The Hardest and Most Difficult Wood Turning Ever

Well I sure did not expect a branch running through the middle of this turning. But it makes sense. The grouth was proabaly something the tree grew to cover a damaged branch.
Sure made for an interesting look.
Thanks to all who voted for turning the burl. I will be doing the Guave soon.

I can imagine how much work that was to turn. It really did not want to be a turned project. Glad the branch did not make the piece fly apart after all the work. Well done.

Man I thought you were going to hollow thinner so that the bark areas would be voids in the final piece. I’m glad you didn’t, I was worried it would explode on you. Nice job adapting to what the wood gave you!

Exactly Valerie. It was also the poor thing that someone hammered 2 large nails in that I cut through when removing this from the burl. But it made 2 nice turnings!

Loved this one Gary. Must have missed the survey, but this one was fantastic..the inside bottom I really looked but you didn’t show it long enough to really make up my mind unfortunately. That's pretty neat. It reminds me of a Hickory burl that my brother sent me. He told me to try and make a kuksa out of it, and I kept it in a box for quite a few years. When I finally got a lathe, I decided that maybe it was time to see what was inside that burl. Mine started off with dimensions more like yours finished at, so the bowl is proportionally smaller finished. But man did it have some beautiful grain in there. And it ended up with 2 sections of brown potato skin as part of it. Good stuff. 👍 come to think of it, the bottom is actually also made of a branch, too.
@ThePapa1947
@ThePapa1947 12 дней назад
Thank you William. I think it is common that there will be a branch inside these grouths. A tree will try and heal itself if a branch breaks. So they seemed to get these on potatoes growing on them LOL. Yours sounds very interesting as well. Thanks for watching, Gary

@ThePapa1947 Sometimes, I get a little jealous of my brother, he lives in northern New York state, so he gets Osage Orange, and all sorts of interesting wood that I never see in Minnesota and Wisconsin. But I find a lot of good stuff around here, too. My mother has a Bitternut Hickory in her backyard that just dropped a big branch and I'm going to go clean it up and see if there are any good parts to turn. Stay cool out there in the wild west!

Hi Gary You have thought me all I know about segmented turning Thank You.I want to turn a big bowl from Maple and Wallnut boards.Do I have to cut 2 sets of each row and woods on my wedgie sled to get a brick and mortar pattern to get the table saw fault to line up the angles Thanks Peter
@ThePapa1947
@ThePapa1947 9 дней назад
Thank you Peter. If you want the same size segments in the rows then cut half out of Maple and half out of Walnut. So if you have 18 segments per row make 9 from each type of wood. If you choose 12 per row then 6 of each and so on. Hope that helps, Gary

@ThePapa1947
@ThePapa1947 11 дней назад
Thank you Colin! The scrapper is 38 degrees on each side. They say anything less than 90 is good but I find around 40 to be real good. Last time I changed it to 76 and like it a lot. Thanks for watching, Gary

Nice job Very cool Piece Gary!😎 Definitely looked like some hard stuff to cut, I could feel it just watching ya, got some nice character, pretty cool potato skin features, I looked for some faces but couldn’t see any but there is probably some definitely hiding in there, sometimes some takes longer to look at before ya see it, I got a piece of pecan, I don’t know if it’s burl or just some crazy looking something but anyway I had it kikin around in the house for probably a year, looked at it one day at a certain angle and it looks just like a camel 🐪 head,
