Part 4 here: • Wood That It Were So S...
Every once in a while a project arrives that upon first glance appears straight forward and simple but as more time is spent understanding the nuances of the work involved, well, things get interesting.
And such is the case with the painting featured in this video series. What appears fairly simple is anything but and requires inventive thinking, novel materials and even new equipment to facilitate a successful conservation.
Follow along in this five part series as the painting moves through the various stages and treatments of conservation and restoration.

Hey folks, since many of you asked; the white dot in the eye was not paint or a glint. It was a chip in the paint layer that was filled in and retouched. It looks odd that the eye has no flint or highlight, and at one point it may have but was lost during another cleaning. I’d love to add one but injecting narrative into the painting isn’t my job and so as much as it cries out for a highlight- I’m not the artist and as such cannot add that. Bummer I know but thems the breaks.

Being an artist myself, I was just hoping for that highlight the whole time. I was just like: please add highlight. It screams for a highlight... Is he mad talking about the importance of the eyes being alive and not adding a highlight?! 😉😀😄 Many thanks for your explanation and the beautiful work overall, - I was thoroughly entertained! 👍 Cheers!

I think he did a great job with this one, except with the eye. In the closeup, there is a tiny speck of white highlight in the eye that he painted right over in his retouching. I think that tiny highlight was one of the most important details in the whole painting, and would really have tied the expression on the face together. The end result of painting it over is that the expression is a bit more flat than if he'd preserved the original highlight. Maybe I'm wrong but that's what it looks like to me. You can see him paint over the spot I'm talking about at 29:43 ish.

I've got to say, your commentary especially during the retouching process was excellent. In the past you have always done an excellent job of explaining the process and your decision-making. But this time I also felt like we were given a view of how you feel while retouching. Telling us about how you focus on something fun first and leave a 'cherry' and the end of your work made me realize how much you love your job and made me feel like I love it too. Thank you again for what I'm sure was a very lengthy restoration which I bet took an equally long time to record and edit. You've provided myself and many others a view into a line of work that we may have not gotten to see otherwise. To be frank, this series is in my opinion on par with some of the things I've seen from the Smithsonian. You are not just showing us your work and the pieces you are working on. You're taking us on a journey.

About the eyes, I know that in some Asian painting styles, you leave the eyes for last - especially on dragons and possibly for other mythical figures? I've seen/heard about this with both traditional Japanese tattoos, and chinese watercolors. Because once you add the eyes, you give the drawing life - and you don't do that when it's not fully formed. Also, consider the Daruma figurines. They are made with their eyes blank, and one paints the first eye when making a wish or a goal. They then paint in the other when it comes true.
@schoolxing

This reminds me that I have a daruma that I bought about ten years ago somewhere. I don't know if I ever decided on a wish and filled in the first eye. Wonder where it went.

A theory on the eye retouching: When I was in mortuary school, we had a class called “Restorative Art”. It covered facial structure, damage repair, color theory, cosmetics, etc. One thing they taught us was that in life, we we focus on the eyes. In death, we focus on the mouth. When preparing a body, I always saved the mouth for last. I think you save the eye for last for the same reason. Once you get that right, your focus is pulled towards it and you can miss other smaller things.
@enjoyingthecrisis5931
@enjoyingthecrisis5931 4 года назад
I still compose entire illustrations and wait until the nearly last step before inking to draw the eyes. Maybe I move something in the composition that I now think will draw the eye or change the tone of the scene, if I were to immediately draw the eyes as I block in the face, I'd be left with someone who's staring at nothing or has the wrong emotion.

I only discovered Julian today and watched a couple of his painting restorations / conservations with interest. Part 1 of this was next up and when I saw the state of the piece I was intrigued to see how he could possibly do anything with it. So now here I am over 2.5 hours later; The chemistry, the science, the engineering, the ingenuity, the suspense, the surprise, the artist, the resolution... hands down the most engrossing and mesmeric thing I have watched in forever. Aside from everything I just said, I'm speechless.

What I find impressive over and over again: The deep passion and love shown in this videos. I don't know if “impressive“ is a good term, but this is what stuck ne on the channel: Someone who not only loves his profession but also the art he is working at. It is a bit like a doting mother to her child: “Oh sweetie, that must hurt. Let me kiss it better and put this fully reversible band aid on it“
@gemmacook1753
@gemmacook1753 4 года назад
He is impressive, he takes on paintings that I think are never going to look good again and yet every time he finds a way, I swear he takes paintings most conservators would not take to challenge himself, i mean this series involved more woodwork and DT knowledge than any painting I've seen him do, he could also have stopped at some point with a lot if his painting restoration but he never does, he always tries to give absolute perfection even if its impossible. K really do admire the fact he is not only an artist but has so much knowledge in other fields. If he ever decided to retire, he would be in high demand to teach new conservators, I do wonder if he will ever expand his business and start to employ and teach people his methods. I'm so curious how long he typically keeps a painting for and how long a start to finish is on paintings.

Rough guess here and i'm likely low balling the time invested, and possibly the rate, but 2 weeks of labor at $100/hr =2*80*100 = $16,000 + materials (that epoxy ain't free). I'm ignoring the cost of the fancy clamp stand thing, assuming that was a capital expense, and wasn't intended to be a direct cost to this project. I'm sure it will find uses on many future projects. I wouldn't be shocked to see an invoice that would look like you were buying a very nice German sedan ($35,000-$80,000). I wouldn't be surprised if the rate were double the above, and the time were double or triple. Looking at his website, it looks like he's a one man show, so that rate includes keeping the lights on, and the place heated, cooled, humidified, and de-humidified probably at near museum levels.

This channel gives we art lovers a whole new appreciation into conserving the masters we often wish we could emulate. Well at least I wish I could. Thank you Mr. Julian for sharing your knowledge and love of conservation. These may not be teaching videos but I know I have learned things I shouldn't do when I paint something for friends. No shellac, use high quality paints and brushes, and to simply enjoy the process of what I try to paint. It may not be perfect but as long as I enjoy it that is all that matters.
