white again. I let the polyester filler dry in the sun. Speaking of sun drying, Are your wood chips small thick chunks of wood? If so you may want to think about trying thin wood shavings. Those work the best. I do not change out my wood chips. I just dump them out on a flat surface and let the sun dry them and they are as good as new.

+flash001USA Flash, Yes, the wood chips are pretty chunky. I'll take your idea and use it. Maybe run down to Tractor Supply and pick up some shavings. Thanks for the tip.

+NH Hbbyloggr When I seen what you were using I wanted to mention to you about using the thin shavings because the thick stuff doesn't work well. Be sure to get the pine shavings. They seem work the best. Before I forget, don't over pack the wood shavings. Just put them in the pipe and let them settle under their own weight. You can pack them lightly but be mindful because if you pack them too much the filters won't breathe correctly.

+flash001USA Funny you mentioned it about over packing. I had SS and fiberfill left over when I put them back in the tubes. It's looser, or rather not packed this time around. I'll get the shavings in before the next run. The fiber fill was the same stuff I had in there last year. I used the same wash bucket to clean the Fiber fill after I did the scrubbers. I guess they got dyed. Maybe before I make the run I'll change it out for new, just to see if it's improved performance.

It's good to see all of the how to's in gasification. I was afraid of how hard the filter housings would be to get apart. I sanded down the inside of fittings with a flapper wheel on a die grinder, and used fernco rubber fittings for a good seal. Anyway , thanks for sharing your findings. Joe

Well done indeed :) . I used to employ this method, and it worked like a charm. With mine, I would put a tiny splash of gasoline on a pile of stainless steel gasifier filters, and light 'er up. It would burn furiously, as the soot is great fuel. Trouble is, my supposedly stainless steel pads rusted up. Maybe I got the wrong ones? To get around this, I dump them in a bucket of warm soapy water. The water turns black, and the SS pads become like new :) . My filter chain lasts for about 100 hours between cleanouts, which is quite surprising, considering that they are only 4 inches in diameter. Oh, for your filter cap problems, the solution may be as simple as reducing their contact area with the pipe end. My filter caps are only 3/4 inches tall on their walls. As a result, they are a bit of a loose fit on the filter pipes. Grease seals them against leaks, and they come off very easily when I loosen the pipe clamps that hold them in place. Perhaps this will be helpful for your system? Like you, I am learning something new every day with these wonderful machines, so the woodgas bug is happy with his choice of bugbite victim :) .

+CNCmachiningisfun Time will tell if it degrades the SS as you found out. At least it's going to get me to the 100 hr mark? That would be thrilling to write that down on the diary.

NH Hbbyloggr You might have bought the good stuff, as I seem to remember mine rusting quite rapidly when I used flames for cleaning it in the early days. The current lot is as good as new, even after some 800 hours of time in service :) . Your diary will soon smile upon you, especially if you can snap a photo of the woodgas bug ;).

+CNCmachiningisfun As I recall, I bought a case of the SS stuff on Amazon.com. The label said made in China. ( no surprise there !) I have a couple of the pads in the house for doing pots and pans and they are basically indestructible in that application.

NH Hbbyloggr Indeedy, these seem to stand the test of time when used in the normal way. Perhaps heating them beyond a certain point burns off some sort of protective plating. I really don't know. Mine have a ferrous content, so they happily stick to magnets. Perhaps that's a pointer to their survival at higher temperatures?

***** Hmmm, I'll try the magnet tomorrow. But for now, they are all sparkly clean and resting comfortably in their little tubes...just waiting ..
