Additional air heater for a wood stove.
A good way to heat your workshop.
The heater uses the heat from the exhaust gases from the wood stove.
Heater made of carbon steel (2 and 3 mm sheet metal + carbon steel pipes)
A fan from a coal stove was used for blowing.

I have a question what thickness of plate would be best for a homemade wood burning stove

Hello. we produce grills and oven for restaurants - then we usually use 5, 6, 8 mm thick steel It matters whether you also use fireclay bricks or only steel

How is that going to produce any more heat just sitting on top of the stove a little fan would do the same. Now if t hat fancy heat exchanger was in the firebox with outside air going thru the tubes I could see that being effective.

The total amount of heat is limited to the fuel source, it's about capturing the heat energy that gets produced. A great way to do that is to increase the surface area the hot air touches. That's what's going on here. Instead of just losing that heat through the chimney, it's used to heat the box and pipes. The bigger the heat exchanger, the more heat energy that can be captured and used.

The air inside the tubes gets heated by the exhaust gases otherwise being wasted going up the stove pipe. Not as hot as having the tubes in the firebox but unless you are designing and building a stove from scratch this is an easy add on to an existing stove. I also piped my firebox air feed to bring outside air in instead of wasting the air I've already heated in my shop to feed the fire.
