Thanks so much Phil. For sure it was a lot of work but it is the kind I like. I already have a few who want to make it and have shared the information. For sure I was pretty excited at the end. That is normally when I step back to have a good look at what I just made. Easy to get envolved with the process to see it all. But I get lost easy LOL. Thanks for watching! Gary

Gary just fantastic. When I glue my segments together. I spread a length of blue painters tape the length of the circle of segments. I glue all together then simply pull the tape together to form my circle. Only my opinion I find it to be easier to put the clamps or rubber bands around the perimeter. Your ideas are always pretty cool. You keep making them. I'll keep watching them. Thank you for sharing

Thank you Albert. I have seen that method many times and think it is a good idea. Honestly not sure I ever tried it or not. This is how I have always done it. But I learned on how to make segmented rings where the rings were anywhere from 2 to 8 foot in diameter. Guess I should try the tape on the smaller rings I do now. So on my next segmented turning I will give it a try. If I remember LOL Thanks for watching, Gary

Nice piece and good presentation! When I am doing 2 or 3 piece turnings, I mask the insides where the glue joint will be and trim the masking tape with an Exacto knife. That catches any glue squeeze out and I can pull the tape out with a set of those long hemostats from Harbor Freight.

Absolutely beautiful piece Gary. All the details really contribute to making this such a nice piece. I'm really impresses at how you are able to glue up all the segments without the glue setting up -- I have issues just getting 9 Dominos with glue on them before the glue starts setting up.
@ThePapa1947
@ThePapa1947 3 месяца назад
Thanks Mark. The trick is not to push the segments together. If you were to do a rub joint on each one chances are they will setup before you want them to. And do not be stingy with the glue. I get a lot of comments saying I use too much glue. I use just the right amount to let me get things done. At least that is how I feel. Thanks for watching, Gary

I really love your work and the way you video it. Your patience in preparation. I like the humble way you show off. “This is a disc sander I built…” How many ways have you reconfigured your wedgie sleds or how many sleds have you made?
@ThePapa1947
@ThePapa1947 3 месяца назад
Thank you very much Barry. I built the disk sander when I was still an apprentice wood patternmaker. I used it to build a roll top desk and round oak pedestal table. I could have used the sander at work but wanted one at home. It has been used a lot in all those years. I have many different sleds that get changed now and then. The wedgie sled pretty much stays the same. But I added a location to get a perfect 30 degree cut. Nice for feature rings. Thanks for watching and commenting, Gary

Thank you Chris. I like to think we can do anything we put our minds to. The mini lathe will work and so will hand tools if you are careful. But it will be much slower.

Thx Gary, your segmented turnings are my favorite. Really appreciate the how-to info you provide. Really looking forward to doing some of these once my leg lets me stand for extended periods. Question, what do you do with all your creations? My wife only wants to keep a few. Still working to make a consistent design that holds water safely she can use as a live flower vase. Looking forward to more segmented creations.

Gary, very good video! I really like the step by step demonstration. I’ve not used an alignment cone as you’ve done. Excellent hint. I assume that you 3D printed it. How does it attach to the live. The finished vase is beautiful, and that feature ring is awesome!

Its been a while since I saw you making a segmented vessel. Thanks for sharing! Do you dilute the wipe on poly ? By how much and with what?
@ThePapa1947
@ThePapa1947 3 месяца назад
Thank you very much Gary. I have more planned but it is kind of a matter of time to work them in. I use MinWax Wipe On Poly and it is very thin to start so no I use it right out of the can. There are some say to take regular poly and thin it with mineral spirts. I have tried it and do not like it. And it gels up real fast. I will stick with what works good for me. HELLO SIR! I have a question for you. (Sorry this might be a long comment). I am relatively new to turning. This is a tenon vs. mortise question. It seems like a lot of people use a mortise when turning and then have the chance to insert a wooden or metal "pog" or disk into the mortise with their logo on it. I like this idea. Others use a tenon and part it off and hand finish it. This method restricts you to using a method like laser etching or burning a brand into the piece for a logo. Regardless, Is there a best way? I know it depends on wood gran and hardness, but do you have any thoughts? I would prefer to use a mortise but it seems like a tenon has a stronger hold in the chuck. Thoughts?
@ThePapa1947
@ThePapa1947 12 дней назад
Hi Mike, Well there is no best way as they both have and advantage. I have laser engraved a recess while on the lathe before turning it around. They both can be strong enough depending on the size. For a recess on a heavier piece I like to have plenty of stock outside the recess. But most of the time I will use a tenon. Sometimes I hot glue a tenon onto the bottom and then turn it. Not sure that helps much because I will use all those methods. Gary

Question? On your segment cutting sled wouldn't you get the same cut if you just turned the board over?
@ThePapa1947
@ThePapa1947 3 месяца назад
It is possible to turn it over on my sled but I would have to make sure it was the exact angle needed to the blade. With a wedgie sled the wedge takes care of that and if it is not a perfect angle to the blade it does not matter. Also using the same side of the board you only need one side to be perfectly flat. Hope that helps, Gary

Gary When gluing the rings together, which method would you recommend, the lath method or the press method? I’m thinking lathe might be easier to line things up? Asking cause I’m doing my first tornado vase.
@ThePapa1947
@ThePapa1947 3 месяца назад
That is a very good question. For sure the lathe is easier to line the rings up.Takes less time because with a cone or cole jaws they are centered and you do not have to deal with that. Other reasons: With something this small the lathe works great. Where as bigger rings I may use the glue press. With the smaller rings I turn the ring round and flatten it sooner. There is less to turn off to get them round so there is not the stress of a larger ring. But I will use the lathe on larger ones. I may use coles jaws to get them lined which can apply pressue to the joint. If I do not get the cole jaws out then I will use a flat board to put pressure against that ring to get a good joint. But what you are doing I would use the lathe. And if needed you can use a flat board to get equal pressure. Hope this helps, Gary
