Looking for a wood lathe project? In this video Andrew makes a simple turned mallet. There is a great sense of satisfaction when you make your own tools.
Skew for detail looks good. I do like the design. Laminated pieces seemed to work well particularly if they are scrap shorts. A pleasure to see some one on the tools and not talking so much.
Hi Brian, Thanks for the recommendation. I will check it out. I have done mostly spindle turning for furniture and I want to expand my horizons. You can check out some of my turning in the portfolio section of my site, anamericanartisan.com Thanks for watching and commenting. -Andrew
Love the basic design, however I’m wondering why so many youtubers sand and finish their mallets to such a high grade standard. Don’t get me wrong, for most of my work on the lathe I sand and finish the piece til it glistens, however that beautiful finish is going to quickly mar up when you start using it.
It can be hard to offer observations without coming off as critical. That being said, it looks like you are presenting your tools a bit high (above center) on the work piece (at least while roughing... it’s hard to tell the from other camera angles and your skew work is spot on). I love the mallet - can’t wait to see what else you turn.
@@pinkerbot Really!?!? This is your takeaway from my statement? It's people like you that automatically seek out gender or race or whatever other b.s. that ruin everything. I had an entire reply to this written out, but you know what, I don't owe you anything. Keep your virtual signaling garbage to yourself.
A good person to watch and is a absolute master with a skew is. Woodturner 21. Although I don’t think you need to watch anyone. Nice mallet. What is the screw fitting you used?
Hi Derek, Thanks for the recommendation. I will check it out! The hardware is called a loop cap. Hi Anna, It's a loop cap. Here's a link: www.woodcraft.com/products/woodriver-stainless-steel-decorative-loop-cap-small?via=573621f669702d06760016d9%2C57645b8469702d2f2f0014b8 I put it on there so I can tie a loop of leather and hang it from a hook on my work bench. That way it's close at hand when I need it. I like to use this type of mallet for carving. You can see some of my turning and carving on the portfolio page of my website anamericanartisan.com Thanks for watching and commenting! -Andrew
